Atheist ads on London buses

I'm interested in people's views on this (as the other thread has gone rather off-topic). Money has been raised, and some London buses will carry the following message: 'God (probably) doesn't exist. Relax, and get on with your life. What do you think?

Halcyon 25-10-2008 00:38

Re: Atheist ads on London buses

I think it is a load of rubbish personally.
How on earth will being told "God probably doesnt exist" make someones life better.
I doubt it will.
The amount of money that has been spent on this could have been spent on much better things.

I'm usually in favor of a counterpoint to the religious propaganda that infests society, but there are better ways to go about it, and if you have enough cash to waste on that sort of nonsense, spend it on charity instead.

Re: Atheist ads on London buses

I didnt think religious advertising was at such a high level that atheists felt morally obliged to counter it with signs on buses. I didnt realise that posters outside churches were considered religious advertising by many.

I saw my first religious billboard advertising Islam a few weeks ago. Was quite suprised to see it to be honest.

Re: Atheist ads on London buses

I don't believe most atheists give a dam* about the subject, let alone argue about it. Most atheists believe in science, what they can see, smell, touch etc, not the Almighty. The subject to atheists just isn't that important.

If people want to waste money on advertising, OK. I certainly wouldn't.

Angua 25-10-2008 09:39

Re: Atheist ads on London buses

May be that most atheists are a live and let live bunch who normally go about their lives without even thinking about those who worship and advertise their god, but feel this is a way of letting people know there are alternatives out there and the idea has snowballed.

The biggest irony of the whole thing is that without the various religions complaining or commenting and thus providing more news coverage this whole campaign would have remained low key.

It worked well for Life of Brian ;)

Are they moaning and complaining, or are they making comment when invited to do so by the Press? There is a big difference.

Russ you can't accuse someone of Christian-bashing just because you don't agree with it. it's even unfair to me that you accuse me of doing that.

It is inevitable that things will be posted that others might take offense to, and others find amusing. that is unfortunately what happens when the subject happens to be about something as in depth as religion.

I made my views the other day that I personally would ban any discussions on religion, as this will always happen.
one person takes offense, whilst others might not.

It is not, and was not my intention to cause offense even. what I posted was a quote from The Telegraph page.

Whatever - I'm not happy about this thread as it will inevitably go the same way as the other one and as soon as it does it will get merged. Probably not by myself but it WILL get merged.

Asking what people's reaction would be in a court or hospital is nothing to do with adverts on buses. You're not taking this off-topic via the backdoor.

Do what you want Russ. I know that you are a strong believer in God, and anything I say or do is going to upset you.
So again I will step back from this religion thread as well, as it's clear to me that you don't like anyone stating their views or opinions, but actually come across to me that you just want your own and will ridicule others that you don't agree with.

Speaking of which: Could a kind mod please add a poll to this thread? I started this one because I am genuinely interested in people's views and the numerical breakdown on this, and I don't think the other thread is appropriate for the poll.

I suggest the following question and options:

Do you agree?

No, it's needlessly antagonising/offensive
No, for other reasons
Yes, it gives a voice to Atheists
Yes, for other reasons
Undecided.

Personally, I'm not quite sure yet, I'm leaning towards option 3, but have concerns over option 1. One thing I am sure of is that it would certainly bring a smile to my face if I came out of the tube and saw one of these buses drive by.

Actually, the reason I was late in posting the poll was because I was thinking about proper/unbiased wording of the options. I guess there is no such thing. There is a 'no, for other reasons' option. There's also the thread to post in. :)

I voted it is ok for others reasons because whatever your belief is this is a country of free speech and if it is ok for churches to have their quaint little posters outside then this has to be ok as well. For those that feel this is needlessly offensive or antagonising i can't say i understand why it's a few words on the side of a bus and will not directly affect you nor is it as far as i can see attacking any faith merely putting forward a view that many believe in. I can't help feel some people are way too sensitive about things that are nothing really and certainly not something important enough to waste any worry over so maybe an attitude of "whatever" would be better rahter then getting upset about it.

Re: Atheist ads on London buses

i voted yes it gives a voice to atheists, not that we need a voice ,you cant actually change the laws of physics or evolution to fit your beliefs , but you can threaten people with with all sorts of punishment if they don't believe in god, not any god of course it has to be the one the only god , but it seems there's so many it gets confusing, but you would think that just leads to more debate[only it doesn't ]it leads to more unscientific drivel ,backed up by quotes from the bible[ a book of dubious origin]full of stories to frighten children into the belief system, and the whole thing goes on and on without end , but at end of the day its the believers right to believe , its a short life we have, waste it as you please it wont impact atheists one iota, and please stop knocking on our doors were fine we don't need saving.

I am an Atheist and do not feel the need for advertisements to affirm that we exist unlike the the church seems to have to do in many ways nowadays.

All you need to do is walk or drive past your local church and the are posters and signs trying to entice you in, it is quite sad in many ways considering the power the church once had over our lives that they find the need to advertise for people to attend church in some form or other.

Why is it a waste of money? It's all from private donations. People thinking 'Yes, I'd pay 5 quid for that to get a message out'. It's their money, to do with as they like. And in terms of getting the message out, it's been a smashing success: no ad has appeared yet, and it's (almost) headline news. As the Times put it, it's a marketeer's wet dream...

I see it exactly as you have put it.

If they gave money for that purpose it was there choice, and it is no one elses business to comment on it being a waste of money.

I am in no position to say a collection box for the church roof fund is a waste of money, but I do have the option of not donating.

Well, I for one will try to ensure they're kept separate. Dan is right, the original thread did drift a lot, but then the religious threads usually do because it's a vast subject and it interests a lot of people (for a lot of different reasons, of course).

Re: Atheist ads on London buses

I do think another option on the pol should be "I don't care".

Although these slogans do sometimes brighten up the bus, & sometimes bring a smile, this one is just plain pants.

If the ad said "God probably doesn't exist, but if he did, he would drink carlsberg"..........OK.......... Its simply designed to get people talking about the subject, & in that respect, its done its job.

You obviously feel strongly about the subject. as do many feel strongly about the subject of God.
The only thing the subjects really do is cause arguments. as can be seen from the God threads we have at the moment, and the new UFO one.

"Affirming Atheism", what an odd way to put it. As Joan Bakewell said, a christian think tank has donated money just because they think its a good idea. Thats pretty much it, some people think it will has a positive cultural impact.

Personally, I make a point of not giving to religion based charities. The salvation army is one I avoid (the cue is in the name). I think it's a mistake to think that the money raised by this campaign would otherwise have gone to charity. It's one of those things that come along, and you decide to contribute to.

Absolutely right Maggy. The Sally Army do a hell of a lot of "Unrecognized, & behind the scenes work" for their cause. In all my years, I have never ever had one even broach the subject of God. Had plenty of cuppas & days recruiting (Forces) with them too. Children's hospitals & especially hospice`s are very deserving of charity money.

I would much prefer to see buses advertise for them.

Although the reference to this maniac is not relevant to the title of this thread, it is very relevant to the subject of God. This boy wiped out millions of people for his beliefs.

Old Adolf was Christian, who felt it was his calling to pursue his beliefs. He was raised a Catholic & taught in a Monastery. We all know what he achieved.

"My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter,
As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people". Mein Kampf.

To the best of my knowledge, he didn't advertise on buses.

Given the very obvious differences between the philosophy of Jesus Christ and Adolf Hitler, I doubt many people would seriously claim he was 'a Christian'. Willing to use aspects of Christian teaching to justify his own beliefs, perhaps, but he was a million miles from orthodoxy.

Mind you, it is equally fair to say that he wasn't an atheist (although a number of his henchmen apparently were).

I don't believe any of them advertised on buses either.

Many people who openly declare their belief in God, go on to commit Murder.

Many people who deny God, go on to commit Murder.

Hitlers cronies were of all faiths, even Jews, there were also Atheists ordering killings. I think my point is, the only thing you need to be, to murder someone, is to be a murderer.

Faith doesn't have to come into it.

That said, I think the "Hitler" bit should now end, & get back to the thread.

Just amazed at how militant some of you are.I've never felt threatened by religion in my life...or those of a religious persuasion so I'd save my money for something a lot more tangible than an advertising campaign that most fellow atheists won't even notice nor care about.

But then it's not aimed at them is it?;)

I'm going to be staying out of the rest of this thread except for moderation purposes.

Unless the Salvation Army would be willing to show the poster instead of the buses.

If you are refering to the advert, I would say the advert promotes atheists to think about something that is not a consideration in their everyday life.

Atheism is a term used to describe people who believe there is no god, and like the term Christian it covers a wide flavour of views. Many religious people believe atheists are complete non believers, not very good people and go around denouncing christ / god.

That veiw is about as accurate as those non believers who beleive all Christians are bible bashing sandal wearing loonies.

The term Atheist is unfortunately used to include those of us who beleive that the bible may be a very innacurate publication, based on disorted reports.

The term Atheist should be considered a derogatory term because it's use implies that god is fact and the Atheist is a non believer in fact.

Back to the advert, I believe they will make people give a thought about the whole subject, in fact it may even make some who never give it a thought take an interest in religion and possibly gain some much needed new members at church.

I am safe to post such things at this time on a Sunday.;)

Atheist

atheism noun the belief that there is no god. atheist noun. atheistic or atheistical adj. atheistically adverb. Compare agnosticism under agnostic, theism, deism.
ETYMOLOGY: 16c: from Greek atheos godless.

theism noun the belief in the existence of God or a god, especially one revealed supernaturally to humans. Compare deism, agnosticism under agnostic, atheism. theist noun. theistic adj.
ETYMOLOGY: 17c: from Greek theos god.

so how is the word atheist a derogatory term?

I have NEVER been penalised by anyone for my beliefs or lack of them.

Excellent post sir.

I find it hard sometimes to understand why when i say i don't believe in the Bible or an all powerful god  i am automatically seen as a bad person who should be converted to the good book . I believe what i believe and at this time in my life i have not done time in jail or been in constant contact with the police or robbed some old ladies and i certainly don't worship the devil :D.

However I do like a bit of gratuitous violence in Cod4 at a night time at NTHWGaming.co.uk . maybe that's what not believing in a story book does to you.

It most certainly was. Not only was it a direct response to a point made by a moderator, it was also a comment on the sort of people who might take this kind of advertising personally. I've often found that bad christians have a tendency to always play the victims, so much so that it borders on outright paranoia. One guy I know goes ballistic every year when people send him cards with the word Xmas, because he thinks that spelling it with an X is an attack on his "faith". I'm quite sure he would take up arms to prevent an ad like this appearing on the side of a bus.

I have NEVER been penalised by anyone for my beliefs or lack of them.

The wide use of the term is derogatory, because the term is somewhat black or white.

The term was obviously derived by religious believers who have tarred everyone with the same brush. How can someone who has an open view and are willing to make their mind up based on true facts, if and when 'proof' is povided be considered an Atheist or non-believer.

I could for example come out with a statement saying that I believe we were created by a god, but consider the bible to be a load of inaacurate rubbish.

How would I then be described, Atheist, Christian, Believer, non Believer ?

I wouldn't want you to turn a blind eye (or the other cheek) to rampant off-topicness, but as I explained, it was perfectly relevant to the subject at hand, particularly as relates to how certain people might react to this kind of advertising, which I thought was made very clear even in my first post. Let's leave it at that.

I voted yes, it gives a voice to atheists. This is not a particularly solid "yes" as I have ambivalent feelings about it but I won't post anymore as it would probably be deemed off topic. On balance in the current climate, I think it weighs in favour of yes, just. Even if I did disagree with it I'd vote yes, for other reasons.

Still waiting for someone to explain how this advert is needlessly offensive or antagonising as i really don't understand how anyone can feel that way about it. If you have a thread about a poll to do with religion sorry but you had to realise it was going to blossom out as anything to do with religion on this forum does. If you thought it could be kept purely to a discussion about the poll you were being very optimistic.

Advert no advert makes no odds to me and won't alter the views i hold and won't even enforce them as they are my personal views for personal reasons despite the general tag (atheist) i am an individual with individual reasons for my beliefs and views.

The OP asked for our views on the advert / message, God probably doesn't exist. You cannot answer that question without explaining your reasons why. This did not start off as a poll. We were asked for our views. If you restrict that, your effectively stopping people from commenting.

Quite, and I'm very much interested in why people voted as they did (Or why the ads would be deemed offensive). Otherwise there wouldn't be much point to the thread. What I would consider off-topic is the way the other thread went, discussing whether Hell exists or not, and whether God is evil or not.

What I do ask is that people remain civil. By all means discuss the topic at hand, but there is no reason to dismiss what people believe in as rubbish. So please, think before you post, and if you can't post in a respectful manner, then please don't.

Oh, Hitler's and his henchmen's spiritual outlook on life doesn't have much relevance to ads on a bus imo.

Oh, I'm also interested in the rather large, 'yes for other reasons' vote. Anyone? :)

I am a Christian and would prefer the ads weren't coming however from what I've seen of what's intended they are not offensive so they should be allowed. If I want the freedom to evangelise non-Christians then in our society others need a similar right. Some controls are needed but generally stating you beliefs should always be allowed.

(There is a difference in stating what you believe (there is/isn't a God) and/or advertising an event (Alpha) and something that simply attacks someone else. Maybe a more concrete example is along the lines of "<deity> is the answer" vs "<other deity> is crazy" sort of difference. The former is OK the latter much less so.)

Re: Atheist ads on London buses

I voted - No, for other reasons.

And no I am not religious in any way.

I understand the point they are trying to make - as many religions seem to believe they have the god given right (teehee) to push (push might be a little too strong a word) their views on others - so this is a way for a normally silent section of the community (atheists) to show their views. I also believe that the atheists views should be treated with EXACTLY the same way that religious views are. (sadly that seems to be to not mention it or people get funny)

But to the point of why I voted NO - I don't really want to see atheist views - but I also don't want to see any religious peoples views either. Everyone keep it to yourselves and leave people to their own lives. I feel that these situations were people want what others have (such as lands) or want to force their beliefs / ideals / morals on others to be the cause of so many problems in this world.

Just leave me alone to make my own choices if I want to know about your religion / morals / beliefs etc I WILL ASK! :)

Yes I mentioned that Atheists should have the same voice. I also said I would rather none of them have a public voice (that is atheists, religions, extremists, fanatics etc etc) so people can chose themselves whether they would like to learn about them.

There seems to be way to much 'I'm right, your wrong' attitude these days (especially with reference to religious extremists). How about I'm happy you choosing to believe what you would like but only talk to me about it IF I choose to ask you. And I would also like you to be happy with me choosing what I want to believe (if anything). Isn't that fair that we both then have our own opinions.

PS. I'm not saying 'you' to mean anyone personally on here - its more 'you' as in the groups of people with beliefs etc - anyone really.

That is a life without moral parameters; in which fathers walk away from their children because the state provides all welfare; in which relationships are casual, and a variety boyfriends and serial stepfathers move in; in which mothers spend the day smoking dope, drinking vodka and cruising for sex on the internet, while their children die with broken backs -- among filth and excrement, dead mice and pet snakes.
The implication clearly is that this would not happen in a life life with 'moral parameters set out by the 10 commandments'. Coupled with a photo of Baby P. for good measure. Nice stuff

Mary Kenny in the article

Quote:

I've never yet met an atheist with a sense of joie-de-vivre (unless, in the case of one well-known public atheist, a certain drunken cordiality) most of them seem to be miserable blighters. Read GK Chesterton's great poem 'The Ballad of the Sad Athiest'. It perfectly describes this kind of dreary and austere puritan.
Not really an off day. A month earlier in the guardian she said almost exactly the same.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...heism-religion

Quote:

Far from relaxing and enjoying life, most atheists I have encountered are gloomy blighters with a depressing and nihilistic message that there is no purpose to life so where's the point of anything? They so often fall into the category defined by GK Chesterton: "Those that do not have the faith/Will not have the fun." You only have to attend one of their dreary humanist funerals to see that – I am never going to another of those, just to be made miserable.
Anyway in that independent article there is a lot of ranty stuff. Maybe she only hangs around with the same sorts of people and has a very small circle of acquaintances?
