There are major EU directives(eg working time, recycling) that start life as laws passed in Germany. So anybody complaining about a possible future 'Fourth Reich' is way too late.

I always thought the next Holocaust would be against Muslims. Still, I can't see any mass genocide on the scale of WW2 being permitted these days. It would need to be kept secret and with today's communication technology that would be almost impossible.

IMPORTANT LANGUAGE ANNOUNCEMENT

The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish":

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c"-- Sertainly this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always been a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"'s in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away.

By the 4th year peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z", and "w" with "v". During ze fifz yar, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer.

As regards these crazy far right nutters, personally I think that Russia has far more of a problem with these groups, who seem to be more visible to a more accepting public who look upon these nutters as some sort of patriots. This group in Germany although obnoxious have no chance of resurrecting another thousand year Reich, the vast majority of Germans and the political establishment would come down on them like a ton of bricks if they seriously began garnering support.

Well this certainly isn't the Britain I live in or recognize.

The NPD has been thoroughly infiltrated by the federal german police for constitutional affairs (Verfassungschutz/constitution protection) for many years.
There were two attempts by the federal government to ban the party,but they failed cause of the undercover officers and 'snitches.It's something relating to entrapment,I think.
However,there was a report in a german newspaper recently that said the Verfassungsschutz has 'switched off' it's informants.This is clear sign for another go at banning the party.
In some east german parliaments they have a couple of seats,but as a whole the party is pretty meaningless.
Also,germany has a strong constitution,and it can't just be over-ridden by any government.They would have a very long way to go to achieve their 'Fourth Reich'

The reason Germany has a strong decentralised constitutional arrangement is precisely to stop a Fourth Reich, if you think about it. In 1945 this seemed rather important...

Yes,indeed.Now the constitution can be quite a pain as well,cause both Upper and Lower house of parliament (Bundestag and Bundesrat) are needed to pass a law.As Bundestag members are comprised of federally elected politicians and Bundesrat of state-elected ones,sometimes they block each others votes to show who's boss,depending on what party has the most seats.

I wish we had a constitution sometimes,i'd imagine it could make some things easier (taking government to court)

Certain nutjobs have been planning the fourth reich since the third one collapsed so this is not new at all. I doubt at this time whether they are anywhere near cohesive enough to pose a serious threat but we must always be vigilant in keeping track of them. I am not going to worry too much about this at the minute.
