ITV Player HAS arrived

Not sure if I'm the first to brake the news on this site, but, thought I'd check Catch UpOn Demand this morning about 10 mins ago, and there ir was "itv net player".
I know it's been eagerly anticipated, so wanted to post this before I start work. There is a list of programs from the last seven days, but whilst ITV is now on the TV Choice section, nothing has yet been added.
Surprised me as BBC iPlayer was advertised well in advance, and 24th feb was just a rumour.
Any way, off to work,

The rollout is being split up over a few days.

Knowsley Platform 24th February
Langley Platform 25th February
Bromley Platform 26th February

So don't panic if you don't have it today.

Yes. I only have a partial launch. There is no tv choice content, certainly no HD content whatsoever, only 5 pages of catch up. I was wondering when for those that do have it the launch would be completed.

There is no information in the public domain to say that VM have even signed a deal with Five for an on demand service. I expect they are in talks though (Media Boy thinks so) as I have already pointed out Five have had an agreement with BT Vision for some months and in their submission for the HD slot on freeview they talk about all sorts of goodies. I know this must be very disappointing for you but other than saying probably in 2009 there's not a lot to go on.

Well I have just watched dickensons real deal on ITV PLAYER and thought it was great to watch it without adverts but annoying when a message kept on coming on the screen telling me the competion had closed when it hadn't(the competition closes tomorrow morning).

Yes, you're absolutely correct, it was mentioned it WOULD be arriving.
Anyway, I looked at Media boys "coming to..." and people had already posted stuff on there, so I wasn't first. But, appear to have been the first Thread, on the tv section at least.

Oh I think it's terrific - I can now not watch Jeremy Kyle (and therefore feel thoroughly sophisticated) every minute of every day, and not just when it's on!

Or, if I so wish, I can watch it ironically and feel like the type of person who can use terms like "self perpetuating," "bohemian" and "post modern" with a straight face.

Bliss!

Sam

It's probably required because the programme will still be available when the competition does close, and they don't want to have to upload the programme again when the compo closes.

I love Jerry K, my hero, my misses and I used to spend the morning of our day off watching Jeremy Kyle, this stoped when our schedules changed, now we can watch it anytime we are together.
Brilliant, we can remember our relationship isn't as bad as all that.

I'm guess i'm kinda hoping that the utter dregs of society you find appearing on Jeremy Kyle don't actually exist.

Alsom the Jeremy Kyle show is all about Jeremy Kyle and not trying to help to poor *******s who appear on it...

One reason there aren't ads maybe due to VM paying ITV, where as, on the internet, they make no revenue at all, other than from adverts.

Also, Cracker was a brilliant series, I haven't checked the TV choice section lately, glad they have put that on.

Having had a look again the tv choice section seems to be growing by the hours with a "comedy" section and "entertainment" section. There are 5 things listed now.

I don't think there will be any HD content on the Catch up service - it's more likely to be in the TV Choice section. Should find out for sure soon enough.

demented 26-02-2009 19:25

Re: ITV Player HAS arrived

It should be interesting what appears in tv choice which is growing by the hour (or even more on demand which is where the BBC put their HD stuff) as ITV and virgin signed an agreement for 500hrs. I would be seriously impressed if they did reach that.

KnightRider 26-02-2009 19:36

Re: ITV Player HAS arrived

is that 500 hours of the same content for a year or swap and change content monthly like 4od

demented 26-02-2009 20:03

Re: ITV Player HAS arrived

I suspect it probably means 500 hours to pool stuff from so not 500hrs on there at a time but we'll see. Virgin tend to exaggerate numbers with VOD or spin things in a very positive light e.g. star trek on demand. Still, any new content that doesn't pinch space off something else is good. I think the 40hrs of catch up (that does seem to be about on the money) will be very popular.

Just watched my first programme on ITV Net Player, The Colour of Money, and found the picture quality great. I also like the fact that there isn't a lengthy ident at the beginning like the BBC iPlayer programmes.

I think I will be using the ITV Net Player a lot :)

Yes i had a look at a couple of programs. Law and Order UK and Wild at Heart. Both were good picture quality. Also no adverts. That has to be good. Like ER on 4 on catch up on demand. No adverts. Great.
I shall be watching more and more on demand stuff in future. Less recording.:)

Unfortunately there will be ads on the cable version too. VM have been trialling such a system for about a year. When the EPG gets its next upgrade, probably around summer time, then I'd imagine the ads would be implemented then. But hopefully the ads will appear only at the beginning of the programmes, rather than during them.

ITV Player finally arrived in London yesterday. I was expecting a similar number of programmes to the web version. Anyone any idea if and when we can expect the same content on VM as on the web - or is that just wishful thinking?

The catch up service contract is for about 40hrs a week. So as it stands at the moment I doubt that will change very radically at all. I don't use the web version though, do you mean tv choice on demand section as that's something I'd like to know myself.

I've actually been wondering about this. It wouldn't be too bad if it was perhaps 15-30 seconds of ads, but a full ~4 minute ad break that you couldn't fast forward through would be hell, and very unpopular I'd imagine.

This is one of the reasons why I'm all for using VOD technology to show personalised TV ads - ITV, C4 and the rest are dependent on ad revenue, and if they can prove (well, not 100% prove obviously, but reasonably demonstrate) to the advertisers that ads are getting shown to people who are actually interested in the product, it logically follows that they could charge more for showing them.

For example, it's pointless showing me debt consolidation (my debt is fine in bite-sized chunks, thank you very much!), personal injury (if I've been hit by a car or something, I was more than likely not looking where I was going) and car (even if I was about to learn to drive - which I'm not - there's virtually nowhere to park in a city centre and anyway I certainly wouldn't be stupid enough to buy a brand new car as my first) ads. However, bombard me with ads for the new MacBook (hmm, perhaps debt consolidation might not be so irrelevant!) and the Palm Pre, when it arrives here (I'm a shameless Apple fanboi and I love my iPhone, but I really did love my Treos just as much) and you'd be onto something...

I record all the programmes I want to see onto my V+ anyway, but if we start to get more HD programmes coming through, I will be using more space on the hard drive, which will force me into considering other ways of seeing the programmes my wife and I want to watch when we want to watch them.

One of the options (which I use on a limited basis at the moment) is to access some of these programmes via Video on Demand (eg Question Time on the BBC i-Player). Clearly, there is more opportunity to use VOD as back up now that we have the ITV Net Player and I will certainly use this. However, if they start putting advertisements in half way through the programmes, they won't get me watching them! One, or maybe two advertisements just before the programme I might put up with, but anything else and I won't be watching the ITV Net Player if I can't fast forward through the advertisements.

Judging by what the internet version has, it will only be one advert. This is a little extended though.

I know what you mean but I guess Coronation Street and other soaps will be popular with some.
I have no interest at all in current ITV1 output but the other channels particularly ITV4 do interest me since ITV did produce some excellent programming many years ago. It was good to see some ITV4 content going onto on-demand and hopefully there will be a lot more in future.
