Street cabinet

Not sure if this is the right section to put this in , my opollagies if not .

I have contacted customer services by phone and sent them an e-mail regarding the state of the street cabinet by my house .
The problem with it is that it has been pushed backwards so much that the back is nearly touching the floor , I was hopeing they could get to it and put it right before it falls completley over and before every one looses there services , Its been 3 weeks now since i first phoned and its still like it , i was asked in the e mail for my phone number , i guess so someone would let me know whats happening about it but i havent herd a thing, Do i wait a few more weeks before contacting them about it again , i know i wont be to happy if i loose all my services if it falls after iv told them about it.

Re: Street cabinet

You will probably have to wait for it to fall over and break some ones leg before any action is taken and then VM will blame you for leaning on it.

Re: Street cabinet

there is one near me, they wrapped it in duct-tape..

Delta Whiskey 21-03-2009 08:33

Re: Street cabinet

Most of the boxes around here are held together by duct tape, a sad state of affairs. The last time I complained about the one that services my block, it took them a week to take a look at it and then all they did was put more duct tape around it to keep it closed.

Re: Street cabinet

As long as it's DUCTSIS 3 tape everything will be fine!!

As the box contains live voltage (for amps etc) and is (proberlly) on council propety (well there usually on council owned land) contact your local council's Health And Safety board informing them about the potential hazzard on there land reminding them then even though it is owned by VM THEY could still bee liable for any injury should the box fall over. They would have the power to FORCE VM to put it right within 24 hours (assuming your local authority is on the ball) :)

Re: Street cabinet

I know of 2 that are wide open.

If someone were to rip the cables out for 'fun', it'd be a monumental pain in the bum to fix for VM.

no such thing as national rate now, but thats another thread altogether.

And with so many of us experiencing how little VM actually care, Id just love to see one or two of these boxes going up, and VM having to pay top buck to get it sorted...

End of the day, VM probably think they have no responsibility for these cabinets, and to be honest, if someone did pull the wires or even pour a bottle of water inside, then frankly its VMs fault.

I live on a nice tidy road, yet the box its the ugliest thing, there it sits, disgusting, rusty and held together with effin duct-tape..

Some mother of broadband if it cant even take care of her kids.

Well its been another week past and still not been seen to so i have just sent an e mail to virgin medias complaints department about this and have informed them that children are playing by it and if that comes falling down on them they could get hurt . Hope they will listen as they have been warned about this 3 times now.

Mine is in a terrible state. One door is missing completely and the other has been ripped off and leaning on the cabinet. I have a hell of a job trying to get them to do anything about it. I will try ringing that number on monday though.

Browney i reported my local one after noticing it open on christmas day a on dec 28th on the newsgroups. Had a reply saying it will be fixed within 28 days. The thing still hasnt been done all thats holding it closed is a coil of wire around the handle.

DRZ400 29-03-2009 12:43

Re: Street cabinet

Go and pull some wires out .... It'll be fixed today!

m419 29-03-2009 15:35

Re: Street cabinet

Be aware that they arent all operated or owned by Virgin Media or Cable companies.

Most utility companies have them, in fact most green cabnets are BT's! and the BT cabinets round here are terrible, they are about 50 years old,the paint is falling off the,the doors are falling off and some of them are disused and not in any use at all.

Also,in my block of maisonettes there is BT's cables along the corridors and its in a terrible state of disrepair, there are also junction boxes too hanging off with most of the wires pulled out. I complained to BT, BT said that they wouldn't send anyone out to fix it because there are no active BT customers using those lines, Everyone is on Virgin Media round here. so I suppose if they don't want to fix it and if they have no active customers, might as well remove it all.

Contact your local authority and ask for a H&S surveyor to pay a visit, they will find out who owns the box.

Re: Street cabinet

I got a phone call telling me it will be fixed in 3 to 5 days , and a contact number was left me if not done in that time , I came home from work on friday to see an engineer working on the box ( well so i thought ) i looked out later to see the box erect . great i thought . But would you beleive it he just stood it up and did not secure it so it is now fully over on its back all the wires are showing from the underside of the box, Worse than before , luckerly i still have my services working. Back on the phone to them tomorrow.

Just reported an open cab around the corner from me. Large doors completely obstruct the pavement. Also contains a mains transformer which looks to be controlled by a standard household double-poll switch. Hope VM fix it before the kids start messing with it.

Spurring off the power supply onto the casings would work too.

Re: Street cabinet

Thanks for the 0121 6281234 number, had already spent 40p on mobile trying to get through on 0870, annoying when it's not my problem!

Didn't need cabinet ref, just postcode & junction of two streets where located. "We'll dispatch an engineer withing 24hrs" they said. We'll see...

I saw the doors wide open a few weeks ago, and fixed it with duct tape (the lock had been previously drilled out). Yesterday I saw the tape had been very clearly cut, the doors wide open again, but with no visible damage, implying whatever contractor is connecting people, isn't bothered about also shutting it again.

Amoger 14-09-2010 13:56

Re: Street cabinet

Calling again today, doors flapping wide open over the pavement in the wind. Thought "24hrs" could be optimistic...

(Edit: "48hrs" this time; didn't like to mention I'd already taped it up twice myself, filled in the web form, & phoned yesterday morning too. And it's definitely a Virgin Media one - there's a card inside it with their number & a code.)

lol barby.

I've worked in tower blocks where the cab is on the roof, doors hanging off - open to elements and there was a godam pigeon nested amongst the bundle of wires, was jokes! At the time though it wasn't as it almost made me fall off the roof as I wasn't expecting it, proper scared the crap outta me!

My company(I am a subby) asks me to fill in forms for cabs that are in disarray. I've been back to cabs that I reported months back that have still not been sorted out.

So I give up reporting them now. I've even sent email/photos of cabs to an area manager who works direct with Virgin....nadda.

Give them a chance, call Virgin once or twice over the matter. If nothings done in a week orso, inform them that you are going to involve the council's Health n Safety if nothings done in 3 days.

They should at least make the cab hotline a freephone number, might be a start...

Re: Street cabinet

How do I find out the cabinet serving my house? I used to know the old one for my old property but have never found out for my current house.
The old one that used to serve us was in a state. One day when NTL came out to fix a problem I had, the teenager that came round to fix asked me if he could borrow a spade. I was like...."err ok". I then followed him whilst chatting to him about why etc, and he basically said to me that he is always getting stitched up on jobs not having the keys to cabinets so he is asked to use means necessary to open them forcefully and then try to put them back as best he can. Thsi is not a joke, he was definitely an NTL guy, NTL van, uniform and he did to be fair fix the problem. He literally crowbarred open the Cabinet with my spade. He had to tell neighbours who he was as they thought he was vandalising it! lol. I was genuinely embarrased to be standing there but he sorted it and that was that. I obviously reported the cab disrepair the next day and it did eventually get sorted.

It's because of staff like you that the cab's end up in the condition they are in, most of the cabs in my area have had their doors stolen or taken by kids because they have been forced open and left unsecured over and over by so called engineers who don't have the correct equipment.

I have never seen a BT cab for example open or missing it's doors.

Virgin media are also responsible for failing to provide their staff with the tools required to do the job.

I do not damage the cabs in anyway that will stop me from securing them, its easy to pop open the doors and easy to close them again. IF im unable to secure it, I will cover it in tape to stop it from swinging in the wind and report the cab via the correct channels. I'll also refuse to do jobs because of no cab keys.
