Amir Khan signs with sky box office

Amir Khan has signed a multi-fight deal which could take him to a world title on Sky.

His first appearance on Sky Box Office will be on Saturday, September 6, when he fights the undefeated lightweight Breidis Prescott at the MEN Arena in Manchester.

So that's £14.99 for a fight which will probably last a couple of rounds.

Ahh no way, I hope they put a clause in the contract minimum of 3 rounds before a KO, at least we could watch it for free on ITV.

Big mistake methinks - should've stayed on terrestrial TV for a while to boost his public profile. As it is very few people will see him fight now...

There are two reasons, why l won't be watching the Khan fight, firstly it is going to cost £14.99, and the other, his fights normally last about 30 secs, l beleive he has only gone the distance in one fight, so that is too me is a waste of money for the sub, and also, it should be on ITV, where it would have been free, l have never liked Khan, every fight he has, seems to be a tester, and l think most of the boxers, and there must be some powerful boxers out there, are boxers, that are just on the ladder in there career, don't get me wrong, l am a great boxing fan, and seen some great fights, but l am not a great fan of Amir Khan.

 I can't disagree with any of that

I'm a big fan of boxing and I agree, I watch it to see the favourite get beaten to a pulp. I never did like Khan but it doesn't take any of my respect away from him as a boxer.

If you are a great boxing fan you would understand why he hasn't faced any of the 'big' boxers yet. You can't just throw a young boxer with no experiance into big fights, it would be stupid and ruin his career. There would be no good coming out of going for big fights and losing them because of inexperiance, he needs to build confidence and get stronger before he fights for titles.

Prescott, his opponent tomorrow night, is undefeated and is a very good boxer. He has ended other boxers unbeaten records so it will be anything other than a walk in the park for Kahn, who needs more credit then people are giving him for previous fights he has won.

I can see why people are angry with him moving from ITV to Sky because you need to pay to watch him now, but it's a step forward in his career. All the great British boxers moved to Sky such as Lennox Lewis, Prince Nas and Hatton in their careers. He needed to do it to progress his career and get the bigger fights which people have been calling for.

Re: Amir Khan signs with sky box office

I personally have never rated him. When he first stepped into the professional ring he certainly did not look like he had what it takes. Credit where it is due though he has shown he has spirit and a somewhat ok chin . But I always thought he needs a good test. I didnt expect it to be tonight but there you go. He could learn humility from this, train harder and lose the cockiness that the media has given him. Now is his real test does he come back fighting harder and fitter than before or does he lose his confidence

Didn't this happen with Chris Eubank about 13 years ago? Sky Sports signed him to a multi-million pound deal then in his very next match he had his butt handed to him on a plate by Steve Collins.

I think there's a fair few that will say that it was money well spent to see Khan get beaten like that. (Myself for one).

At least he did own up to his mistakes that cost him the fight rather than saying he [Prescott] got lucky, which is something.

Still, what a way to lose though. Those saying it's a rip off to see a 1 round fight on PPV, then imagine how those that paid £30 -£200+ to see it live feel. At least they had the consulation prize of seeing him KO'd but it would have been a whole lot different if he'd won within that same time.

Re: Amir Khan signs with sky box office

This was an accident waiting to happen. Khan has been put down before by very ordinary fighters and didn't learn the appropriate lesson. Let this be a warning to the money men and the like of James Degale who want to be celebrity multimilliionaires before they've put in the really hard graft.

He's been exposed now and since his type rely so much on self-confidence verging on arrogance, I don't think Khan will recover from this.

Murdoch's crew won't be too pleased either of course. :D

the only ones who will be happy with that are $ky ! thay must of made bundles of cash from that fight

Osem 07-09-2008 09:34

Re: Amir Khan signs with sky box office

Won't that be more than offset by the bundles of cash they won't be making from the bigger fights which would've come Khan's way had his glass chin been so brutally exposed? Apparently there were only 8,000 or so fans at the fight and the whole top tier of the arena was curtained off so as to hide all the empty seats. That level of public interest doesn't bode well for Khan or Sky.

You seem put out that he sgned with Sky?

Do you think any boxer fights for their fans? Its a tough sport and they can get damaged early on in their career.

Personally If I was putting myself in that position I would want to guarantee I make as much money as quickly as possible, which is all Amir has done.

Khan wasn't PPV material, well not yet anyway and he's now proven that himself, at least what happened was good for PPV in general for all the wrong reasons.

And as do I really care if they do it for money or for fans is irrelevant, but personally I'd prefer to see his fights free on normal TV, there's nothing more in it. I don't see the point in paying for PPV unless it's a proper fighter or something that you know will be worth it.

So now what's next for Khan, another PPV event? I think I now feel sorry for SKY now more than anything.

Re: Amir Khan signs with sky box office

I certainly wouldn't pay to watch the fight, but I must admit, the minute I did see was worth it.

Khan was dropped by a superb left from Prescot, no doubts whatsoever. Khans chin shook right down to his boots.

Khan talks a good fight, but when the chips are down, talking goes out of the window. Now he must realise he`s been fed on a diet of second stringers all his career. This time, he met a decent opponent, & paid the price.

Better get some padding for his backside, this won`t be the last time he bounces.

Re: Amir Khan signs with sky box office

Khan has a glass jaw, plain and simple. He can't get over that. The only way he can carry on is to learn to defend. His defence at the moment is to attack. His new coach won't be able to help him either as Cuban's are not know for defensive fighting. Maybe if his family hadn't thought a cash cow had been born and had let him have a few more years of amatuer fighting to learn a bit more he might be ok, but now he's faced with everyone knowing he has a chin made of fine china and his career in limbo at 21. Too much belief in their own hype in his camp.

Arthurgray50@blu 08-09-2008 17:49

Re: Amir Khan signs with sky box office

Lets put it this way, Khan is a very nice guy outside the ring, but in the ring, he is being hyped up by the Warren camp, and even big Frank, is blaming himself for the defeat, 'why', he wasn't in the ring, and this is the very reason, he won't be a good boxer, every fight, l have seen him in, the opponent, has been weak, and for odvious reason Khan comes out like a bull and bang, he wins in seconds, the guy on Saturday, proved to me, that Khan would not be able to withstand a stronger fighter, and therefore needs more time, before getting any bigger, than what the Warren camp want, and it is about money, as l have said, l have seen some good boxers, and l love watching it, but you have to have a long grooming session, before going for the big one.

Osem 08-09-2008 21:40

Re: Amir Khan signs with sky box office

To be fair, another factor to be taken into account is the amount of non-boxing activities 'celebrities' like Khan get pushed into in the pursuit of good PR and of course £££££s. Possibly if they concentrated totally on boxing, Khan and his ilk would do better.
