Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome

more details here

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7593106.stm

The browser is designed to be lightweight and fast, and to cope with the next generation of web applications that rely on graphics and multimedia.

and it will arrive today according to sources, the name of the browser is "Google Chrome" odd name lol

All I hope is that it does a proper job of interpreting HTML and other code, unlike certain default browsers I could mention. It's a real pain in the rear trying to design websites when each browser does different things with it.

Some more info is appearing, including a google comic about it!

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/...n-browser.html

A Google comic (yes a comic) about it http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/

http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2008-09-01-n47.html

EDIT: Having looked through the comic, it's quite informative, and Chrome has some great features, they're even allowing their anti phishing/spyware/malware api available to everyone.

Exciting stuff. I wonder whether the Google brand name will tempt some of the people who haven't bothered to try anything other than IE yet?

Looks like this is developed for Windows only, at the moment - mac and linux users will have to wait a little while yet.

Wonder if it will support some of the plugins that only run under Internet Explorer. Some of the sites I have to use for work just will not run under Firefox.

AFAIK that sort of consideration usually comes down to licencing. Maybe Mozilla can't afford (or chooses not to spend money on) licencing certain MS plugins (presumably you're thinking about Activex?). Google, on the other hand, practically has a licence to print money, so acquiring licences to use plugins shouldn't be a problem, should they choose to do that.

You're right, they've developed a Windoze version first, which seems like a reasonable approach. I don't imagine we'll have an excessively long wait for their *nix versions to appear though.

It should render similar to Safari, it uses it's rendering core (webkit).

Safari is a very nice browser indeed ... the only reason I don't use it is because I like playing with all the many extensions and themes available in Firefox.

I wonder whether Chrome is going to allow the same sort of customization?

Has anyone read all of the cartoon at http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/ by the way? It's quite long but very informative. I'm not an IT person but I learned a lot about the way a browser is built and operates, and how Chrome sets out to be different.

The comic was good! Makes me excited about the release tomorrow (shame about the longer wait for the Mac Version). It seems to be fundamentally different and more powerful.

isn't the release on Tuesday ? I was waiting for everyone to wake up in the US and then hoping we could get it today.

Will try this out and see what it is like, it can't be any worse than IE and with each tab being a seperate process then when a tab crashes the browser won't.

The problem with browswer is they all work quick out of the box but you have to bloat them with javascript, flash, etc etc just to get pages to display properly

There is a private browsing mode, which if selected will not store the locations of the sites you visited in the address bar or history. It will also remove all cookies and the cache once you finished with the tab.

Not pointless at all, firstly because it's built in to the browser so is a lot more accessible than a third-party app, and secondly because it doesn't require any configuration in order to ensure it only deletes very specific aspects of your browsing history, cookies etc.

I haven't used CC for a while but I don't recall it being easy, if at all possible, to direct it only to remove certain parts of your cookie store, history and cache.

oh i didn't know that sorry, i think it just removes everything..

so it is a good thing, if we wanted to delete a specific cookie we would be able to much easier via the browser?

Damien 02-09-2008 15:23

re: Google Launches Internet Browser - Chrome

It basically just removes a session you have pre-selected to be private, So if you are doing private browsing (looking up credit stuff, banking, medical information) it will remove all traces of that browsing at the end...

yet more hype for something that doesn't appear to do much different, no doubt there will be a bunch of people to believe it's the best thing since sliced bread seeing as it's from google and will use it without knowing anything about it

It appears to do a lot different  Have you actually read all the details about the browser?

i think we know enough about it lol, i don't want to know a lot about it because i want to explore it when it comes out if you understand..

i like how clean it looks to other browsers, looks simple and easy and with it being light weight it shouldn't use much ram memory

It seems so due to:

  • Sandboxing - Vista and OSX use this in their operating systems but this one has it at tab level. So if bad code is running in a tab it is confined to the tab and will not be able to do anything outside the tab (like access your data)
  • List of malware and dodgy sites - Which will be used as a warning, like MS and Firefox has but hopefully better
  • Some other stuff they mentioned

Sandboxing and separate processes for each tab? And better JavaScript handling for faster web-apps. some others I have forgotten but this seems a completely different browser, built with internet applications in mind. Like a browser is an OS

Well, Having used it due to my techie skills google just had to consult i can vouch for it's coolness. I'll let you know what's great about it when it's released since I am under a NDA

It seems this browser is taking a different approach in terms architecture and systems integration. I.e. each tab will have its own process.

IMO - I can’t see this browser been that efficient on lower specced computers. In addition, having individual processes for each tab may cause your whole system to slow down. - Especially if you had more than one tab processing an intensive web app.

Only time will tell I guess.

But I think it will be horses for courses type review when comparing it to other internet browsers.

I think it will make it more responsive when dealing with web applications or anything else that requires a plug-in or a ton of javascript. Also preventing the entire browser going down if flash buggers up...

sandboxing isn't new and really shouldn't be required and it sure as hell ain't new and 'different'

separate processes for each tab - granted thats 'new' but seems a poor fix at something that shouldn't be a problem, i've seen a whole host of problems with flash + opera on linux, none of which killed the browser

better js handling would be the JIT compiler for it? again that's being worked on with other browsers and isn't really specific to google's browser, will be interesting to see if all JS on a page is compiled which for small JS would be pointless. JS performance on large scale apps doesn't interest me one bit, i tend to use programs what they were designed for, email clients for writing emails, office apps for writing documents not a *web* browser

i would have expected more than 3 things if the browser was completely different :p:

It better be much better than the rest as otherwise I see no reason to leave Firefox, and all it's excellent plugin's.

CCleaner let's you have an exception list where you choose which cookies are left untouched when you run the cleaner.

If you wish you can set Firefox to clear all private data when you quit.

Hype, perhaps, but the launch is happening right now. There's no reason to think the link won't go up at some point very soon.

My guess is they want it to go live once the press launch is complete, and someone screwed up and pushed the button too soon.

My first impression is not impressed. The bookmarks bar makes no sense it just shows you a few alphabetically which is no use as all the ones it shows I hardly ever view. im confused already why is it showing 2 chromes in windows task manager?

Two processes because you either have A) 2 Tabs, or B) One process holds infor for all other tabs, and you have one tab open.

I hate it when they do that, no download link if you're viewing the page from a non-Windows OS. I'll have to reboot into XP to download it.

OK, I'd have to install it in XP, but I could be downloading it now & install it later at my leisure...

Where's the reload option from the right click menu? Seems odd it's gone walkies...

Uses a web downloader... No direct link. Must be for load balancing ;) The downloader would not work in other operating systems.

Ah found a little niggle, normally if I press my middle mouse button in and move the mouse in any direction its scrolls that way but not with Chrome at the moment

Had to come back into FF as I can't find the last post in this thread.
The browser is very fast. Going to find my feet later.

Well it works with zoomtext which is nice, but I don't find it any quicker than firefox. I'll see how I get on over the next couple of days I think :)

Speed is faster on some heavy sites I visit, and some slower sites I visit too...

I said Right click menu, right click on a page... You get Back, Forward but not much else really.

I'm using it now. It seems a lot faster than FF3. This has a nice Linux feel to it.

Its just given me a 100% cpu and had to close via task manager, also i went to a siter that needed a plugin for a video and that wouldn't work. To me it's no quicker than Firefox 3 which flies along on both my computers.

OK it needs a File menu. It needs a a google toolbar, It needs a separate bookmarks button and scrap the bookmarks toolbar as its a waste of time. If it sorts these then yes it will be good
