As a regular viewer of TopgearTV I'm disappointed that this has come out (if, that is, its as true as we are had to believe).

I enjoy the whole secrecy regarding Stiggy :)

I didn't go looking for the story, I was emailed it as an avid Autoblog.com RSS feeder...they shouldn't allowed to release such information! I prefer the not knowing!

The identity of Black Stig was revealed to be Perry McCarthy when his book Flat Out, Flat Broke was published in 2002. McCarthy is a former Formula 1 driver and test driver for the Benetton, Arrows and Williams teams, and also tested for BMW F1.

This is one of the best parts of Top Gear, the Stigs secret identity, The Telegraph and the one last week (i cant remember who) should have not pressured the BBC or Collins and kept there mouth shut!

Yes everyone wants to know but this Stig is good and now he will loose his job & be fired off a jumbo jet or something this time

I for one enjoy the mystry surrounding the Stig and would be very unhappy if this turns out to be true. I think the identity of The Stig should only be revealed in the last show should Top Gear ever go off air for good.

i've known that was the Stig for a long time so yes that is who it is. He was a British F3 champion and also writes for Autosport and a number of other motor racing mags.

With the number of celebs they have on the star in a reasonably priced car i'm amazed this hasn't come out long ago

wel I guess I didn't know for certain as I had been told over at DS and not everything on the net is true.

I also heard about Julian Bayley being the Stig before again only via the internet so no real way of knowing if it was true.

The original one was Perry McCarthy and that is mentioned on the cover of his biography so that one is true

Agreed Punky... although they're "officially" saying it was Graham Hill ;) which is obviously a prank, they're just trying to put smoke and mirrors up to stop people digging further

There have been other stigs,

for example when they had, I think it was a Renault, F1 car go round the test track, that was a Renault Test Driver in the stig uniform not the usual stig.

They also had differing stigs when they been testing prototypes and such like.
