Will a 30 MPH gatso speed camera flash, if you pass it doing 31 MPH?

It's unlikely as speedo error has to be accounted for. It tends to be a tolerance of 2mph plus 10%.

Don't take my word for it, I don't make the rules...

Usually a speed camera will only clock you if you're doing 35mph but that shouldn't used as a guide.

If it's one of the new average speed recorders then you're far more likely to get caught doing 31mph.

I remember reading that car speedo's aren't 100% accurate and that you're probably doing less than you think you are - so no need to worry if you 'think' you were doing 31mph ;)

No, it was one of those yellow speed camera. Car was doing 31 MPH.

You need to be travelling at around 37MPH to get flashed.

35MPH to be safe :)

As Russ said the police usually do 2-3Mph + 10%, so you'd have to be doing 35+ for a copper to take action...

BUT!!!

The police can do you for anything over the posted speed imit
and
Most gatso's are set to 10Mph+ over the speed limit at least

You sure it wasn't flashing an oncoming car or an overtaking car?

Anyway if a NIP isn't recieved within 14 days you're OK...If you do get one though at 31Mph you are over the speed limit ;)

I dont know whether the camera flashed or not, the sun was in my eyes. :)

But I know for sure, car was doing 30-31mph.

No cars were overtaking me...

It is 'said' that a lot of cameras don't have film in them but will still flash you anyway - think about it, the next time you pass that camera you'll be under the limit I'm sure....

This is one of those areas where everyone has heard this and that about how they work - the best person to ask would be a policeman (he's around here somewhere I think).

No but he might be able to confirm whether the cameras can flash you doing less than 35mph and if indeed they always have film in.

If your cars speedo is as accurate as it was from manufacture spech, then you won't get a ticket.

Assuming you haven't changed the size of the wheels and tyres :)

That reminds me, how do I use the Tesco Tyre pump (don't laugh)?

What should the reading be on the pump, to inflate the tyres to the right size.

Isn't there a pressure chart by the pump?
They're usually digital ones and about 32 PSI. depends on the car and tyres.

They give you 10% to allow for discrepancies with your speedo, you can be doing 35MPH and not get flashed.

And you still get those that slam on the anchors and go through them at a true speed of around 25MPH. and thinking that the maniac just gone past them a lot faster should have got flashed :)

Car speedometers can have a tolerance of 10%, however they cannot show that you are doing a lower speed than you really are doing. So they will generally err on the side of caution and the speedometer will show a higher speed. If you have a GPS SatNav in the car you'll see that the speed according to the device is always slower than the indicator in the car dashboard.

I doubt it. I suspect that at the very least, he would be in violation of the Data Protection Act if he did so. Not to mention all sorts of other rules and laws.
