How many mbs per second should 10mb broad band download?
 

I know it depends. But trying to download a file with 10mb broadband is about 1 meg per second, is that right?

10mb internet will mean you download a 1MB file in 1 second.

Speeds via gamefiles.virginmedia.com should be approx.

i.e : 250kBps X 8 = 2MB, 500kBps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kBps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kBps X 8 = 20MB

You generally should see about 1.15MB/s - 1.20MB/s tops.

I suggest you need to be more careful with the symbols relating to the multipliers, e.g.
250kbps x 8 = 2Mb = 0.25MB
250kBps x 8 = 2MB
where b represents bits and B represents bytes

Yer but you'll never actually see that speed when downloading due to overheads on the connection.

1.20MB/s is about right, as a rule of thumb each Mbit is worth 120kB in real world download, if you get a little more that's a bonus.

Would be nice TO get a 10meg service!!!!! I get around 6, and according to Virgin THAT IS the 10meg service!!!

I know you can never get the full 10meg, but I would have though you would be able to get around 8 at the very least...

I pay for 10 I want 10 NOT 6!!! Anyone else find this?

I think it also depends on which sites/servers are serving you, they will throttle their connections etc also. A quick test is to open multiple sites at the same time and do multiple downloads, that will test your overall throughput through the network to your PC. It's all much of a muchness. Also any download from the local Virgin network is likely to be quicker I'm sure, again depending on link speeds.

The Max I have seen is 3.2MB using gamefiles.

and downloading 10 files at once.

Pretty poor then for a 20Mb connection, unless you really mean that you are getting 3.2MB/s! :)

I get a constant 10MB service at all times.. well, around 9.8

By running this speed test and I managed to get 10 files open, and added their transfer rates together.

My connection here in Knowsley is Rock Solid.

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Remember to stop and delete the files.

Misreported. If it's not a large enough download you get some prefetch effect.

Download http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/ 100MB version, it'll likely settle around 2.4MB/s.

Also misreported, likely reporting partly cached speeds or average speed across transfer, try it again and have something like Netmeter running. It'll show you throughput more accurately and it won't break, or even reach probably, 20Mbit.

Regardless of how solid or otherwise your connection is the nasty CMTS won't let you break 20Mbit however many downloads you have running, it shapes on IP level not TCP level so number of connections irrelevant, and as people STM'd can attest to its' rate limiting is quite accurate. :)

Roll on next year and my move, see how many connections it takes to hit the 14.4MB/s my connection should reach.

You may have misunderstood what i was saying. I meant i get 2.6MB/s on my 20meg connection NOT a 20meg download.

I regularly download posts from usenet in-excess of 10gb in 50-100meg chunks so i don't think your assumption is correct.
I measure the throughput on a dedicated piece of software (mac) on my machine.

Look at the image below, this is a screen grab. Ignore the Speedtest.net bit as i was just using this to show how badly some sites report speeds.
Look ion the top right corner and you will see the throughput speed from the downloads. There was nothing else running at the time, there was no additional network traffic - just the download.

On my 10MB connection, I can get 1.2MB/s at maximum when it's decent. But during the evenings and weekends, I struggle to get near 3MB.

It wasn't an assumption just a statement of fact sir. Even assuming no overheads or other inefficiency at all you won't get above 2.56MB/s from a 20480000 bit/s connection.

20.48Mbit/s / 8 = 2.56Mbyte/s maximum IP throughput.

Not sure if giving a DVD rip of a movie is a wise choice of an example either :D

Well I've years of standards, the SCTE, the ITU and whomever else behind me so whatever really. If you've a connection that both breaks the cable standards and mathematics than I applaud you :)

Lots of people find that. It's just the way it is. They can get away with it because they advertise it as "up to". As far as I know, all ISP's do the same thing.

That should be Mbit by the way not MB. MB is megabyte and they are big. A 10MB connection would be insanely fast :)
