Remove tha Hard Disks that vista will not be installed on, if there are any. Try again afterwards.

Re: PC freezes and wont install Vista

basically only have the hard drive that you want to install vista on to, just disconnect the leads i have had this sometimes but only with once installed getting it to boot.

also has anything come loose when you put the samsung hdd in?

xspeedyx 25-06-2008 17:52

disconnect the leads? sorry I am I been dumbed but I have no idea what you too mean

Re: PC freezes and wont install Vista

how many hard drives are inside your computer?

example i have 3 a western digital a samsun and a hitachi.

i use the hitachi for my vista install so what i do is:

1 open case
2 unplug sata power cable from psu to hdd on w/d and samsung
3 unplug sata cable from hdd but leave it connected to the motherboard on w/d and samsung
4 i then install windows on to the hitachi.

as you bought the hdd and psu etc im assuming you have fitted them in the pc yourself?
if so then all you do is the cables you plugged in to the samsung hdd you, just unplug them again and then install windows unless, you are installing windows on to the new hdd and have spare one's in your, pc then they would be the one's you unplug.

I might just put my IDE drive back in as the master and use the samsung as storage

Does the BIOS see the sata drive when you power on?

how would I check that?

XP Installs Fine but Vista wont

Ok I have asked this question before but the thread got lost so if a Mod wants to merge please feel welcome but I really need some help

So here I go

I brought a Samsung spinpoint SATA II HD and I can get XP to install great but Vista wont I have tryed loads of different Vista disc's and nothing, I have checked that my PC can handle Vista and it can easily.

What happens I can get to the part where the files expand when doing a fresh install and then nothing, if I install it over XP it freezes right at the end.

Any ideas would be great

Any OS install bombing out is normally one of two things...

One the disk is corrupt,scratched,dodgy
or
There's a problem with a device driver (I had this one when my GFX card wasn;t seated properly in it's AGP slot)

Check the log as it should point out to what's the problem...

I dont see why that would cause a problem considering I can install XP

Re: [Merged] PC freezes and wont install Vista

Burn the DVD on the slowest possible setting and try again. I have problems for some reason reading DVD's that are burnt faster than 2.4x

Re: [Merged] PC freezes and wont install Vista

anyone got any ideas I tryed today and I got to 7% expanding files and that took 45 minutes

Dai 01-08-2008 00:21

Re: [Merged] PC freezes and wont install Vista

Don't know what hardware you've got but try stripping it to minimum. One stick ram, optical drive and harddisk plus graphics card.
Try an install with the absolute minimum of hardware first then add any extras later.

damien c 01-08-2008 13:04

Re: [Merged] PC freezes and wont install Vista

not sure if this has been said but it could be a heat problem if it gets so far then crashes but also it then wouldn't install xp fine would it oh i'm, an idiot as suggested above take everything out that is not needed for windows to install and also what is the whole spec of the machine.

hmm can u post a list of hardware in your pc i feel sorry for ya lol using those disks and my pc lol installed in around 20 minutes and my pc isn't all that great ther must be conflcit in hardware somewhere.

done some googleing ide drive theory ruled out people have already tried it

darth are u formatting the drive or dual booting

i suggest you click advanced then delete the drive then install

as again people say its the disk bad which is not the case as i have personally tried those disks and they are legit msdn hmm another thing got your jumper set correctly on sata and dvd drive?

When I installed vista on a system with SATA Spinpoints it wouldn't recognise the drives to install. I installed a very basic XP build and then installed Vista without any problems.

Remove all RAM and start with minimum of 512 mb if you have that sized stick.Just so you can try another install?

Did you run the compatability wizard?

Boot from Vista DVD and choose command prompt.

Command line is format d: /q /fs:ntfs

Mine took about 3-4 minutes.

could be a problem with the optical drive or the media maybe?

Re: [Merged] PC freezes and wont install Vista

Have you tried replacing the sata dvd drive with an ide one just untill the install is done?
Try that as i've seen a very similar problem with an older sata motherboard and vista.

I havent got spare opital drive can anyone recommend a cheap but good sata or ide dvd drive?

I have left my pc on today trying to install vista so from 11.00 - 21.30 so might have a nice vista install when I get home lol aint holding my breath tho

damien c 06-10-2008 17:02

Re: [Merged] PC freezes and wont install Vista

lol i'd rule out the hdd now and i'd get a cheap dvd drive and if that doesn't sort it aslong as you have the cd key for vista (legit dont break copyright laws) then you could always try downloading a copy of vista.

boroboi 06-10-2008 17:14

Re: [Merged] PC freezes and wont install Vista

What vendor is your mobo from?

Sorry its been a while since i read this thread and i don't have time to re-read.

I know ASUS boards have compatability issues with SATA optical drives, escpecially the nForce 6 series and below.

I am at work atm so I dont know the model number sorry I am just confused as to what is causing the problem, as I said earlier I have left it on installing today, so when I get home @ 9pm see what the status is

if i was you i would get some dvd's not cheap ones then download a copy of vista and then try that if that works then you will know it is the disc, but this is a strange problem as you say xp installs fine but if crashes when installing vista got me stumped id try a new vista disc if possible.

All i can say is, Vista is a nightmare full stop. Btw Darth I am having the same probs installing Vista. It either freezes, or it took seven hours to eventaully install. Really considering if i can get a refund by taking it back hahaha.
Even at work the network manager refuses to have anything to do with it, I quote "it burns me it burms me" he shouts if he looks at a picture of vista :)
Once it was up and running I soon wanted Xp Pro back on. Or linux on my works pc, that still works a dream :))))))

Glad you finally got it sorted. I've never had problems with that ever, even for my customers... but i only use IDE optical drives and not SATA, which is where i still think the problem is tbh.
