Buying a new tower computer

Can anyone recommend a brand or processor plus operating system etc, as I will need to purchase a new computer soon.

I don't play games apart from perhaps Yahoo Pool, but I use mp3's and use it mainly for music and such like.

I am slightly afraid that Vista will put too many obstacles in my way, lol

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Re: Buying a new tower computer

Ok I just costed out on ocuk a

Quad core cpu
Asus mobo
2 gig ram
500 gig hdd
Dual layer dvd rw
basic case
Gigabyte 460 watt psu
8600 GT gfx
OEM Home premium

All for less than £450 quid delivered. And OCUK is not the cheapest place to shop.
No I am sure you could find someone local to knock it up? I often do just builds for not a huge fee as I am not greedy I just enjoy doing it. This should give you an idea of what you can get for the top end of your budget

Having a gfx even if not gaming removes a possible bottleneck. You could save 25/30 quid on an even cheaper one (which woudl come close to getting someone like me to build it ;))

If you went AMD dual core you can knock 50-70 quid at least off the price.

BTW can be built with XP instead

If you;re upto it then but seperates on eBay from HK or USA, might take time to come in but in the end you;ll pay 20% less than UK pre-built prices and possibly for a better spec..

Re: Buying a new tower computer

what if you get caught with import duty? and then there is warranty? I certainly would not under any circumstances recommend that ;)

Hi, what about this http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-0126.aspx I know its a dell but perfect for you I think although it has Vista, this is the same but with a 19" screen http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.901-2518.aspx in budget, cheaper than buying from dell directly and you get clubcard points lol, also if you search around you will find money off voucher codes to.

Purely for the hell of it, I just worked out what the current parts in my system have cost me over the years [some bits I've had a while, some bits are brand new] & got a bit of a surprise. I estimate about ~£997 [not including the various seperate delivery charges, or monitors, keyboard, etc]. Anyone thinking of gettting in to self-builds should be warned: Yes, it can be cheaper, but as you learn more you can find yourself wanting the better parts, & justifying their cost when you're only buying 1 thing [or a few] at a time, which can end up costing you more in the long run. :disturbd:

"sell a machine"? Vot are zees strange vords you speak? ;) Seriously though, I think I'd have trouble parting with my computer bits; I never know when I might need them [in case something fails, etc]. There's also the fact that whilst I can put systems together, I'm absolutely hopeless as a salesman. Whataver that je ne c'est quois is that some people have that enables them to persuade other people to pay for their services or buy from them, I just don't have it. :(

I know exactly what you mean, infact i've still got a 12gb hdd i pulled from something around somewhere :Yikes:

I did throw a few bigger bits out (Mainly parts for cases i no longer have) but i've still got some surplus parts kicking about.

Oh, I can beat that. :D
1 286 laptop
3 AT cases
3 ATX cases
a few sub-GB HDDs [not sure how many still work]
4 graphics cards [1 PCI Voodoo 3, 3 AGP Radeons]
~8 or 9 mobos [3 or 4 486, 1 Super7 (K6-2), 1 P2 (Celery 233), 2 socket A/462, 1 AM2] [none of that currently in use]
& that's just what I can think of off the top of my head, there's more than that though. :disturbd:
