20mb working fine until Friday then Sloooow

Anyone in the Sheffield area had a sudden slow down around 18:00 on 20 meg cable???

Normally I can download at 1200kb/sec to 1600 Kb/sec but now 400 max if I'm lucky. Straight into PC same thing thing so it isn't the router. Used Virgin media servers and ATI website as the download test as these are more reliable than speedtests.

I've switched the cable modem off for now and leave it overnight then re-connect and see what happens.

That's the beauty of having two broadband connections. I've got 8meg ukonline but it won't go higher and since I've got a dual lan router why not have load balancing and fall over protection. Hence 20 meg Virgin or at the moment very slow virgin.

UKonline is working at full speed. Virgin still slow this evening.

Post your modem config page 192.168.100.1
What modem do you have?
Have you rang tech support on 151 free (daytime as UK call centres are better)

Just phoned virgin media and there's a fault in my area which should fixed by July 3rd.

Pity it's not on the service status.

Just to add salt into the wound by mother supplier ukonline has got a fault on it's BT exchange and that's died a death. Engineer on site looking at it.

Even worse today 39k/sec from virgin media services. Time to call again.

Won't be long until I'm getting angry. Back to ukonline for the time being.

Still very slow connection speed too tired to at the moment to ring them up.
However I'm not going to be so nice to thema s this has been three weeks when the 20 meg connection is really 2 meg or less.

Scientific Atlanta Webstar EPC2100 which is now being run out of stock and being replaced by the Ambit 256 in EX-Telewest areas.

You being EX-NTL they received mainly Ambits and some other models.

Well after three days of good speed it's back to less than 4 meg connection speed. Leave a few days and try it again and then I'll have to ring up again.
Of course last time I was going to ring up I was getting over 12mb so I didn't bother.

This long lasting Saga continues.

Still without any descent speeds and the fact that UBR is overloaded without relief date makes life even better.

Thank god I never ditched UKonline 8 meg broadband always up and at promised speed. Much faster than 20 meg cable.

Even better Virgin signed me despite knowing that they couldn't provide the 20 meg service. It was broken before I signed up.

While I was getting a refund without any problems until December when Customer services lied and refused to give me a refund I wasn't that bothered.

Anyway my problem was finally escalated by Tech Support and I complained in writing to the Customer Complaints dept. Got a letter back saying they'll contact me and nothing since. So I've sent another letter today.

I suppose the next stage is talking to citizens advice since Virgin media are in breach of contract and claiming a full refund all the way back to day I signed up.

Overall a very poor company which really should be going to the wall but the fact that they aren't shows how much rubbish the British public put up with.

Sheffield S7. Been slow since September, oversubscribed. Judging by their support newsgroup, same in S5, S6, S8 and S12 (from a quick glance)

TP,

perhaps it's not just you. I am on a 20Mb connection, i don't download anything but updates for my PCs' and related software, but during the past two weeks i have been lucky to get 4Mb.

I work shifts and normally work 10 p.m - 6\8 a.m, and do not normally log on until around 4p.m, but downloading of updates is very slow, and if i go onto youtube i basically reach a standstill.

Calling VM has resulted in the following:

I have VM ware on my PC. I use Spybot S&D + CCleaner, and nothing has been detected. Online scans have revealed nothing.

I have a virus. I use Kaspersky AV Suite and nothing has been detected, neither have online scans.

I am downloading too much. I update my PCs' for updates amd watching YT and talking to mates all over the world via net cams, other than this i do not download anything.

Having read the news groups I think I am being ST'd but VM deny this.

MM, I don't know!

Can you tell me?

Are VM mass STM'ing an area of high use?
How do they know how much anyone uses, to be able to apply STM measures?
I use nothing in the way of downloads so why would i be subject to STM?

Re: 20mb working fine until Friday then Sloooow

A firstline agent should be able to tell you. If you feel your not getting anywhere with the firstline agent then post on the groups, they are manned by 2nd line agents they will be able to tell you if you were managed, when, for how long and if it was uploading or downloading that triggered it.

Though with it happening from around 2 weeks ago I doubt its STM.
Could you post your power levels & SNR from your modems configuration page. You can access it by entering 192.168.100.1 into your address bar.
User name & password is root should you be asked for them.
Could you also post the results of a ping & tracert to the bbc please.
Start>Run>type in cmd and click ok.
Type ping bbc.co.uk
Once thats finished
Type tracert bbc.co.uk

Maybe something local.

Does anyone use them while your working?
Do you connect these wireless?
Is your wireless secure?

Your information is wrong.

20Mb is reduced to 5Mb.
There are three different times of the day where monitoring is done.
10am - 3pm monitored for downloading
3pm - 8pm monitored for uploading
4pm - 9pm monitored for downloading
M,L and XL all have different limits

I'm not fully up on the trial being conducted in Preston.

graf_von_anonym 24-02-2009 02:05

Re: 20mb working fine until Friday then Sloooow

The trial information is here. The two big differences are the times that it applies, and how long. The threshholds aren't too different, but whatever time you get done it'll revert at eleven o'clock. What I have noticed is the timings for upload suggest you can get traffic managed for upload in just about 1.8 hours, so for the upstream window on weekdays it could kick in at 11:48 AM. Now, it says it'll get released at 23:00, with the maximum time being 10 hours, and since 11:48 is eleven hours and twelve minutes before then that would imply either that the penalty does wear off as it does currently or, and this is not outwith the bounds of possibility, they've done the maths wrong.*

*Or I have. The advantage of anonymity is the freedom to be wildly inaccurate.

Plenty of conversations with virgin today.
Retentions failed to call back on my mobile but left voice messages with no call back number which is pretty useless.
Rang them again today and there's work that supposed to be done on the ubr on the 20th of march. How many times have I heard that four so four so thats now five.
I don't believe any work will be done but at least virgin have twitched a little.
Flat refusal to let me upgrade to 50 meg at £35.00 cost so when march the 20th comes and passes and 1 meg on 20 meg continues I shall cancel. This was with a conversation with the complaints dept which hadn't a clue that any work was planned for the area.
At least they could talk to the network team before ringing. left hand and right hand springs to mind.
Loads of trouble in Sheffield yes we know fix it and don't lie to your customers and at least give them a way out after being dishonest.

Well looks like something happened as the up times on my dual wan 2820 show very different times.

Ukonline 248 hrs

Virgin 58hrs

Today I even got 19 meg from speedtest.net and 2235 kb/s constant from Virgin media game servers.

Still the sun is out and it's a very nice day plus mothers day tomorrow so more likely it's due to people being out and not using the service.

Not sure, my 10Mb/s service is now maxing out at 2Mb, a definite improvement over 300kb/s but still nothing like what I was expecting.

Hopefully it will finally be resolved by the end of the month.

I maybe wrong but I don't think 10 meg users are being moved across. So your speed may have increased because you may lost some 20 meg users who've shifted onto the new kit.

Looks like you maybe still on the oversubscribed UBR.
