What is it with this repressed barbaric country that it feels the need to flog a 75 year old women for having two unrelated men in her house?
In my opinion its about time the worlds democracies made it clear to Saudi Arabia that their backwards barbaric treatment of their own mothers and daughters is unacceptable in the 21st century. Whether they listen or act is a moot point, we along with many others have turned a blind eye for to long and what for? a few more dollars.
I might add this is not yet another anti-Muslim thread, its a anti-Saudi Wahhabism thread; sanctioning this type of barbaric behaviour is tantamount to giving tacit approval for brutal groups like the Taliban. The house of Saud should stand up to the all to powerful religious police and neuter them, its not just coincidence the vast majority of the 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi.

Not condoning or condemning, they ( 2 men and a women ) lived in the country and knew the laws, why then were they surprised at the outcome of breaking the laws of the land ?

Not slating anyone guys, but its not simple though.

The woman breast-fed one of the men as a baby and under Muslim law this establishes a degree of maternity. She thought this would be sufficient. However the court rejected this through lack of evidence (Who on earth is going to have that kind of evidence)?

I don't think a 75 year old grandmother would be a revolutionist.

The law is wrong. The Saudi's treatment of woman is every bit as wrong as the treatment of woman in Afghanistan.

There's a lot of western support for doing something about it in Afghanistan but not in Saudi.

I wonder why that is? Would things be different if Aghanistan was an oil rich country and Saudi wasn't, or am I just being cynical.

Yes the law is wrong but it is not our place to change it. Yes women are mistreated but it is not our culture it is theirs and not our place to change it

The man is her late husband's nephew. So they are related, but not through blood. She must have wetnursed him because of some issue with his mother.

It's double standards because the Saudis are oil rich. We choose to influence other countries and condem their actions, but we've not to condemn the barbaric punishment of an elderly woman.

She didn't know the law. What harm can a 75 year old be doing alone in a house with a man, she considers to be like her son, and his friend. It is according to their culture that he is considered to be her son because she breast fed him. (I won't ask how many mothers that would give you Zing)

By their law then she's not guilty. If she has misinterpreted or misunderstood the law then compassion should be shown. Anything else is barbaric.

Exactly! Barbaric as it may look and (to our sensibilities) is, the law is the law - no matter how cruel the punishment. Having been to Saudi many times and witnessed the application of the law in it's most brutal of forms - believe me it most certainly emphasises to all people within the country exactly where they stand, if they digress. :erm:

Consequentially they rarely suffer the those problems that we "civilised" Europeans have had to and seem powerless to effectively control, like:

Burglary; Drug dealing; Muggings, etc.

For example, I could (without fear) leave my car parked up, with the doors unlocked, windows down and my wallet on top of the dashboard and know that no-one would take it - such is the effectivness of the law - which applies to all and anyone in the country.

In addition, the application of the law in Saudi works on the principle of "let justice be seen to be done" - something of which (with some of the social crimes we as civilised citizens have to contend with) wouldn't go amiss in the UK!

However (the above considered), I still have to sympathise with the victim in this case.

I understand that they need to know the law of their land but not everyone can choose where they want to live.

I always remember that poor girl that got stoned till che died and that shocked me that this kind of thing still goes on these days.

I think it's about time something was done as it just isnt right.

I do not agree with it at all, nor would most on here either!

Do we have the right to enforce our view points and attitudes on them?

Until we all live in a world that is equal, this is the way it is, however bad and unjust that it is.

Respect is due to all those though that try to change things in other countries, and then suffer persecution and even death by doing so.

i would agree with most of this thread that it is not our place to try to change their laws

we cannot criticize other religions /cultures for trying to manipulate our laws in this country by saying things like "who do they think they are coming to this country and trying to change our laws to suit themselves "and other comments along those lines if we cannot let them live by their own laws in their own country .They make their own laws they should be the ones to change them

although i don't agree with what happened we shouldn't realy interfere .If on the other hand a group of saudi expats were trying to enforce that law in THIS country then that would be a different matter

I would also consider adopting some of their ideas on law enforcement although some seem a bit extreme for the crime it would surely put the fear of god into some of the thugs in this country
