Memory brands?
 

Does anybody have any opinions on Kingston HyperX memory? [for/against]

I usually prefer to stick with the same brands for products until I have a reason not to, but Geil don't seem to have a suitable product at a suitable price at the mo, which means looking at other brands. I was thinking of getting 2 sets of OCZ Platinum [a total of 8GB], but I've seen some Kingston HyperX with the same specs*, & they work out a total of £23 cheaper.

[*DDR2 1066/8500, 5-5-5-18, 2x2GB]

i use ocz with my ddr3 and also when i was using ddr2 from what i have heard kingston isn't that bad but others, might disagree personally i would go for the ocz even if it was cheaper as i have never had a problem with them i currently have mine running at, 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 instead of the stock settings of 7-7-7-20 iirc not sure if it's better having it oc'd or not.

as i say i would go for the ocz but thats just me.

It's the Kingston that's cheaper. If the OCZ was cheaper I would have just got them without bothering to ask.

You mention a difference in the timings, but you don't mention what the stock frequency is, only that you're running it at 1600. I haven't really paid much attention to anything to do with DDR3, so I'm not sure what speeds are available, but if 1600 is the stock & you've only changed the timings, then you haven't overclocked it, you've underclocked it. With the frequency higher is faster, but with timings lower numbers are faster than higher numbers.

As would I, except for the price difference. What I want to know is does anyone think that the Kingston is not worth the saving of £23.40?

I tend to stay away from Kingston, just because they make cheap memory.

I personally prefer Corsair, most of the sticks I've had are from them.

GEiL and OCZ are pretty good too. The best two brands for memory are Corsair and OCZ imo.

Some asus mobos do not like OCZ ram ive seen and heard of a few AM2 boards that do not like it. I have uses Hyper x ddrII in the last 2 amd builds ive done with no issues

I do not use Corsair ive had more Corsair ram go bad in a short time than any other > I like Geil and there snothign wrong with Patriot either . Unless you pay the highest prices all you are getting is value ram anyway

sorry forgot to mention the stock speed was 1333mhz but as i said, i would pay for the ocz rather than kingston because whilst i have heard good things on looking further in to it they are a cheap brand.

if you can afford either then i would say go for the ocz unless you are upgrading something else where you could use the extra cash.

I've had Corsair, and had to warranty stuff (warrantied the warranty replacement once!)

Had crucial. Just Works

Had Kingston. Just Works.

All much of a muchness really!

I'd reccomend Crucial for memory. Never had a problem with them.

Another vote for Crucial here. I'm no expert in these things, but I've bought from them on several occasions and have never had a problem.

I'm with zing on this - never had issues with Geil. sometimes need to up the voltage on it, but then Geil do state themselves that it has a variable operating tollerance.

I have had a couple of dodgy sticks of Corsair XMS2 in the past but I have 2x1GB Dominator in this PC at the moment and it's always been rock solid stable.

Not only that, but so do Nforce boards and Intel chipsets, its ridiculous.

Personally i've had dodgy sticks from Corsair also, and unless they were great on price i wouldn't buy them again.

My preferred brand at the moment is Crucial, rock solid, excellent overclockers and usually come with the best quality chips (considering they actually own micron)

I was going to buy OCZ RAM for my new DDR3 build, but alas, it's an ASUS board so i chose not to this time and went for 4GB of 1600Mhz Kingston HyperX

Despite the grumblings about Kingston in this thread, yes they are known for their value RAM, but they are also the original named brand module manufacturers and their enthusiast hardware is spot on.

Just because they have a large line of value RAM doesn't mean their enthusiast segment is utter *******s.

The first HyperX memory I bought was a matched pair of DDR400 some years ago and they cost me £200 for the pair. As you say Kingston was the only really affordable branded memory for a good long time on the market and was miles ahead of the unbranded crap that used to have at least a 25% doa rate in my experience

Thanks for the info dude, I didn't realise there were still issues between some name brands & certain mobos. I've only had 1 lot of Corsair, AFAIK, & don't recall any probs, but they're not usually a brand I tend to consider anyway.

As I mentioned before, I would have preferred Geil, the Black Dragon ones, but they would have cost me... ~£123 + postage, which I couldn't really afford at the moment.

Yeah, I'm quite fond of them too. I've had 2 or 3 lots of them now without any probs.

I'm still running 4x1GB of Geil Ultra for now, but hopefully should be running 8GB of this from tomorrow. :)
