Watch your job

Re: Watch your job
Why, what's it doing?
|
Re: Watch your job
No need,
As far as I know my job was not advertised, and there hasn't been a competitive tendering process, which hasn't been won legitimately by an Italian contractor. But as soon as it is, I'll let you know. |
Re: Watch your job
Nor mine. I'm at a loss to understand what the Unions are agitating for here. They say they want the right to have the opportunity to work. They do have that right. And the employer also has the right not to give that work to a group of people it believes to be less competitive.
Our Trades Unions also tend to be pro-Europe, pro-Euro and basically pro-anything that comes out of Brussels and is a perceived advantage to their cause (such as the working time directive). But when Europe turns round and bites them on the bum, they're the first to start moaning. I presume they understand that barring Italians from taking contracts in the UK would require the UK to derogate from huge chunks of its commitment to the EU? In any case, isn't a lot of what's going on today perilously close to secondary action, which is illegal? |
Re: Watch your job
I agree with Chris here, it's a free market and the employer can chose who they give their business too. You can't protest your way into a job, especially not one from a private company
|
Re: Watch your job
I've been listening to some of the coverage of this dispute on the radio and think that if the companies concerned are deliberately using foreign labour when there are local people just as (if not better) able to do the work then it's quite unfair. It's probably all down to saving money however.
I wonder how the BBC's journalists would respond if their employers decided to save the licence payer some cash by bringing in cheaper EU staff... |
Re: Watch your job
People might (rightly IMO) feel there's a moral duty to see jobs go to UK companies first but it seems like others need to realise that tendering jobs is (and has been for many years) a tried and tested method for business growth and also 100% legal.
|
Re: Watch your job
Isn't this what free market economics within the ECC is about?

Re: Watch your job
I suppose we are striving to become more European, and we've started by thinking that we're French.

Hey i am all for free market as longs as it applies in every area but as it doesn't for us in the UK jobs in british facilities should go to british workers and we do of course have our valiant pm who feels the same way as he said. I have a lot of sympathy with good men that simply want to work and have a job although i might disagree with they way they try and do it. I am completely biased against unions so wouldn't be fair to comment on their involvement in this but as usual i suspect it more a case of projecting power on their behalf more then doing whats right for the men and women in this case.
|
Re: Watch your job
It's a private company so it's their decision. What do they want to happen, the Government to force them to use British labour? It's protectionism and it's does not work.
|
Re: Watch your job
we are in a economic depression it is time to close ranks and look after ourselves first. if the plant was located in france/italy then im opinion the contract would have been awarded to the local workforce.
|
Re: Watch your job
I'm sure a bit of protectionism at times like this isn't going to bring down the world and a lot of countries are talking in terms of protectionism so why not us.
|
Re: Watch your job

1. Because it can turn round and bite you on the bum. If you slap trade tariffs on imports from a certain country, then you can expect retaliatory tariffs on your exports to that country. 2. Because within the EU it's illegal. People often complain that they voted for the Common Market, not the wide-ranging European Union we now have. If that's the case, then surely the one thing all but the most hardened Euro-separatists must agree on is that the principles of a common market should be upheld in bad times as well as good? |
Re: Watch your job

You can't be bullish and force companies to bend to your will, British ones may be able to be forced to use British labour but at the expense of a lot of other investment and jobs. Also, They won't be able to compete with companies based in countries which do allow them to cut costs and hence won't grow. Again, less jobs. |
Re: Watch your job
I like many many other people in this country have never had any vote on the EU or how little or much we want to be involved in it and those who did have a vote in the seventies didn't realise they were voting for what we have now. There used to be an attitude of "when times are hard look after your own" seems reasonable to me and lets be honest other countries have that attitude so why is it so bad for us to have it. I am not saying we should impose trade tariffs or anything like that i am saying that if a company is in the UK making profit it isn't that much to ask them to prioritise british labour with a bit of preferantial treatment when times are hard. Why is it so bad to look after your own rather then keep playing by the rules all the time.

We have foriegn companies bringing in foriegn workers, l have said on another thread, that there is decent guys in this country, who can do the same work, and also to the high standard, and also to health standards at work.
We already have a power station in Kent, being built by POLISH workers, l support the strikers, very strongly - stand up for your rights and your British jobs. |

Re: Watch your job
It's not like Total (a foreign company, btw) only employs foreign workers though - is this not just one contract, which after a proper tender went out to the most competitive bidder... which happened to be a contractor using workers from mainland Europe.
Should they go with British bids instead, even if they're not as good for Total's business in some way? [a French business operating in the UK which still employs Brits and which still contributes to the British economy] |
Re: Watch your job
I work on a plant a few doors down from LOR and even our operators are joining in the protest as we all think 'will it be us next time?' and for all you politicly correct people lets just see how you, your wife, your kids feel when the mortgage is due and some other worker who contributes bugger all to the economy is doing the job you are highly skilled to do.
There are times to take the high ground and be all smug and loving everyone equally, now is not one of those times, we need British tradesmen doing British jobs. |

Or perhaps we should tell Total (& all the other European, & American, & Asian, etc.) companies operating in the UK to "ends in off" & let them go home & give jobs to their own people? With all these strikes in France, maybe a French company should be giving jobs only to the French... If we force companies to employ only British workers, how does that work? Do we just ignore EU rules? Do we pull out of the EU completely? Do we allow some EU workers here, but only in certain industries or areas? Do we force companies to accept bids which are less competitive than ones they would have otherwise accepted, which may then affect the business, & maybe then make them think "we should 'ends in off' out of here before it costs us even more"? How would we do it? |

It could be argued that the economic troubles in the 1970's in this country were caused by protectionism to. With the only thing saving us being North Sea gas coming on stream.

Re: Watch your job
To be honest, I think people are just preconditioned to blame problems on an external source. In this case other countries. I am not sure if any of the people who suggest these companies should go elsewhere actually have much of an idea of what that would entail.

british jobs for british workers |
Re: Watch your job
It was shown earlier this week, a photo in the national press, where THREE foriegn workers going into work, sticking there fingers up at us, now if this is not stirring up trouble, l don't know what it.
And the main problem is, that major companies are, and still will use agency workers, as they know that, the worker who will turn up will be foriegn, and these people know, that they can get rid of them quite easily, as they know there is someone who will fill that place, Major companies in the UK, will carry on doing this, as they know that the so called PM, won't stop it. The PM made a statement quite recently, BRITISH JOBS, NEED BRITISH WORKERS, but will that happen NO, as he won't want to upset these companies, what we need to do, is the next by election, choose a new MP, that is NOT Labour, Labour used to be a party for the workers of this country, and yet look where it has got us. I have a sneeky feeling, that within the next couple of weeks, all the unions in this country, will say enough, is enough, and call on the country to march onto London, and there will be a total closure to show that we need to stick up for our man or woman, - l think l will stand as a MP, who will support me, l will get this country running again. |
Re: Watch your job
Do you have a link to the photo? Who/what were they sticking their fingers up at? Us, or the tabloid photographer?
Do you think the Tories would be a party for the workers of this country? |

Even before the recession it was very high. The country is immaterial. My point was if you tell these companies is do as you say, give British workers the jobs, and restrict them, why would they want to set up here? Jobs will be lost if you impose these kind of rules on companies? The recent strikes send a message to Total, and why would they want to set up more of their company here if this is what happens? |

I do wonder if those shouting it's ok would be doing so if it were their livelihoods under threat from this and i don't think they would. It's easy to say it's legal and ok when your not the one affected by it but a whole different story if your going home each night wondering how long you might have before you lose your house and can't afford to look after your family. They are protesting trying to save jobs and work and some on here are slating them for it so i suppose they should all just shut up march quietly to the dole queue so the righteous minority on here can then have a go against benefit claimants being lazy and drinking stella allday. My question remains as before, why did the companies tendering for the contract, who might have employed an UK workforce, not get awarded the job in favour of an Italian company with an existing complement of workers? I still maintain the problem is probably more to do with the UK 'package' being uncompetitive - in my opinion we should be directing more effort to redress that balance, rather than complaining 'it isn't fair' ????? Remember 'Auf Wiedersen Pet'? - loads of UK construction workers going to Germany wasn't a problem, then, when they had a skills shortage. In my opinion we should be protesting about the bigger picture of the lack of vocational training opportunities, which is keeping us uncompetitive, rather than concentrating on just one contract ???? |

Re: Watch your job
This government does a lot of talking about skill's and training and has not backed it up at all and we let them get away with it. While i know some believe life on benefit is a dream it isn't and 99% on it would happily retrain to get the skill's to get jobs and have long term job prospects what is stopping them simple there are no adequately funded ways for unemployed people to obtain the skill's at a level that would help our shortage and their long term needs.
Trainng schemes for the unemployed are largely lousy and don't lead to more then nvq level 2 for most on benefit in areas where there are already plenty of people to do the job. What we need is to clearly identify the area's where we have a shortfall in skill's and then setup regional centre's equipped and capable of training people on benefit to adequate standards to fill those gaps. Do that and you will see a massive interest from benefit claimants to take those courses. While we have a government that talks and does nothing were going to have the same problems again and again and nothing will ever change and i don't think this government has any real interest in changing things in this regard it is far easier to talk tough on benefit talk down to the people on it and give them no real help while all the time talking as if the help is there and not being taken up. |

The bottom line is, that foriegn workers ARE taking British jobs, And with the recession biting very hard, have decided enough is enough.
There is probably Lorry loads of foreign workers coming through the channel tunnel, ready to take the work tomorrow. I support any striker, who supports the right to work. and this the right for every worker who holds a British passport. When the European Union expanded member states were given the opportunity to put a limit on the number of foreign workers that they would allow in the country.
The Germans immediately put a maximum quota, our government however, did nothing. It's no good blaming businesses that are working totally within the confines of the law. You want to blame somebody? Blame the government. You want to change it? vote UKIP or some other party. |

I have sympathy for the workers who have not been even able to apply for the jobs because of cheap labour, is that ok ??? The fact is there are people who have not got jobs over this. This government had the opportunity to put temporary restrictions to our labour markets, they did not, thinking only a thousand or so would come through. Foreigners should only be considered if the job has been advertised here and other suitable candidates have not been found. 70,000 skilled workers have entered this country over the last 3 years, they have been able to do this even if they have no job to come to. Contracts to overseas companies operating here should be outlawed if they do not offer jobs to suitable workers here first. Brown was warned about the unrest we are now seeing, he chose to do nothing. So yes I have every sympathy for workers who were born here being done out of a job by a foreigner wanting to do that job for less money and under less safety standards. |

No offence but if workers from abroad work better, for cheaper aka minimum wage then what's the problem. Im not saying British workers are all lazy, tea-drinking whores - but seriously; if you had your own business and you could choose to pay somebody £5 an hour compared to £10 for the same work, maybe even a bit better!, then why wouldn't you.
Obviously the British Workers have their 'standard' wage, but they have to understand that in the employers world, cheaper and better is the way up instead of homegrown labour which is poor. |
