Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
more details here
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7593106.stm The browser is designed to be lightweight and fast, and to cope with the next generation of web applications that rely on graphics and multimedia. and it will arrive today according to sources, the name of the browser is "Google Chrome" odd name lol |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
All I hope is that it does a proper job of interpreting HTML and other code, unlike certain default browsers I could mention. It's a real pain in the rear trying to design websites when each browser does different things with it.
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Some more info is appearing, including a google comic about it!
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/...n-browser.html A Google comic (yes a comic) about it http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/ http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2008-09-01-n47.html EDIT: Having looked through the comic, it's quite informative, and Chrome has some great features, they're even allowing their anti phishing/spyware/malware api available to everyone. |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Exciting stuff. I wonder whether the Google brand name will tempt some of the people who haven't bothered to try anything other than IE yet?
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Looks like this is developed for Windows only, at the moment - mac and linux users will have to wait a little while yet.
Wonder if it will support some of the plugins that only run under Internet Explorer. Some of the sites I have to use for work just will not run under Firefox. |

You're right, they've developed a Windoze version first, which seems like a reasonable approach. I don't imagine we'll have an excessively long wait for their *nix versions to appear though. |

I wonder whether Chrome is going to allow the same sort of customization? Has anyone read all of the cartoon at http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/ by the way? It's quite long but very informative. I'm not an IT person but I learned a lot about the way a browser is built and operates, and how Chrome sets out to be different. |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
The comic was good! Makes me excited about the release tomorrow (shame about the longer wait for the Mac Version). It seems to be fundamentally different and more powerful.
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Very good news ...
I hope it will much better than others |

Will try this out and see what it is like, it can't be any worse than IE and with each tab being a seperate process then when a tab crashes the browser won't. The problem with browswer is they all work quick out of the box but you have to bloat them with javascript, flash, etc etc just to get pages to display properly |

it looks good "on paper", but it'll need adblockplus for me to be interested
|

I haven't used CC for a while but I don't recall it being easy, if at all possible, to direct it only to remove certain parts of your cookie store, history and cache. |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Quote:
so it is a good thing, if we wanted to delete a specific cookie we would be able to much easier via the browser? |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
It basically just removes a session you have pre-selected to be private, So if you are doing private browsing (looking up credit stuff, banking, medical information) it will remove all traces of that browsing at the end...
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
yet more hype for something that doesn't appear to do much different, no doubt there will be a bunch of people to believe it's the best thing since sliced bread seeing as it's from google and will use it without knowing anything about it

re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
i think we know enough about it lol, i don't want to know a lot about it because i want to explore it when it comes out if you understand..
i like how clean it looks to other browsers, looks simple and easy and with it being light weight it shouldn't use much ram memory |

Will it be more secure than Firefox? That's all I want to know.

re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
What's starting to annoy me are the individuals on other forums I frequent saying things like "ah yes I've already had a sneak preview of this but I'm not allowed to show you or talk about it" which translated means "I have no techie knowledge at all but you guys seem to and that makes me feel quite inadequate so in order to try and BS some credability I'll pretend I've used this new browser and BS a reason why I can't back it up with any proof".

re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
It seems this browser is taking a different approach in terms architecture and systems integration. I.e. each tab will have its own process.
IMO - I can’t see this browser been that efficient on lower specced computers. In addition, having individual processes for each tab may cause your whole system to slow down. - Especially if you had more than one tab processing an intensive web app. Only time will tell I guess. But I think it will be horses for courses type review when comparing it to other internet browsers. |

separate processes for each tab - granted thats 'new' but seems a poor fix at something that shouldn't be a problem, i've seen a whole host of problems with flash + opera on linux, none of which killed the browser better js handling would be the JIT compiler for it? again that's being worked on with other browsers and isn't really specific to google's browser, will be interesting to see if all JS on a page is compiled which for small JS would be pointless. JS performance on large scale apps doesn't interest me one bit, i tend to use programs what they were designed for, email clients for writing emails, office apps for writing documents not a *web* browser i would have expected more than 3 things if the browser was completely different :p: |

Seeing as their Engineering Director is Linus Upson, I'm most disappointed that a Linux version lags behind the Windows release. ;)
The comic makes such a big deal about it being open source as well... |

It better be much better than the rest as otherwise I see no reason to leave Firefox, and all it's excellent plugin's.
CCleaner let's you have an exception list where you choose which cookies are left untouched when you run the cleaner. If you wish you can set Firefox to clear all private data when you quit. |

Just came on to say same - also downloading - can't wait to see it :)
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Is it me, or does anybody else have a problem scrolling up on web pages ?
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
I seriously do not like how it handles bookmarks
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
woooo im using it, so clean and simple im gonna have a test about
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Very impressed so far, got off to a strange start where it wouldn't get passed the import wizard but I'm through that now... well it IS a beta :)
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
My first impression is not impressed. The bookmarks bar makes no sense it just shows you a few alphabetically which is no use as all the ones it shows I hardly ever view. You seriously would have thought it would have the google toolbar which it does not appear to at first look.If it had an odour it would smell bad
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Oh my god, this if fast as hell.
Loving it so far, now to delve into this bookmarks thingy... Also, having no problems scrolling up Jelly |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
I'm liking the look of it and speed so far.

the only thing i dont like is that there is no toolbar thing where it shows file and edit
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
I hate it when they do that, no download link if you're viewing the page from a non-Windows OS. I'll have to reboot into XP to download it.
OK, I'd have to install it in XP, but I could be downloading it now & install it later at my leisure... |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Where's the reload option from the right click menu? Seems odd it's gone walkies...

Clicked accept and install on the gears.google page and it's just stuck there.
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Ah found a little niggle, normally if I press my middle mouse button in and move the mouse in any direction its scrolls that way but not with Chrome at the moment
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Had to come back into FF as I can't find the last post in this thread.
The browser is very fast. Going to find my feet later. |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Well it works with zoomtext which is nice, but I don't find it any quicker than firefox. I'll see how I get on over the next couple of days I think :)
|

I said Right click menu, right click on a page... You get Back, Forward but not much else really. |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
I'm using it now. It seems a lot faster than FF3. This has a nice Linux feel to it.
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
my mistake facebook is FLYYYYYING! and this site flies too!
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Its just given me a 100% cpu and had to close via task manager, also i went to a siter that needed a plugin for a video and that wouldn't work. To me it's no quicker than Firefox 3 which flies along on both my computers.
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
OK it needs a File menu. It needs a a google toolbar, It needs a separate bookmarks button and scrap the bookmarks toolbar as its a waste of time. If it sorts these then yes it will be good
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
Well, i've even restarted my laptop incase i had another bug, but I still can't scroll up on any websites.
Proper doing my head in :( |
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
i like what is does when it blocks a pop up
|
re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome
