Vista Install freezes at the end
Ok you may have seen a post from Darthlinux's before about the install of Vista freezing at expanding files well I had the same issue but sorted with a new dvd drive however I can't seem to install Vista as when it reboots for last time in the install it freezes and I have no idea why.
My PC is Vista ready and has been checked so no issues there I am using a AMD CPU not sure on the Mobo, I have 3Gb ram, can anyone help me hopefully the blue shark will help. I look forward to your replies |
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Vista has issues installing with anything over 2GB of RAM.
I suggest you remove a stick and install with 2GB. You can install the RAM again once you have the OS up and running. Infact, install SP1 before you do that. |
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
I installed Vista x64 fine on 4GB of RAM.

Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Also worthy of note, I have had trouble in the past installing Vista pre sp1 when using an SATA DVD drive. It would install so far then fall over. Had to dig out old faithful.

Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
I hve tryed a 32bit vrsion and 64bit version and I get the same issue
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
could be a hard drive fault, try a spare one see what happens
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Ive installed XP 32bit, Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit on 4GB RAM before without problems... I didn't have to remove any.
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Update I tryed Windows 7 beta and that worked now I am confused.

Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
7077? you should have waited till May as thats when RC1 7100 is expected and they have disabled upgrade. There is a workaround but its not advised
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
7077 yeah that version works as a clean install haven't tried a upgrade don't like to install that way
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Could be a BIOS problem with it not liking the > 2GB RAM (kind of explains why it works on some setups but not others...)
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Shall I try reinstalling with on 1 stick of ram then?
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Well... I would think so and you can add the other stick once the install completes.
---------- Post added at 15:16 ---------- Previous post was at 15:15 ---------- once you've got vista up and running check for bios firmware updates for your motherboard which might cure the issue for future. |
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
How can I do that I never upgraded the firmware of my Bios
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
I had exactly the same problem mate, my solution was to just leave it, I tried a couple of times and gave up after about 10 minutes but if you leave it alone it will complete. That was with 2gig of ram and the rest of my pc is about 2-3 years old, all sata drives. Go make a cup of tea or take a shower and it should all be done.
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
How long did you leave it for mate?
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
I just went off and left it, probably about 20 mins or so, I did phone my mate cos I was a bit worried too, he's a network admin at a school and does lots of installations for all sorts of people, it happened to him too but he knew about it so I just left it then came back and voila it was all installed.
Like I said though I must have installed it 3 times because after waiting for what seemed like an eternity I was convinced something had messed up. |
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Update - I have got it working now, but Crowman I left it for a hour and nothing happened, I changed two things in my set up I unpluged my USB devices, this includes my USB keyboard and just left 1 stick of ram in my machine, so I am still not sure what was causing the problems anyone got any ideas, atleast I got it working now finally.
|
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Well you got it working and that was the main thing, when nothing seems to be happening though, no drive lights, dvd spinning you do tend to think that its borked. After leaving mine though it did finally install. Just a pain that you ended up unplugging all your bits for it to finally get on.

Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Broadbandking,
Well done on the fix. The chances are it was the USB devices that caused the problem. You did the right thing though starting to disable/remove stuff to troubleshoot. I had a similar problem recently after building myself a new box (Athlon X2, 4GB RAM, Asus board, Nvidia PCIe video card and Vista 64) Vista 64 or Vista 32bit would not install, it started to drive me nuts. To troubleshoot I tried Windows 7, XP, W2K3 and a couple of Linux distros to eliminate a hardware problem with the motherboard, CPU and RAM they all installed with no issues. I then started disabling some of the onboard devices in BIOS. It finished up being the on board audio that was causing the problem. Vista installed when it was disabled, once the OS was on I re-enabled it an all was well. |
Re: Vista Install freezes at the end
Works out it was the USB devices that was causing the issues as I put the memory back in my PC total 3Gb and Vista install worked.
Thank you everyone for your help. |
