TFT Monitor Recomendations?

Hi All,

Anybody recommend any make / model of a monitor?

General specs:

22" TFT Widescreen
VGA + DVI Inputs
<5ms Response

Anything else a bonus!

Cheers
Lee

I have an LG 20" LCD monitor, which connects using VGA. I love it.

Maybe this is something like you're looking for.

I have the SM2253bw which is a very simular monitor, very bright, very sharp.

Lots of recommendations in http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/19...ecommends.html, however some of those might not now be available given the pace of technology.

my prefered 22" monitor at home is this one... Samsung are hard to beat when it comes to quality for price

Ummmm - another £50...I was budgeting for around £130.

Not sure my desk would take 24" TFT!!

I have the Samsung 226BW, and it's been great, even for gaming and movies. Can get them for a good price now too.

Re: TFT Monitor Recomendations?

I've only ever owned one monitor that was not a Samsung. I then sold it and bought another Samsung! really can't fault them. solid and great picture. I'm sure the one I have has been updated by now as I've had mine for some time, but I've no need to change it.

I have this Advent monitor. I quite like it. Well... its better than the 17" I had before it

idi banashapan 18-01-2009 15:51

Re: TFT Monitor Recomendations?

bare in mind advent is a home brand and would use cheaper components, usually sourced from slightly older stocks of panels than the newest named brands such as samsung, philips, sony, etc.

CHiLL 18-01-2009 16:43

Re: TFT Monitor Recomendations?

I was under the impression that Advent simply re-branded other companies things and sold them on. Such as my TV, which is made by someone else, but has a 'Technosonic' label on it.

idi banashapan 18-01-2009 19:39

Re: TFT Monitor Recomendations?

i believe advent is PC Worlds home brand. but in the same light, Technosonic would do as previously mentioned. buy up old stock of panels and components usually 2 or more years old and rebrand.

Hmmm, i have a 22" advent monitor, 2 advent laptops, and a 10watt advent PC speaker set.

IMHO, looking for a DVI connection is a good idea. If it's DVI-I it'll also support VGA with the right adapter.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

Consider getting a display that'll rotate into portrait mode. I find this very useful.

Some also have video input too that might be handy if you have a games machine or an STB you might want to connect.

Aria always used to be a good place to look for monitors:

perhaps not everyone is a res junky and perhaps not everyone wants to pay the 22" to 24" gap price hike for anything descent. 22" is plenty for everyday use.

Well I was thinking of using my TV as a TV instead of my monitor and getting a ncie 24inch screen. But 32 to 24 is a lot of acerage to loose when you need it.

They were taken with my phone, I understand what you mean though, you have to be sat in front of it to appreciate just how good it is. But £140 for a samsung with these specs is a steal. £151.00 inc next day delivery.

Oh, what's up with my flag? And that isn't cake. ;)

Re: TFT Monitor Recomendations?

Was in a PCWorld today (just looking) - and looked at that Samsung T220 - looked ok - but thought it was a bit plastic looking and it wobbled around on it's stand.

Been put of that Samsung for those reasons...

So it might be nice Dell or HP screen - they appear to have a better build quality!

admars 24-01-2009 22:47

Re: TFT Monitor Recomendations?

Isn't the problem with both Dell or HP though that they don't make them themselves a such, so you don't know exactly what you're getting? If you're lucky the components inside, are good ones from one of the better makes of screens, if you're unlucky they older components, or from a lesser manufacturer?

I think they are made by samsung (the panels, anyway) and sometimes Philips.

I think there are only a few manufacturers that produce the actual TFT panels - but it's the other companies that put together the electronic gubbins that drive the panel and get the best out of it.

It's sometime those other bits of electronics that let the whole panel down - performance wise...

idi banashapan 25-01-2009 13:36

Re: TFT Monitor Recomendations?

thus my emphasis on it being the panels. :)

OMG Dell are releasing theirs in Feb

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/g...us&l=en&s=corp

If the prices are similar over here we are looking about £300 for a 24" model . There will be loads about this year then excellent news. I modify all my advice now and say wait for LED

EDIT From what I am reading perhaps the news is not so good. These appear to be LED backlite screens meaning you have a lower power consumption
OLED is what we are really waiting for and this is not it yet

I too have been doing some reading and it seems currently OLEd displays don't last very long....or not even as long as a normal TFT.

Quote:

While OLED seems to be, on the surface, the perfect display technology, there are some problems. First of all, even though the red and green LEDs have long lifetimes of 10,000 to 40,000 hours, the blue component suffers high failure rates after about 3,000 – 5,000 hours.
