Coming soon promises

Sirius suggested this in another thread (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/10...ls-page-5.html). That maybe there should be a thread about Promises, so I thought I’d start one.

.

This goes back many years now when it was Cable & Wireless.
I brought a set of four cordless phones for home branded Cable & Wireless, among the features it had was caller display. So I found the CS at the time and asked about caller display and was told it would be an extra £1.00 a month if I remember right. The only problem it was not available in the Peterborough area, but it should be in six months time.
Well I’ve still got the phones but caller display, well I’m still waiting.........

Anyone else got any promises?

Caller id is something i too have been waiting for and its at least 5 years now.

I remember the days of dial up internet and the horrendously long wait for any type of free dial up. Then when you least expected it 5 disks all arrived on the same day only days after i installed broadband :)

HD is the latest of a long line of Coming soon that ends up as coming later and then never See's the light of day

I live in Bretton and I must admit it must be about a year when I last asked about it.
I'll have to give CS a call.

I've been waiting for Caller ID for so many years that I have lost count of how long it's been now. I've also lost count of the amount of times CS have told me "oh it will be available in about 6mths time"! I've come to the conclusion that it's never going to be available in my area so if I want it I will have to go over to BT. I know their excuse is that it costs money to do all the changes to enable Caller ID in ex C&W areas, but surely if they start to lose customers over it then it's worth the investment

I can't believe you're all still waiting to be able to get caller display, I've had it ever sinceI switched to cable from BT 13 years ago. I had it on BT for quite a while before that (you had a seperate display unit back then), and when I switched to cable when it arrived in our area it was one of the features I asked if they did too. At the time it was Comcast Teesside (who built our network), then became ntl, and now VirginMedia.

Every mobile phone can do it, why is it so hard for some landline phone areas?

To be honest, unless you are happy with what virgin are offering now, then don't sign up with them based on 'coming soon promises'

Absolutely right, but how many new customers are aware of this? Lets hope they read these sorts of forums before they endure 3/6 months of anticipation before finding the same promises churned out more times than episodes of Frazier on Paramount/Comedy Central.

Re: Coming soon promises

Just to clarify the caller ID issues that some of you are having...

In ex- Cable and Wireless areas, there are a number of switch sites that are not compatible with caller ID due to issues with street cabinets not having the correct equiment to support the caller ID feature.

The biggest problem now is that this type of equipmet is long out of date and not being installed by Virgin. The other issue is Virgins long anticipated plans to switch to an IP telephony system (last mentioned back in 2006 before the rebrand) which would allow Virgin to provision the same call features (amongst other services) to all franchise areas.

Telewest has teamed up with Ericsson in a bid to enter the fast-growing internet telephony market.

The cable TV provider, now the UK's largest cable operator and a thriving broadband provider, has signed a five-year deal with Ericsson to migrate its existing voice network to one based on VoIP.

The initial phase of the deal focuses on residential customers, who will be offered a voice-over-broadband service using Ericsson's Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem technology.

Telewest's phone network will migrate to VoIP using Ericsson's Telephony Softswitch.

Ericsson claimed that the ultimate aim is to provide a cheaper alternative to traditional landline calls, and to save Telewest's running costs.

"Telewest is already seeing the benefits from its investment in its network, " said Jacqueline Hey, UK managing director at Ericsson. "Our technology will provide gains [for Telewest] in network running costs and efficiency."

There is no ETA for this type of upgrade unfortunately but rest assured it will be big news on cableforum when it does happen.

Hope this helps guys.

I think we seem to be missing the point of this thread.
It’s not so much why we can’t get this or that, but being promised something in order to keep customers or get new ones.

With all due respect chrispy, if people just tell you what was promised to them as coming soon without the whys and where fores, its going to be a pretty short and boring thread.

Funny how we always hear of isolated people who have Caller Display on VM but it's not widespread...

It used to be a promise people were given when they threatened to leave due to the lack of it . I recall my sister being promised in around 9 years ago...

I'm in Paston.

It is not available yet... So never. VM seems too underinvest in their telephone network, odd because a feature rich service could be a really great selling point!

No need to be surprised. VM has always under invested in just about all aspects of it's business. It is why they are always in a mess, eternally lurching from crises to fiasco. :D

I must admit I do wonder what they are going to do once all the family silver has been sold off...
