The Euro 2008 thread

Ok, none of the home nations are in it :(

Regardless, unless you're into the Olympics (or cycling), it's the main sporting event this summer, and it kicks off in slightly over 2 weeks.

What (if any) team will you support? Or will you just not bother as none of the home teams are in it?

I'm supporting Holland (as usual) but have planned for several changes of underwear as we face France, Italy and Romania in the group phase. :erm:

I'm going for a team that looks fantastic on paper but always underachieves in competitions so I'll feel right at home.

Spain for me..

I'm going for Italy, only because some of my family are from there, not because of the style of football they play. I will also be hoping Portugal do well.

Its sad that footy supporters here will have to adopt a team for the Euros lol. I will be supporting Portugal for very same reason... lots of family in Portugal, as wel as being born Portuguese.

Aslong as Ruud is fit i think the Dutch will be okay, also you have Huntelaar, who is supposed to be excellent and Kuyt, well, the less we say about him the better :)

well if van Basten is going to be brave then I quite fancy the following line up

v/d Sar
(defence leaks more then a sif)
van persie/van der vaart/robben
kuijt
van Nistelrooij and Huntelaar

---------- Post added at 17:58 ---------- Previous post was at 17:55 ----------

okay have to be fair.... defence:
de Cler/Mathijsen/Afellay/van Bronckhorst

Re: The Euro 2008 thread

Well, it's official now. The Brits (well, the sensible part of them that reads the Guardian) support Holland.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...08.netherlands

Quote:

t has taken a labyrinthine process of celebrity endorsements, two rounds of voting and the unravelling of an intricate internet election scam.

But Guardian readers have finally produced a definitive answer to the big question about Euro 2008, at least if you're British - who to support in the first major football tournament without either a British or an Irish presence since 1984. And the answer is: the Netherlands. The final verdict was arrived at via an online poll from a shortlist of Romania, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany.
Quote:

There were 48,232 votes cast in the poll, the overwhelming majority of them - 96.2% - for the Netherlands. Spain came second with 1.8% of the vote, followed by Germany (1.4%); Sweden (0.4%) and Romania (0.2%). If the level of support for the Netherlands seems surprisingly high, it is because Dutch ingenuity even extended to hacking into and trying to rig the Guardian's online poll.

In the final days of voting, the Dutch website GeenStijl (literally "no style") instigated a campaign to tilt the balance their country's way, eventually spawning a triumphant piece of hacking that gave Holland an improbable percentage of the votes.

Since they would have won without cheating, the Guardian decided not to disqualify the team.
:D

No we dont.... well Ronaldo used to, and I thought he was going to be up to his old tricks today when he fell over in the first 10 mins. Disappointed with Deco, but Boswinga looks very good, cant wait to see him in the Chelsea shirt. Both goals were classy tho, nice one two for the first a a great turn to set up the second.

Hit the woodwork three times, scored twice. Can't argue with it. A good win for Portugal. Firm favourites for the top spot in the group now. I'm not sure about Turkey/Czech Republic. Watching Switzerland - Czech Republic I was wondering: are Switzerland better than I thought they would be, or are the Czechs worse. Czechs v Turkey will be the decider for second spot.

From that match it's quite clear who the cheats are, two ridiculous dives in the penalty area from Turkish players with no cards given by the ref for some reason. Some of the fouls by Turkish players were horendus, especially in the second half.

it is a fact that Turkey plays like that....but then so are portugal normally as soon as a player gets near them they hit the ground like they been shot by a 40mm cannon

WW3 about to start on BBC1.

A gem from Stubbsy: "There's a bit of rivalry between these two countries..." (Germany v Poland).

Kudos to Lineker for having the guts to say the old joke: "If this were a game of scrabble, Poland would win easily"

Van Persie is not ruled out for the Italy game though. :)

Germany looked alright, if a bit weak at the back. Croatia were disappointing imo (apart from a half hour spell). Austria were unlucky to not get a draw. I've not written off Poland yet. I can see them beating Croatia, and Croatia will struggle against Germany.

I'm looking forward to tonights matches, the first matches in the tournament that could go either way and not have an obvious favourite. I think Romania will cause an upset and beat the French and then Italy will beat the Dutch :)

Certainly looks ominous for the Poles. They sent out a search party for Smolarek at half time and found nothing. Rumour has it he may have been on his way back to Rotterdam for coffee and cakes ;)
