Mouse problems

I picked up one of these for a few quid but I've been having problems with it.

If I plug it in via USB then generally it works but often the cursor stutters, as if the machine is slowing down and USB isn't getting much power.

That's not the main issue though, it comes with the green ps2 plug adaptor to connect it to the mouse socket but when I do, the computer doesn't know it's there - the cursor never responds.

The laser underneath the mouse lights up so there's power getting to it - so it's not the green adapter as if I use it to plug a different optical mouse in, that works fine.

The drivers are found straight away when I plug it in via usb so would might this be? I really would prefer to use the proper mouse socket, not the usb.

When swapping from usb to ps2 or vise versa a restart is needed IIRC

Just did a reboot - still the same :(

Re: Mouse problems

the ps2 socket is rapidly becoming obsolete - if it works on USB then I'd use that, personally - at least you only have one thing to troubleshoot, but like bop says the ps2 socket isn't 'hot pluggable' and will require a reboot each time to initialise ...

<edit> sorry just saw your post ^^^ - I've had mice that don't like the usb to ps2 adapters, before, it looks like it is usb or a new mouse, unfortunately ..

There's sometimes, although rarely these days, a setting in the BIOS to enable/disable PS2 mouse detection and free up the IRQ for other things. I've not seen it on a system for years to be honest, but it might be worth checking.

Hi Russ them things are rubbish the office keep sending them very ones out for me to use in the field and no they certainly dont work with the ps2 adapter at all as for the stutter I found that it was the type of mouse mat you use some turn optical mice into a hyperactive kid (dont know wot the hell they are doing lol) e.g the dell mats are the worst.

Re: Mouse problems

Stuttering curser could be a result of a mouse mat that is reflecting to much (I had this when I was using a glossy mag, that had too much white)

Russ 27-03-2009 16:40

Re: Mouse problems

I don't use a mousemat, I think it's because my system is a bit slow, running Vista and I've got a wireless usb stick plugged in next to it. All 3 togther are probably the reason..

Russ can you tell me which USB chipset you have on your pc.... if you go to Device Manager then USB controllers it'll tell you there.... as I've seen cases like this before with certain chipsets mainly SIS or VIA

I've got 2 of those in my drawer. They don't work with either of my 2 PC's at home, Windows just says that the device has malfunctioned.

They did work on the PC's at work though when I took them in.
