Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

Hi,

I've just set up my new Virgin Media wireless gear - their modem and netgear router. I've had no problems setting up the router and wireless connection, according Control Panel->Network Connections - it tells me I'm connected at full strength. I tried renaming the network and setting a new password - am again told I'm connected at full strength.

But... Internet Explorer doesn't seem to agree! Just get page not found. Any ideas?

Thanks!!
W

A couple of things to try.

1 - Disable LAN connection so you only have the wireless connection.
2 - Reboot.

:)

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

Thanks. When you say disable the LAN connection - do you simply mean unplug, or disable a setting somewhere? I've tried the first option a few times - but will try again now as a sanity check! :-)

Control Panel->Network Connections

Right click and disable the cable connection one.

No joy with disabling LAN connection and rebooting everything. And I'm working online.

Thanks though.

When you go into a command prompt, Can you ping an external site? e.g. bbc.co.uk

When you type in ipconfig/all what is your ip address?

wirelessless 13-10-2008 21:58

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

Nope, can't ping anything, can't connect to VPN either.

ipconfig/all give my IP address as 192.168.0.111

dev 13-10-2008 22:16

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

try pinging 212.58.224.131, then a tracert to it if it wont ping.

if it pings then it's a dns problem, what does ipconfig /all list as the dns servers?

wirelessless 13-10-2008 22:21

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

Thanks.

Nope, can't ping it and a tracert times out. The DNS servers are 192.168.0.1 and .0.2.

dev 13-10-2008 22:27

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

were those the dns servers given out via the router or did you set those manually?

paste the output of 'nslookup www.bbc.co.uk', i expect those dns server ips are wrong, the ones for ex-ntl are 194.168.4.100 + 194.168.8.100 so you could try those instead.

wirelessless 13-10-2008 22:34

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

No, I didn't set them manually - the router settings are to get them automatically. The results are:

>nslookup www.bbc.co.uk
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Timed out
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.2: Timed out
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to UnKnown timed-out

So looks like you're right? I'll try setting them manually...

What's the second one? The ones you gave are both the same. Thanks!

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

isn't 192.168.0.1 the router?
check settings in router.

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

Urr, I'm getting confused now. I'm connecting to the router with 192.168.1.1 right enough... I'll go through all this again tomorrow and make sure to reboot everything in between. Thanks for all the help in the meantime.

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

UNINSTALL ALL VIRGIN SOFTWARE

First you need to fully uninstall the software from your computer, by first going to the system tray by the clock on desktop and exiting the wireless manager, then go to start > control panel >unistall programs> now unistall the wireless manager from here then exit .

Next ensure the router is on and take a pen or a paperclip and look on the back of the router and you will see a small round hole big enough for the pen to go into press the reset button in this hole for approx 10 seconds then switch off the router and modem, reinsert the disk and follow the instructions to the letter.

Ensure that you actually have the wireless switched on on your computer, do not assume it is on, the should be a switch.

-----------------------------------------------

Quick router set up

connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page.

disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon ( not the virgin icon ) click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected.

------------------------------------------------------------
YOU CAN ALSO TRY THIS WAY AFTER REMOVING THE SOFTWARE AS ABOVE

------------------------------------------------------------------

You don't need the cd to set up VM routers, nor do you need a temporary cable connection.

1. Connect to wireless network. The network will be called "Virgin Broadband" the passphrase (WPA key) is preinstall.

2. Open a web browser. You will be presented with a setup page. Enter a new network name and password, ignore everything else, click apply. You will be prompted for a username and password - ignore it and close the browser.

3. Connect to the wireless network using you new network name and passphrase.

4. Happy surfing.

It is actually quicker than running the cd.

i had this issue the other day with a netgear router where the pc was connected to the network and would ping but IE didnt work. I just assigned the DNS to opendns on the router and it solved the problem. that was a talktalk line so im not sure if its a different issue. God i hate ADSL :)

Sounds like your router doesnt have an internet connection. Reset the modem and the router, start the modem wait for the ready light to become solid then turn the router on.

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

Thanks, but that doesn't work. Using the second option, setting up without the VirginMedia software, step 2 just gives me a can't connect message in IE. If I then plug in via LAN, I get the set up pate you mention. I give it a new name and password, and it exits automatically. When I unplug and open up IE again, I get the same old can't display message. If I plug in a LAN cable again and type in the IP address of the router, it asks for a username and password that I don't know.

Arghh!!!!

Thanks for trying to help everyone.

---------- Post added at 18:59 ---------- Previous post was at 18:58 ----------

Oh. That's right. Username is virgin, password is password. Still dont know what to do next - been here before.

Okay, so you're connecting but no data is being transferred. That sounds like electronical interference to me, with 90+% packet loss.

Switch the wireless channel to 1, 6, or 11 and see which is more stable.

The Default on our router is channel 6 but damn good advice.;)

If that did not work and I know it should then you need to call Tech Support for help.

Thanks. Virgin told me i need to call their PC guys, which will probably cost a fortune. Thanks for all the tips everyone.

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

I'll bet if you try

Code:

ipconfig /renew
you will get 'no adapter is in a permissable state...'

Your IP address should be 192.168.1.x NOT 192.168.0.x

You either have a fixed IP or you're connected to someone else's router.

If you get the above message then go to the control panel click switch to classic view if in cayegory view - open network connections right click the wireless connection click properties select internet protocol tcp/ip click porperties and set obtain an ip adress automatically and obtain dns servers automatically.

Unless of course you are using Vista.

wirelessless 26-10-2008 18:48

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree

Woo Hooooooo! Thanks Joxer, you're a star! I did get the permissable state error message and I made the changes to tcp/ip properties that you recommended, and here I am, sat on my couch, all wireless and happy. Will have to change my username now... :-)

THANKS.
