You really should have posted in that one :)

It isn't a conspiracy theory, it is currently "work in progress" for isolating audibly certain blood sucking insects and wiping them out....

It isn't even space based, the first trial was using a hand held version, read theregister link on that one it is very good.... I couldn't really do them justice but suffice to say the question was "HOW" was the mozzie tied down

Russia rearming what a shocker NOT this has been on the cards for a few years in related news "bears mess in the woods" and "pope is catholic".

They've come into the money now so what do you expect? They've got oil and gas on tap and are now pulling the strings when it comes to world trade. It was going to happen it was just a case of when.

They haven't, actually - the oil and gas price collapsed and the rouble has devalued considerably against the Euro, which is a shame as the Russians have lots of Euro loans which now cost rather a lot to service.

Remember, what a Russian says isn't necessarily what he means, particularly when he has a domestic economic crisis he might want to deflect attention from.

Re: Russia announces rearmament plan

Relations with Russia have been cooling for a few years now, with former Soviet Bloc states wishing to join NATO.

I see a new the start of a new COLD ERA, I wont say COLD WAR as I don't think it'll that bad but certainly I see diplomatic relations with Russia worsening.

Hey, maybe the Eurofighter wasn't such a bad idea after all?

Well, it's a nice aeroplane and we do have a permanent requirement for air defence fighters with speed and range, but the Russians have, after a brief show of strength, pulled back from their jaunts round the top of Norway. They haven't really got the kit for it on any major basis.

Russia isn't that much of a worry to us, really, they're more interested in Central Asia. They're always interested in Central Asia. They can have it as far as I'm concerned - we should be spending the money weaning ourselves off natural gas, not trying to impersonate the USSR in the 'Stan.

we should pre-emptively strike and wipe them off the planet.

Your plan has one or two little flaws in it, imho
a) we don't have enough nukes to take out all their ICBMs and nuke bombers
b) we may not know where their boomers are all the time
c) a)+b) = us being wiped off the planet, which is not, again imho, an optimal outcome

Oh yes - d) The world has moved on from nuclear sabre-rattling - let's not go back there, please?

Re: Russia announces rearmament plan

Actually, Britain's independent deterrent has always been based on the theory that we can do enough damage to the Russians that they wouldn't launch a limited strike to take us out (limited enough that the US might hesitate to go all-out).

In other words, we can't wipe them out, but we don't need to to deter them.

MAD purely involved the US and USSR - the USSR can wipe out essentially every human being on the British Isles, we certainly cannot do likewise.

We have no nuclear bomber force, our sole nuclear force is Trident SLBMs.

Exactly, the Russians would have had to go somewhat beyond a tactical strike and rather closer to a heavy strike. It's estimated that a full nuclear attack on the UK would be 200MT or higher - doubtful the US would have tolerated that but our independent deterrent was more than strong enough to provoke that from the Russians.

Re: Russia announces rearmament plan

And, the US might have objected if the Russkis nuked their tactical bomber and reconnaisance bases in Upper Heyford and Mildenhall, and the Tac Fighter Wings at Lakenheath and Bentw.ters.....

(not to mention Chicksands and Croughton)

Re: Russia announces rearmament plan

sorry I must've missed a smilie out on my post, I knew you were :D

Regarding this post however, the world gets nervous when the US are permitted to set up missile bases and the like close to Russian borders and then complain when they respond by posting military force in their own borders closer to these areas.... double standards I think.

I care not for the top trumping that is going on, it is all mad.

Hugh 18-03-2009 22:30

Re: Russia announces rearmament plan

Whilst I agree with you in concept, they are, in fact, different sorts of missiles (which, imho, makes a big difference - anti-missile missiles don't destroy entire cities).

mischievious 18-03-2009 22:57

Re: Russia announces rearmament plan

Type of missile is pretty much irrelevant, military presence is the issue (I would also be amazed if only anti missile, missiles were based there). If Russia were piling into latin America the press frenzy would be fierce indeed, I believe that Ecuador is currying favour with the Russians and Chinese.....

hang on looks like everyone is getting worried:

Re: Russia announces rearmament plan

This story made me think of The Simpsons...

The Simpsons - "Simpson Tide"

Homer sparks an international incident after joining the US Navy & somehow ending up captaining a nuclear sub.

Russian UN official - "The Soviet Union will be pleased to offer amnesty to your wayward vessel."

American UN official - "The Soviet Union? I thought you guys broke up?!"

Russian UN official - "That's what we wanted you to think!" (laughter)

Soviet tanks then burst out of carnival floats across Russia, a new Berlin Wall rises up out of the ground, and the zombified corpse of Lenin smashes his way out of his glass coffin with muffled cries of "Must...crush...capitalism...grrr".
