Is this PC any good?

..for the price?

Been considering getting another PC so junior can use this one (also Aldi supplied, spec. below) for homework. surfing etc. Would this be a good buy for a novice like me who just wants a simple life?.... :)

Cheers!

"gfx is suspect"
"They give you 4 gig of ram then 32 bit Vista go figure."

I wish I could understand you! But then if I could you'd be virtually unemployed around here..... :D

Re: Is this PC any good?

Because the max 32bit reports is 3.5gb ;)

It will be an ok pc for the price, but you will probably want to be changing the GFX at some point if you like your games high quality.

The gfx is not very good

It all depends on what you want to use it for and how much you really want to spend max.My usual advice is come up with a max spend and then add at least 10% lol tell us what you need it for and how much you are prepared to spend absolute max and we can see what we can find

Re: Is this PC any good?

ahhh right. Not into games on the PC so no issues there. So only 4gb isn't great for Vista 32bit then?....

southwell 30-01-2009 15:06

Re: Is this PC any good?

Well it will still run fine but you need a 64bit OS to get the max out of the CPU and RAM.

lol - I just want a PC which I can operate, won't cost a bomb and won't let me down all the time. My current low spec Medion has been fine for what I use it for but is getting old so an upgrade is on the cards at some point and this seemed very reasonable at face value to a novice like me.... ;)

Oh right I see - is the problem the other way around then i.e. the CPU and RAM are far more than is required to run the Vista version being supplied??...

it is fine for what you need it for if you fancy it go for it :)

That's the sort of language I like Zing..... ;)

I was wondering about the AMD processor - do you know anything about them? I don't want to be buying something which might have reliability issues in that area.

Re: Is this PC any good?

I don't know anything about the AMD processors as i stopped using them a couple of years back but i used to sell Medions many moons ago and found them surprisingly good for the price, they come with nice warranties too.

"64 bit is included on the dvd" does that mean you could install that over the 32 bit OS?

Depends on the licence on the PC. I doubt it though. All our corp keys at work differ from 32 to 64 bit OS's.

I build plenty of AMD systems still. You have to cater for the budget and you can get a better balance of performance over value when using AMD. < 400 quid machines are easier to spec with a profit than Intel ;)

Our primary supplier at work (Stone Computers/Compusys) does this. However, we use our own OS installs. one for XP with SP3, and one each for 32 and 64 bit Vista (both with SP1).

Funnily enough, very little of our software gains much from the 64bit architecture (we have some software that really does take advantage of it, but not much), but we found that users were complaining that they weren't getting the 4gig (or more) of RAM that they asked (and in some cases paid) for.

if it is a retail cd key that is provided then yes you will be able to, however if it is a oem key then no you wont.

i am running vista home premium 32bit with 4gb of ram and windows shows all 4gb, and runs fine i will be going back to 64bit though when i get my waterblock fixed , for my 2nd gtx280 unless the creative drivers are still pants.

i say go for it as it seems good for the price and if you ever wanted to play games, you only need to change the graphics card and possibly the power supply.

i had a amd x2 6000+ and it was great only changed from it because i wanted quad core and amd's are not that good so went for intel instead.

Re: Is this PC any good?

If you really want one of ALDI or LIDL's PC offers you have to be at the door the moment they open, and get to the till before the staff buy them all (so I've been told).

If they are on display there is often a mad scramble to beat the guy who have come in to buy the lot in one go (for resale at a profit?).

If not on display I have seen customers told "They didn't come in" then the items brought out for sale to someone else later.

One ex-store admin/checkout operator/cleaner/stacker/lorry unloader told me that he could sell dozens of the PCs or whatever, but they only normally get a couple or three in for sale.

I heard some time ago that you could order from store manager, no personal experience to back this up.

Don't forget it does not come with a monitor.

Re: Is this PC any good?

When Aldi do offers on technological items, they are generally really good. I'd say it is. It has a couple of flaws which have been pointed out. But it will still handle general computer use very well. Playing new games, it would struggle then.

This is getting quite a dissing on the Aldi/Medion fan forum - www.medionsupport.com
Doesn't have the usual tuner etc.

The one getting praise is the Tesco Medion - though it's down to a few at some odd stores.

If Aldi are true to form, a better Medion should be along in a month or two, a bit higher in price but armed with with a decent Intel duo or quad and a midrange graphics, plus the usual kit of DVB tuner.

I have to say I was surprised to see it doesn't have the usual analogue/DVB-T/DVB-S combo tuner fitted - nor the LG Blu-ray player supplied with some of their rigs??

As said, it may be a good idea to wait for the next one?

Useful feedback guys - thanks.
