bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
In any other year there would be a stand out winner but this year any one of about 5 people Could win the thing.
If you ask me Rebecca Adlington should win just for the things she managed to do at the 08 Games yes i know Hamilton did great things.but he had more help along the way than Adlington For that along she should win. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_a...ar/7751044.stm |
Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
I hope Hamilton doesnt win it, there are people that have put more effort in over a longer period of time to get what they won at the olympics. I'm not saying Hamilton isn't talented, i just think F1 isn't a fair playing field.
Perhaps this should have been a poll ;) |
Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
Good idea if the OP agrees?? Shall we add a poll to this thread to end on the 13th???
The final list is

Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
Joe Calzaghe all the way.

Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
hamilton without a doubt. he has an undeniable talent behind the wheel and has only improved it by racing since he was a young lad. he's done outstandingly well over his first 2 seasons in the top flight, becoming world champion in only his second season.

I'd say Calzage. Why is Amir Khan not on the list? Not saying I'd vote for him but I know plenty that would. |

If on the other hand I had Hamilton's car AND a german mate who probably has some friends at mercedes, who drops 15 seconds on the last corner of his lap, pulling over to allow me to pass through, then I would have finished first in the championship! |

What, Amir 'glass chin' Khan? I don't think he's more deserving than any person on that list by some distance. |

Secondly, his German 'friend' who you feel 'pulled over' was actually on Dry tyres in increasingly wet (becoming downpour) condition. I challenge you to put 700bhp on a very wet road on tyres that have around 10% of the grip they would in conditions they were designed for and keep the car in a straight line, let alone getting over the finish line. |

Eleanor Simmonds the 13 year old who got 2 gold & a silver, not a mention |
Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
I'd say Nicole Cooke. Has done plenty riding for team GB in various Road Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic glory. She's far more successful than any of the male cyclists we've ever produced and proven she can win different events.

Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
Hmmm that's very strange mo because earlier in the race there was bad weather and the cars that were worst affected were Toyotas. So bad infact that Glock's team mate was sliding around like crazy and nearly took off a couple of the competitors (which would have been very handy for hamilton). It was a crazy gamble but the same behaviour had been observed earlier in the race: the toyotas were appalling in those conditions.

Anyway, I dont think Hamilton deserved the championship and, bringing the subject back on topic, I definately don't think he deserves to win Sports Personality of the Year. His dad showed more personality, maybe he should be on the list. |

Calzaghe wasn't even in the top 3? What a joke.

Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
i think the fact that there were only 9 votes in this poll tells you that it is not what it used to be.

Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
Well this non sporty person thought that it was a very close event this year.Tis a pity that there can only be one winner because they all deserved to win..in any other year they all would have been worthy.
How many years lately has there been too few outstanding sports men and women then in one year there are more than you can shake a trophy at? |

True! And good to see the Olympians have their moments again. My vote was with Adlington... and I wonder how many voters took 'Sporting personality of the year' into consideration. What the heck... it was great to watch Hoy bringing home the gold too. :D |
Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
Being an F1 fan I would have voted for Lewis, but Chris Hoy is totally deserving as well, excellent achievement.
|
Re: bbc Sports Personality of the year 2008
As mentioned above by Coggy, in any other year the award could have gone to any of the top six, I feel though overall the choice of Hoy was correct...three gold medals in one Olympics a worthy winner indeed.
As regards the others in my opinion it was going to be between Adlinton, Calzaghe, Hamilton and Hoy, all had a truly remarkable year. One thing that does make me smile is the title sports "personality", then Andy Murray.;) |

Calzaghe, I am reliably informed (not a fan of out-and-out contact sport), should have had a better appreciation, Hamilton has a few years to acclaim the title..... and - I just really liked Adlington....... Hoy seems to me to be a quiet and committed stalwart and am glad he was recognised. |
