No STM.. Again...

Hmm..
Torrents have been running all day, with no hint of a slowdown.

16.3GB downloaded
2.5GB uploaded

Same thing happened the other day, what gives?

I'm in Nottingham, 20Mb..

People complain when there is STM, and then complain when there isnt?

Damn.

Not a complaint mate, just curious to know if its just another glitch / policy change, or if anyone else has been experiencing the same thing recently..

Running all day for 16.3Gb? that would download in less than 3 hours on 20Mb

Sadly the Internet doesn't guarantee to max out 20Mbit all the time, and it's still 7GB more than is needed to trip STM both during daytime and evening.

mines been same for about 2 weeks.

I have a secret too, since the beginning of April the STM on my 20mb has not been working.

Ever since i moved to a DOCSIS 1.1 config. last bank holiday weekend i pulled over 80GB without being STM'd

You wanna know a secret I don't pay for it either lol, before you look down at me as a cloner I ain't I am staff on trials

Re: No STM.. Again...

well that just proves that VM can operate and give you your near full payed for service without the need for STM OC....

BBK "I am staff on trials ", so what about the generic long standing "Multicast" protocol being filtered off the VM CPE kit Question i keep asking but get no answer.

is it or is it Not available to 50.Bit/s oh i mean Mbit ;) DS3 users

simple, can you start a
vlc dvdsimple:// --sout '#rtp{dst=239.255.1.1,mux=ts,sdp=sap,name="My DVD"}'

or
vlc -vvv --color v4l2:///dev/video:norm=secam:size=640x480 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,acodec=mpga,vb=1000}:rtp{m ux=ts,dst=239.255.12.13,port=5004}' --ttl 12

and have someone on the same DS3 UBR,section, headend, english.irish, scots, welsh VM DS3 customers start VLC up turn SAP announce on from the menu and start to see and click these Multicast stream announcements.... if not the whole Multicast Janet network (that runs a good part of it Multicast/infrastructure over all the VM core network cable)and other MC enabled ISPs....

while we are at it, what about IPv6 the other core DS3 mandatory requirement for end to end world DS3 "bronze" and above inclusion, is that also activated and available to at least DS3 VM subscribers, go ask "Orange" the VM DS3 trial guy or whoever to make a current statement please....

Re: No STM.. Again...

God no Popper, have you seen all the reports of peering issues? VM are having enough trouble with IPv4 and MPLS without adding PIM into the mix.

popper 27-04-2009 15:03

Re: No STM.. Again...

LOL, no i havent, but as i said the Multicast Janet network runs a good part of it's Multicast/infrastructure over all the VM core network and has done for a long time now, so i assumed that someone in core networking knows a thing or too about that, to keep it flowing, or did before they got booted perhaps?

all the worlds ISP grade routers and related kit can all do it OC, as IP Multicast is as enbeded as the Unicast protocol, they were made to compliment each other at the time, as was IP broadcast but i wont go there ;).

the "Mbone" was good ;) , no real innovation today springing from that work, and thats a shame.

if anyones intersted PIM

They don't even listen to customers suggesting ways to make the service better and save them a bit of cash either...

I suggested they route all OVH data center traffic through LINX rather than DTAG for better latency and reducing costs. Did they listen? Nope...

Heya, Janet just lease wavelengths and/or entire fibre on the VM optical network. The VM IP core isn't involved with Janet apart from some provision of (not multicast enabled) leased tail circuits.

There will be good reasons why things are being routed that way. The LINX connection may be short of capacity, they may be short of the committed rate on the DTAG transit.

And depending on who he actually spoke to at VM, they may not have even had a clue which connection is being used for peering, and no influence over it.

Re: No STM.. Again...

I asked tech support to pass it onto the network team on the newsgroups when people were having issues accessing any server inside the OVH DC. I actually asked twice, and so did a friend, both times I was told it was passed along, and my friend was also. If 3 times isn't enough I don't know what is.

In that instance you'd hope they escalate the issue if they don't know how to resolve it.

There's a fault ticket raised with networks isn't there?

Re: No STM.. Again...

There was. I believe its probably closed as the VM/OVH issue was supposed to be resolved now.

.

AFAIK, SuperJANET is run over dedicated links, and is all its own network (logically anyway). The logical network is all operated by JANET. I remember reading it in one of the newsletters anyway.

I wouldn't mind betting Virgin inherited a ton of dark fibre, and JANET are just leasing it. I remember them saying who it was leased from, but I don't recall who. :(

Re: No STM.. Again...

I used to have an OVH server and had problems about 8 months ago, but it seemed to sort itself out after about 2 to 3 weeks. I am thinking of getting a new OVH server, especially now that bandwidth from OVH to the Internet is 200mbit not 100mbit on their dedicated servers, although I think the Kimsurfi ones are still 100mbit to internet.

AbyssUnderground 27-04-2009 19:41

Re: No STM.. Again...

Only servers with a 1Gbps port get 200Mbps to the internet but this is excluding all Kimsufi's. Only ovh.co.uk servers with 1Gbps ports get it.

JANet take fibre from all over the shop. Ex-ntl, Ex-Telewest, Cable and Wireless, Colt, Easynet, BT, whoever can get the job done at the right price!
