I'm meant to be getting a router off VM any day now, anyone know what make and version it is, also any hacked firmware other then the VM branded stuff.

It is a Netgear one and I won't use it out of principal, I bought myself a new Linksys one instead.

Don't think it will be an N router as I'm only on 20meg any idea the model number of the netgear?

well ifs its the G it will be WGR614V9 if its the N will be WNR2000

Thank you, any idea if I can flash it with normal firmware to get rid of the VM stuff?

No as it is embedded and even Netgear will not provide support for it, if you attempt to flash it you are liable to brick it.

Ok, cheers, do you know if it supports WPA2 as on their site it only lists WPA.

If you login using 192.168.1.1 it gives you the normal Netgear set up screens so should be ok.

Below is quick set up without using the Virgin disk.

Quick router set up for the V9

connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page.

disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon ( not the virgin icon ) click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected.

the WGR614V9 has VM own firmware

the WNR2000 has netgear standard firmware that can be upgraded from their site.

Yeah, but you quoted the question "Does this router support WPA2" and answered with a quick installation guide :D

The G router does support WPA2 as I'm connected to it via that at this moment. :)

Surly they can't still be supplying G routers?

Mine came the other day for my 50mb, i've took the USB thing out of it and plugged this into a PC that i don't use that often and the router is still in the box as i have no use for it.

They now supply both G and N routers and it is up to the customer which one they get as the is a fee for the N router even when the G is free.

Didn't realise there was a fee for the N. Luckily mine was free, good job as i don't actually need it.

well its not actually free, its included in the setup fee for 50mb

Luckily i didn't have to pay that either then. I was on a Pilot Scheme late last year, so got it all for free and just over three months use for free too.

I agreed to keep the 50mb service so they sent me my router as we didn't originally get these for the trial, just the modem.

Well mine just arrived, it is the G router, it came already set up for WPA, pity they didnt give me the password, I had to run the supplied CD before I could log in and change what I wanted to.

As for the firmware looking at the router pages there's nothing on there to say its a VM router, is that normal or are they shipping them with netgears own firmware now?

Look on the sticker underneath if it says SSID is virgin and Passphrase is password then it has Virgin firmware

Ahhh yeah, found it now, it does so must be VM firmware, pity.
