Reading CD's/DVD's slows down my computer!

Hey all

Anyone ever experienced this problem?

I'm reinstalling Pro Evo 2008 on my PC right now, and whilst its installing from the DVD, my PC is running REALLY slowly, yet I have a 2.6ghz Intel Core 2 Quad overclocked to 3ghz with 4gb of RAM.

Any clues on how to fix this? I dont understand it at all, seriously, even moving the mouse goes jerky when the PC is reading from the DVD Drive.

I have a Samsung Writemaster DVD Drive and am running XP SP3, the DVD drive is connected to my mobo via IDE.

Hope you can help

Check you have the latest drivers for your motherboard chipset.

Do you have DVD and HDD on the same IDE cable?

I'm pretty sure I have the latest drivers.

I'm using a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R mobo, where can I check for updates to the chipset? :) thanks in advance mate.

*nevermind I just found it on the Gigabyte website, downloading now and will install shortly*

Nope, the IDE cable is solely for the DVD drive, the DVD drive is set to Master on the back :)

One other thing, I've checked all the IDE Channels (Primary and Secondary) and they are all set to use DMA and not PIO :)

How much memory do you have, and how much memory does the program take while it's installing?

4gb of RAM mate, not too sure how much memory PES takes, but I'm sure its nowhere near as much as the 4gb I have.

It is writting to the disk as well as reading from the cd/dvd so I imagine its your seek times thats stretched

Going kinda offtpoic here i have my dvd drive and hdd on same ide cable will i see a performance boost if i got another ide cable and put hdd on one and dvd on the other ie burning or something like that.

Btw dma and PIO enyone explain the differnce always liking to learn new stuff

If your hard drive is on the same channel as the optical the hard drive is limited by the optical to ultra dma 33 so yes

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device...e/IDE-DMA.mspx little background on DMA and PIO but PIO is slower thats simple enough

My current DVD-RW is a bit dodgy and when it reads/writes sometimes it hangs and slows/hangs the entire system :( Could be a similar thing though.

off topic but if your running XP you dont need anymore than 3GB unless its a 64bit system

yeah but a matched pair of 2 gig sticks is better than 4x 1 gig sticks or populating 4 slots on pretty much any mobo ;)

Hi guys

I have 2 x 2gb RAM sticks.

Still not found a solution for this issue, I've only had this DVD Drive for a short space of time, and I thought it was a pretty decent make?

It's a Samsung SH-S202J 20X DVD±RW /DL/RAM IDE Int Black Bare Drive - OEM drive... :(

I've had a few problems in the past with dvd drives if it refuses to read the disc properly it will stutter and lag your machine out, if it does it with a lot of discs - try returning it, if it does it just with that software/make of disc not a lot you can do apart from trying to update the firmware on the drive (but as you have not had it long will invalidate your warranty).

Hi, is your IDE cable for the DVD drive able to run 2 drives and does the cable go near any or lay across any power cables as power cables can cause problems i.e crosstalk?
