Fuel duty is set to rise by roughly 2 pence per litre

Quote:

In just 2 weeks fuel duty will rise again, bringing the total tax paid at the pumps to 71 pence in every pound - despite Prime Minister Gordon Brown promising not to raise fuel duty.

Watch Brown pledge to freeze fuel duty. (1.40m - 2.02m)

Fuel duty is set to rise by roughly 2 pence per litre on April 1st meaning that 66 pence of the average litre of fuel goes directly to the Treasury.

I've edited your original post to include the link to the article where Gordon makes his pledge, and to include quote tags so it's obvious that you're quoting from another source :tu:

This has all rather crept up out of nowhere, I'm not entirely sure how the PM has managed to sneak this increase in - I can't recall seeing it publicised anywhere, did I miss it first time around?

Someone has to pay for the Bank bailouts. Guess it has to be Joe Motorist again.

Sadly the magnitude of this government's economic ineptitude and negligence has guaranteed that we're all going to be paying for the financial bubble for generations - 2p on a litre of fuel is nothing compared to what's ahead for all taxpayers.

well the country's on its knees - motor industry crippled -unemployment soaring, banks still aren't working-- maybe we weren't supposed to notice this tax hike amongst all our other woes .

I agree i work for a bank, the banks are laughing at the government/bank of England.

Only a small number are passing on rate cuts the rest are sitting back and earning a serious amount of cash of us all.

anyway back to the fuel increase, with the motor industry failing too is this going to help?

This was announced at at the emergency budget in December, so no, it hadn't crept up on anyone. Life changes, get over it. If you want to moan about rising fuel costs, shout at the oil companies.

Or perhaps shout at HMG whose patent mishandling of the economoy has so diminished the value of Sterling that the recent huge falls in the oil price are passing UK PLC by.

How do you work that out? The oil companies get about 30p out of every pound, which means HMG gets 70p, without the cost of refining the oil or delivering it to petrol stations, get real!.

We the public in this country are going to have to keep an extremely vigilant watch on this government and the tax rises that they will slip in anytime they think they can get away with it. I really would just like them to stop trying to make silk out of brown stuff all the time on the tv as no one believes them anymore and it is getting boring hearing the same pathetic platitudes that time and time again are shown to wrong. Respect your public be honest with your public and they might not like what is happening but they will understand a hell of a lot more then if you keep trying to spin every piece of bad news and make up good news.

Why its Gordon the labour puppet that has agreed to this rise

They do the same thing, year on year, to Train customers. Right down to the fact that the largest train leasing companies (IIRC it is now actually quite difficult for companies to own their own rolling stock) are owned by banks.
Still, so far this year, the government have stuck to the inflation + 2% rule which assuming they follow through on their promises and stick to it will mean train fares go down next year.

Classic misdirection. While the public was busy reading about Jade Goody's death, they leaked it..

Ironically, Max Clifford has said that in the past he was actually employed by the government to leak the Antonia De Sanchez/David Mellor affair while they were busy doing something else they did not want the press to notice.

Both parties do it. I suspect that the Liberals would as well, given half the chance..

If you are referring to my original comment about the trains, well, it's presumably Labour policy as well now. Ok, it may have original been conservative policy, but Labour have had nearly 12 years in which to change it.

Correct and we're now all reaping the benefits of John Prescott's integrated transport policy.......

No - I lived through the power workers strikes, the dustbin mens strikes, and the miners strikes - I don't think we have reached that level of chaos yet (imho).

I read that too, but couldn't find anything to back it up.

Looking online, this graph (from page 20 of this 1999 Parliamentary document) seems to disagree with that statement.

Hmmm. I suppose the average from 1979 to 1990 might be higher than the years immediately before and after this period, even allowing for the 1984/85 data.

Good find.
