50MB Install Monday What To Expect?
 

Got my 50MB Service being installed on Monday. I have already got the router and plugged it in. I have not long ago brought a Netgear Router. I paid £104 for it in Currys. Its the WPN824 RangeMax Wireless Cable Router. The Coverage on my one is 10x but the Coverage on the Virgin Media Netgear Router is 5x. I got Virgin Media coming Monday so i dunno what to expect when the work has been complete. And does he run a different cable to the modem compared to the one i got now?

I know people are complaining of slow speeds but if that happens then ill try the modem without their router and with it to compare it. Virgin Media def need to admit to their throttling though.

You have to have a new modem, I can't say I have ever got slow speeds, deends n area really, what throttling do you mean?
Virgin at the moment are not throttling the 50Mb there are rumours but no one can confirm or prove this.

its just peoples posts i have been reading around these forums about their slow speeds or them throttling because they are downloading too much.

The fact VM will apply STM to 50Mb not long after its fully rolled out

Whilst that been true the throttled speed rumours don't look good if true but I don't really care as I only have the 50Mb until end of May

the engineer will bring the modem round with him and just use it to replace your old one, he wont replace any cables or anything. They are brainwashed into telling you that you can only use the Netgear router they have provided but just ignore them.

Be warned, once they get the modem up and running they will run a speed test from an official VM test server. When they did it for me and another people in my area we only got 26mbit. If that happens to you run the test from speedtest.net and you'll get your true speed.

I know other peops have been experiencing probs with 50mbit over the last couple of weeks but mine has been super sweet.

www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk also gives the same results so either my 50mb has a fault or speedtest sites are way off

Monday 12:26 21301 kbps (2.66MB/s) 1390 kbps (174kB/s)
Tuesday 14:33 22847 kbps (2.86MB/s) 1569 kbps (196kB/s)
Wednesday 09:37 18164 kbps (2.27MB/s) 1589 kbps (199kB/s)

i lost the will to live on thursday and sick of tests now :(

I think you may have a problem. Although Virgin don't recommend some of these speed test sites I think they give a fair indication of problems.

And with reference to to OP. What to expect?

Well most of the time blistering speeds but sudden unexplained speed drops that can last a few minutes or a few hours.

OK we may get STM at some point - but for now I'm basking in the sun ;)

either i have 3 broken pc's that suddenly fix themselves or virgins network opperates better at different times of the day but on the whole more bad than good

prior to the huge issues before december ive had good service and because i use bandwidth at peak times with multiple pc's and consoles i follow the traffic management or pay for a better tier

it just recently become crap to the point its not worth having :(

STM - Well not at the moment and no annoucement about when or limits, so that incorrect.
Crap Service - With a new product there will always be issues and what crap service are you referring, I have top notch speeds, you may have bad service but there are millions of other customer who aren't, don't paint everyone with the same brush as you.

You forgot to mention possible cloning of his config from launch, stm throttling as well as application throttle coming soon (quoted by mr berkett himself), im sure theres some other nasties coming soon the past 2 years under the rebrand have proved this - next announcment should be april-may this year if my vm math is correct.

As there has been no annoucement of limits or anything so why would I have mention something I know nothing nor do you or anyone on this forum so don't stir things because your bitter about vm services

Who is stirring things up not me this very forum seen a cable hacker come here and gloat about services taken as well as it being well publicised all over the internet, cue the guy comes to post here, stm is already here and is getting worse every few months - shortly coming to 50mb after the whole country has it according to well placed vm sources and neil berkett was quoted at christmas as saying application throttling is coming in the second quarter of this year.

So far from stirring anything im just informing the guy of what to expect from a neutrals pov and not from an employee.

I'm a 'neutral' too, but genuinely so in that I couldn't give two hoots either way as opposed to other 'neutrals' who seem to have an axe to grind with regards to VM at every turn.

I note though that you failed to point out that the number of people detrimentaly affected by the issues you've described is actually quite a small percentage of the overall number of VM customers.

I maybe a employee but still have my personal views, the OP can see all the threads regarding STM and app throttling, I merely was saying whats the point in posting this, it is all over the forum, the OP wanted to know what expect when its installed not what is expected in the coming months of 50Mb.

As it comes with a 12-18 month contract he might want to know what will be happening in the coming contract period and not have looked in the other threads.

subject to change of contract blah blah but they do have to notify you when any big changes are made to your contract and should you not agree to the new changes then you can walk away with no penalty charges :) contracts work both ways

we all know its coming but when is the question and will it be fair because 75% on 20mb is a big loss in my opinion
i also wouldnt mind having 50mb working though before its capped :(

Not at all, however it will help with network load so you will see overloading on the UBR's not be as bad as it has been until VM overload them again and again.

You will then be among the few in the UK who receive a half-decent downstream, even if, like a selfish woman, you will be receiving only as the upstream sucks.

yeah now with 3 lap tops and a pc and a ps3 and a xbox in the house a 2mbit connection just wont cut it... faster the better espesially when all lap tops are being used watching youtube videos buying movies from itunes download firmware and demo games from the ps3, itunes is good always get full dl speed and can pay for the good movies and tv episodes without leaving the house. the quicker they dl the better
