If they are the same thing how come they do not look alike, apart from being black, the original one in the small picture appears to have a white band around it and no shapes on the top.

200 people in Dudley supposedly picked for this trial via a email and the click of a link on the internet, which gets them a nice shiny modem as above.

Allegedly this is the email below.

Hello XXXXXX

If you haven’t heard already, XXL broadband is on its way… it’s ultra fast, has download speeds of up to 50Mb, and we’d like you to be among the first to try it out for us, at no extra cost!

Why have we picked Dudley?
When we started looking into where in the UK we could test out our brand new up to 50Mb broadband service we noticed that lots of customers in the Dudley area already had our L or XL broadband, so thought you’d be the perfect people to talk to about our new, even faster service. We’re really excited about the launch of XXL broadband, and before we offer it to all of our customers we’d love to know what you think of it.

How to get involved
We’re offering you a sneak preview of our XXL broadband, which starts in a few weeks, and we’re looking for 200 homes to try it out. Plus, experiencing the fastest broadband in the business won’t cost you a penny extra – we’ll charge you no more for our ultra fast XXL broadband than we currently do for your existing broadband service.

Interested? We’ve already got your details, so just click below to sign up. We’ll also send you a shiny new modem that’s built to handle our new super-speedy XXL service absolutely free. And, once it’s over, you can keep the modem for free and use it with your new XXL service, or your existing one.

Hurry - sign up closes on 21st October 2008

What happens next
If you’d like to join in, and think that you’ll be able to take some time to tell us what you think of the service then we’d like to hear from you. Being part of this sneak preview is your chance to influence the services we provide and really have your say, so for the first few weeks, we’ll be asking you to answer some short online questionnaires for us.

The Virgin Media team

Well it is the 50mb trial modem but it will not be the one that will be finally released to everyone.

Er yes it will. The funky one IS the final modem for the 50Mb launch.

As I said before the Dudley trial is with the final hardware. This includes the customer equipment

Well what did they expect using the cheapest tackiest ambit? ;):D

The motorola ones play very nice though ;)

BenMcr 18-10-2008 08:30

Re: Guess what this is.

Why would Virgin spend time and money getting Ambit to customise a modem if they weren't going to use it?

As for it being a brick, it is a different physical modem to the ones used for the trials in Kent and as far as I know hasn't been deployed outside Virgin itself

are we assuming the alternative modem can support upstream channel bonding either out of the box or in the future ?

Maybe, but new motorolas are being used in new trials (select areas)

Prefer them over the ambit regardless.

I know...it's not as nice as the ambit one...but at least it supports upstream bonding ;)

Bonded Downstream and Upstream as standard and futureproof IPv6 compatible as well.

Yep, wonder how they'll look after the redesign though...all that money wasted though...told them from the start not to use ambit

Better and easier to use of the shelf modems as before rather than mess around with custom jobs.

Normally i would agree, but they knew from the beginning how crap the ambits were and that they wouldnt play well...

Just a big waste of money imo.
