[Merged] Broadband's faster future BBC check on Virgin Media Trials

lol at virginmedia bbc was talking about the future off broadband bt are going to do fibre to homes in kent i think it was then the guy went to dude home and tested there virginmedia internet connection which was supposedly 50mbits to compare around the uk it took 4 minutes on a internet connection in scotland although virginmedia did it in about 15 seconds it barely broke the 10mbit barrier about 1000 kB's lol

Impz2002 06-06-2008 09:28

Re: Virginmedia on bbc this morning

must have been a fairly small file , my 20meg never gets up to full speed unless the file is at least 40meg or so !

Do you have a link to this?

To be honest they aren't doing particularly good tests.

I tried the speed test on their site and got 2mbit speeds, went on to the newsgroups and got 20mbit speeds.

markknell 06-06-2008 10:21

Re: Virginmedia on bbc this morning

Correction, it was not 15 seconds it was around 5 seconds but considering he done this early evening, basically rush hour, that wasn't too bad. The 10MB test file from the BBC does not stress the 50 Mbps connection and barely has enough time to ramp up the speed which is a shame because it doesn't show the 50 Mbps product for what it is.

I was in hysterics (upload large files quickly! at the same time as downloading really fast!) lmao 1.5mbit is not "quick" for uploading large files.

Did anyone else notice the download was only going at 384KB/s and he seemed amazed that it finished in 5 seconds?

Horace 06-06-2008 12:09

Re: Virginmedia on bbc this morning

The download speed was building as it does when downloading too small a file over a fast connection and hit 700KB/s at the cut. It was a 10meg file and if it finished in 5 seconds then he's getting at least 20Mbit.

With a 50mbit connection it shouldnt have taken anywhere near that long just to get upto 700KB/s.

BBC servers are not exactly slow...

Anyway i was more in hysterics about the **** poor upload which is apparently really quick for uploading large files.

A better test would of been a much much larger file to exclude local network and system factors but I guess it wouldn't have been as media friendly to have him sat there for 10 minutes.

seeing as 1.5mbit is probably faster than what i can get on adsl, yes it is quick

also, the bbc's speed test is useless, i got about 2mb on it, did a speed test from my server straight after and got 20mbit

I haven't watched the full thing, and without sound (am at work), but I noticed he was using a laptop at the beginning. If everything is wireless can his router handle 50Mb?

markknell 06-06-2008 12:54

Re: Virginmedia on bbc this morning

The 10MB speed test was very popular. On the first day the BBC put this on their website I was downloading it in under 3 seconds but since then the download speeds have gone down hill drastically. The BBC said this is one of the most popular items on the BBC News website ever!

The filming was performed at a time of day the BBC's network would have been busy (7pm) so it's hardly a fair test and people need to realise the file is far too small to stress the 50 Mbps connection.

---------- Post added at 12:54 ---------- Previous post was at 12:54 ----------

The laptops were using cables.

He was using wireless :/ why are you surprised?

Also using a 10mb file with a 50mbit connection - joke imo.

100Mb/s down a BT phone line?! HA! Unless they're thinking of starting to use Cable...

That test was unrealistic also. All of a sudden it was 1 third of the way done, then it was completed?

BT are proving 100mbit through FTTH (fibre to the house, or mdu, depends how you look at it) not through copper on all(well almost) new builds from now on.

BT wanted to roll out fibre across the country quite a few years back but the govt wouldnt let them unless they opened it up to everyone, what's the point in spending 12 billion if ur not gonna see profit from it because everyone gets access?

But they are now starting to change their mind, somewhat.

If BT rolls fibre out, it will take a LONG time to get the whole country done.

But with H2o,BT,Ask4 doing fibre, if they decide to really get going then VM would be in trouble.

Traxdata, I've been using the 50 Mbps service for over a year without problems. I think everyone would love a bigger upload speed but I have no doubts Virgin Media would have to increase the price of the product outside what people can afford.

We have many people testing this service without the negativity I see on this forum. People have a choice and I'm guessing you won't one of the people to take up this service which is fair enough but I can assure you when it goes live I will be.

I've seen many people complaining (on the 50mbit forum) about the fact the service cripples if you multitask (upload and download at the same time) that would be because 1.5mbit isnt enough to handle 50mbit down while uploading at the same time (thus why they are using S.ack).

It's nothing to do with the current pricing as to why VM wont offer higher upload speeds, its down to the fact they opted for the cheaper ambit modems which have no upstream bonding capability, they should of stayed with the old ones and kept the 5+mbit upload.

Upload is just as important as download and with so many legal p2p services about the people who want 50mbit will require high upload speeds.

You seriously telling me its a serious premium product for that price with low upload AND STM upon launch? (10gb limit)

P.S Your right, i wont, i have 25mbit both ways for less than what VM will be charging for this.

Also have a backup Be line with 2.5mbit upload as well.

Edit : there is so much negativity about the 50mbit product because customers are sick and tired of being ripped off, and no matter which way you put it 1.5mbit upload just isnt a fair ratio and abit of a ****take to say the least.

I don't give a toss about the upload, as long as it's sufficient to provide 50mbit.

If I wanted a bloody good upload I'd find a service which provides it, ok?

Not everyone is like you, so to say that we're being ripped off is a tad pathetic imo.

Oh and where's the proof of STM on launch?

Well, VM love customers like you.

50Mbit is going to be a premium product aimed at people who liked to download alot of stuff and at high speed.

Those people also like to upload at high speed, yes you are being ripped off, let's see if your still spouting the same if you wish to use legal p2p services in the future (they require you to keep a fair ratio as well you know) and it takes you 15 hours to upload the amount you've downloaded.

So you think its fair and good to download something in 1 hour but take 20 hours to upload the same amount of data back?

I think you fail to see just how important upload speeds are.

Robertus 06-06-2008 14:03

Re: Virginmedia on bbc this morning

No, I do not like to upload at high speeds, but yes of course I like to download.

I don't really use any P2P systems thanks :)

Infact, I only go as far as uploading a few pictures and that's it. All of my backup is offline :)

So your one of those who just leech leech and leech, that explains everything :)

I think you should note without people who are willing to upload you wouldnt be able to download half the stuff you can nor at the speeds you can.

Hmmm... we're not using Ambit modems!

No limits have yet been set on the product so it will be interesting to see what happens on the launch. I agree an unreasonable limit would spoil the product but it would be nice if people made their mind up when all the details are released.

The limits have already been set for launch, actually.

They are thinking of charging a higher price and removing STM though.

Any sort of limit would spoil the product, the whole point of a high speed connection is to be able to download files quicker.

STM doesnt make sense on 50mbit, in theory if you can download files quicker u get things quicker and thus can free bandwith up on the network.

Quite the opposite, i dont like neil and dont get along, it's his fault we have permanent STM and poor upload speeds on the 50mbit.

No, it doesnt give anyone a negative view of you, it's just a matter of pointing out that because you dont give a flying *aherm* about upload speeds you obviously fail to see how important it is to have *good* upload speeds on such a premium product.

So Usenet is void now is it?

And to be honest with systems such as Fileplanet/Gamershell/Steam there's an awful lot of legitimate stuff to download :)

No..I don't fail to see it. But at the same time I don't need an amazing upload, so it doesn't bother me. I'm happy with a nice download.

Of course I see that it's the top tier and should be restriction free/5mbit+ upload etc etc...

You only have that stuff off usenet thanks to people with high upload speeds, so it matters in that situation as well :p:

So you do admit you just take take and take then ;)

Exactly..which goes back to my original point as why higher upload speeds are needed, sites like that even do p2p stuff now (even itunes US does and soon will the UK side) legal movie sites etc as well..legal streaming, all require good upload speeds.

TraxData, a lot of the information about the 50 Mbps trial on this forum is very, very out of date. To be honest we might as well leave it at that because this thread is going a little off tangent.

I guess no one really knows what's going on until the product launches because these things change all the time.

If you try uploading and downloading on 50mbit it cripples to sub par speeds.

What do i need high upload for? let's see, legal home movies, legal p2p services, legal hd streams, legal streaming, legal app use, legal linux distro use, etc, list goes on and on and on..

Also plenty of illegal reasons as well for some people :p:

For 50mbit down you really need 5mbit up to really sell it as a premium package, lets face it 50mbit package is going to be aimed at high speed downloaders/uploaders.

Broadband's faster future

Quote:

In the future everyone could have the option of getting their broadband at up to 100Mb per second - and some homes can already get speeds of up to 50Mb per second.

Rory Cellan-Jones has been inside a home with a fibre-optic connection to see what difference this superfast broadband can make.

I presume this means the feedback from the trials has been favourable & they are now thinking how it can be deployed - although I wonder if the 5 seconds it apparently took the 10MB file to download was foot in mouth for the BBC speed test or the 50Mb/s trial?

I work that out to be about 16Mb/s ;)

markknell 06-06-2008 21:49

Re: [Merged] Broadband's faster future BBC check on Virgin Media Trials

It was the BBC speed test which was the problem. There is always a weakest link from a to b in the internet and this time it was the BBC. The 50 Mbps trials have been sound. I performed this test earlier in the week and done it under 3 seconds but that was before the hype that the BBC generated.

In any case a 10 MB file is far to small to test 50 Mbps.

It wasn't so much the numbers, themselves, but that they allowed them to be broadcast like a good thing - as in, whomever did the script knew nothing about what 50 Mb/s speed should be & it still got passed through to the final take???

Well i thought that was obvious as soon as he said "10 seconds, so as youcan see, wow its alot faster"...but what really did it for me was the "you can upload large files quickly!" alot of emphasis on "quickly", to me it was stupidly obvious this guy had no clue what he was going on about.

It's relative, most people in this country are probably on 2-4mbit download and .5 upload if that, so to them it is a huge improvement assuming they can get cable and will take the package.

As for BT and fibre, give it another 20 years and you might see the country fibred up assuming the goverment gives BT our taxes. They've never shown any interest in wide-scale deployment, doing a few showcases here and there is meaningless. Up till then cable is my only option for anything faster than 4mbit which is what I'd get with BT's current underinvested infrasture. It's a pity BT was privatised since I'm sure if it wasn't we'd be keeping up with the Swedes and Japanese.

You couldnt be more wrong.

BT wanted to roll out fibre in the 90s, it was blair that said no to them, you can thank him for the fact we all get screwed over with our net now.

BT are in plans to rollout fibre all across the UK, thus why they was on the news today, if the 100mbit trial they are running now works out they are going to do a full roll out.

From what i hear they are thinking about working with H2o and doing it all through the sewers which would see the UK get fibre quite quickly.

It was 5 seconds not 10 and his comparison was to 4 minutes so yes of course it's a lot faster

Really.... just curious but where the did you hear that ??? BT have been saying for years they will not do it as they will have to pass it on to the competition and it costs too much. They even said so on the report.

It was still slow, have you tried the BBC speed test ? jumped straights to 2MB/s here.

I thought everyone who was around in the late 80s/early 90s knew about this? from what i can recall it was on the news, the govt said no due to finding it too expensive to dig up roads/lay new cable and didnt want to spend our taxes on it!

After that they wouldnt roll fibre out of their own pocket because they would be forced to open it up to other companies thus wasting their money.

Again, as i said, they are trialling 100mbit right now on all new builds, if successful they -will- roll out fibre if people want it.

Come on be serious, they even said in the report this in unlikely to happen due to costs.

Are BT rolling out fibre to anywhere outside Ebbsfleet ??? Hmmm I'd like to see where!

Anyway, I'm off to bed and then away to the US for a week. Enjoy the thread :)

Nah, i think you'll note she said if customers want it and are willing to actually pay good prices for it, they'll roll it out, alot is going on with BT atm.

Hope they do anyway, H2o, ask4, BT, VM need some competition.

Enjoy the US :)

I guess they had to do a like for like comparison. The interviewer had been going all around the country downloading this file...it would have looked odd if he didn't do the same thing on the 50Mbps network. But there's no way it would have reached 50Mbps with such a relatively small file. Like a fast car, it would have still been accelerating when the download finished!

I agree the first point is relevant from the presenters POV, my point is how did VM marketing people approve it, when it seems to infer their service is slower than advertised - and without any explanation ...

Such as your second point, which is also valid - and could have been used to give a nice positive spin to the piece ???

Remember it wasn't an advert...it's probably very difficult to get the BBC to report things exactly how you'd like! But it was definately better than nothing!

true, it's just I'd be surprised if it wasn't previewed to VM before being broadcast, and if it was, that they allowed it to apparently misrepresent the service?

- I know I'm just being picky and most people watching the clip won't have got their calculators out :)

the fact is VM BB is alot faster than anything else out there. Lets not split hairs.

I got an AppleTV thing, and I can hire a HD movie off the iTunes web site and I don't have to wait. (Maybe this is the future so maybe download speed is more important than upload speed, its about buying content quickly)

FYI I prefer to hire a movie off iTunes cause I can watch it for 48 hrs, not the poxy 24 hrs VM on-demand offer, but thats another story.

Got to be honest BT have no chance of competing with cable technology.

VM are not the fastest.

Actually upload speed is going to be important as 95% of all current and new services are going the p2p route to save bandwith, this will require you to upload, with a pitterful 1.5mbit upload on the 50mbit package i doubt you'll keep your app open all night/day just to seed back what you downloaded.

There is ALOT of legal HD p2p services coming soon, for which will probably be useless in the UK due to no one actually having good enough upstream.

You wont be saying that in another year, trust me.

My point still stands though, its useless with that upload...then there is the STM on 50mbit. then overnight STM, the new application throttling that's being trialled etc, only thing your connection is gonna be useful for is looking at emails!

I don't understand why I'm gonna need to send data fast to receive a high def film on my AppleTV???!!?! I currently don't need a fast upload speed, and currently am very very happy with the content I can access through my AppleTV thing. Incase you don't know what it does, I can watch movies over the internet on my TV without using a PC, accesing the iTunes store.

It is not important for me to send data fast. I want to receive data fast. When you send an email, you don't sit their waiting for it to go do you, but you you do wait for an email to arrive.

BTW Whats STM?

You realise you need to upload to download, right?

Try watching that hi-def movie on 50mbit while browsing the net/downloading something else etc, the upstream isnt fast enough (1.5mbit), any sort of multitasking will literally cripple the hell out of it.

I know what AppleTV is, and they will be using P2P in the future for IPTV, 1.5mbit upload isnt gonna cut it when that happens.

Sending data fast is just as and sometimes even more important than recieving data fast, but i dont think you understand that =/

STM = Subscriber Traffic Management which as i'm sure your aware is now 10am-3pm and 4pm-9pm, hope you wont be watching you hi-def movies then because you get shaped down to 5mbit (not fast enough for hi-def streaming) and 10mbit on the 50mbit tier :D

Re: [Merged] Broadband's faster future BBC check on Virgin Media Trials

Apple TV has a hard drive, so its cached.

STM is there to get rid of P2P abusers. Take a look at Keconnect, its a top independent ISP. Support lines are in the UK, and will answer in 3 rings. Unlimited broadband is staggering £129 per MONTH, with no fair usage policy.
http://www.keconnect.co.uk/products/...ial/broadband/
VM offer excellent value for money for the majority of people. The only customers that are not happy, are the one's that expect £129 per month broadband service for £5.50 per month.

Anyhow, lets not miss the point, I currently don't have any issues with what I do with my BB, and I do more than most.

So to summarize this thread, maybe we're worrying unduly about future problems, from future technologies, that may or may not occur.

LOL!!! STM to get rid of P2P abusers? *laughing fit*

STM is there to make sure they can add more users to an already oversubscribed service while not having to upgrade any part of the network.

It has nothing to do with p2p users or heavy downloaders or people who affect the network, why do you think 2mbit users have been getting stm'd and getting letters from VM?!"!!

Err no, the ones that are not happy are the ones who come home from a hard days work and expect to be able to use the net they are paying for, for just a few hours, without being classed as an abuser and getting 75% of their connection taken away from them, actually.

Heavy users could care less about STM, they just download overnight.

But overnight STM is being trialled as is application throttling etc.

That's funny, i have unlimited broadband, im hitting 5-7TB/Month right now with 25/25 connection...and 2-3TB/Month with the backup Be line..oops..no stm crap, no traffic shaping, no application throttling.

Some of us know people very high up and already know what VM have in their mind for the future and it sure aint pretty.

damien c 16-06-2008 12:25

Re: [Merged] Broadband's faster future BBC check on Virgin Media Trials

vm don't want anyone to use there internet for anything other than surfing the net and also checking emails. but they still keep saying unlimited which it is but what they should say is, "if you want to use your unlimited internet fully then you will have to suffer with only a quarter of your d/l speed". i think it is pathetic as people say it is to try to stop p2p but i, tried to download a couple of linux discs about 10gb worth in total just as a test, and as most people are aware most linux's are free unyet i got to 3gb downloaded and got stm'd, so it's not just p2p it is any form of downloading be it legal or ilegal, and also my dad was stm'd the other night at around 2am so they are also stm'ing you at the night now.
simply put if there was a bb supplier out there that didn't have the stm and, that also could give 20mbit+ for less than £50 a month i'd sign, up to them straight away but not adsl because i live to far away from the local bt exchange.

References from you are worthless as has been noted in the past

That's from London and most other cities and towns give the same results. Average of 10meg, 8 in my area.

1)Speedtest are not representive of the speeds one can achieve.

2)Most speed problems are down to crappy face plates and extention wiring.

3) -rolls eyes- technology changes all the time, need i say more.

Yes you need say more, if all your answers are going to be random ifs, whats and maybe this time next year then don't expect to be given any credibility.
People are not interested in corporate blurb about what may be technically possible they want hard facts as what definitely available in their area. You're advocating customers leave VM on the premise they will get a much better service elsewhere when it's simply not true.

Hmmmm so am I right in thinking something is gonna happen in the future that is gonna ruin my cable BB experience, which is technology, cause it changes, but your not gonna be specific or tell us.

My Aunts a Jehovah Witness and regularly pops round to say good bye cause of the impending Armageddon. I suppose because of growing up with a crack pot Aunt makes me a tad skeptical when people make claims about the future.

TraxData I think you should put some small print at the end of your posts, like "for entertainment only" or "not experimentally proven" thats what other fortune tellers have to do.
