yep iv got the same software version as you & iv always had subtites on VM's channels & UKTV channels.

BenMcr 15-05-2008 16:38

Re: V Boxes update

The update converts all channels that were using 888 (VBI) subtitles to digital subtitles.

It also allows you to hard reset the box by holding down the power button on the front (you don't have to turn it off at the plug anymore)

Is this an ex-telewest thing? I am still on 11.3.2_ukcable. I have subtitles on Virgin 1 though...

No it is a region thing. Both ex-ntl and ex-tw are being updated

Re: V Boxes update

Mine updated when I switched the set top box on this evening;

Application version - 13.100.1_ukcable

Re: the subtitles - one thing I've just noticed is when you switch them on from the mini guide bar it prompts you with "Are you sure you want to turn subtitles on?".

Other things I've noticed;

- Reminders can now be unset via the OK button with the mini guide bar up (as mentioned in a post above)

- The programme information popup is much bigger (unless it's just my imagination?) giving more room to fit in long programme descriptions and names

- It seems to flick through the channels faster when using the left and right arrows

- All the menus just seem quicker (again, this might just be my imagination)

- iPlayer seems to load quicker

? why did you switch it off ? your meant to leave it on 24/7 uno ;)

Strange, I leave mine on 24/7 it never upgrades .So when I see upgrade here I switch off at least 48 hrs after the post here. The upgrade up to new seems to happen, But only if left off over night. Switch couple of minutes & switch back on do not seem to work.

PS Its a sammy

Not all areas have got the upgrade. It is being rolled out staged area by area

I've turned the box off every night for the past 3-4 years and it's done no harm. :)

I'd rather not have the house go up in smoke. :D

Re: V Boxes update

No update here .. old Pace Di1000 ..

Application Version .. 11.1.8.2_ukcable

Edit .. something else just occured to me .. I also have an old Pace Di1010 which unfortunately has the old Telewest menu setup (the 3x3 blocky style of menu rather than the list style) .. if I left this plugged in overnight, would it update to the new Virgin software?

It would be real handy if it did, because the Di1000 is a bit of an old dog .. very slow and needs re-booting quite a lot! .. even though it has the newer style of menus ..

Can anyone confirm this would be OK or not?

BenMcr 16-05-2008 14:26

Re: V Boxes update

If you haven't had the Virgin software update, you need the box swapped out.

All STBs should have the Virgin software on it. I thought the last ones that couldn't be updated were got rid of in Autumn last year!!!!

Phone faults and let them know. You will probably end up with a Samsung ;)

Not one that can be published. The reason is that dates may be changed depending on the reports they get back with progress so far.

If they suddenly get a load of boxes failing they will stop the update till they work it out

Re: V Boxes update

I re-booted my V Box last night and recieved the upgrade (Essex).

However should my box still show the ntl:home loading screen. Also it shows no channels listed in the Shop & Play or High Definition sections of the TV Guide.

I'm really glad that I can now get digital subtitles on the music channels! Well most of them, I haven't them on The Hits, The Box and Kiss and they seem to lag behind the song on Smash Hits and Magic.

That needs some tweaking to be done at the headend. Possibly it can't be done until everyone has got the new software.

The injustice of it. People in 'B' for Biggleswade getting the upgrade before people in 'A' for Aylesbury. I may as well be living in 'Z' for Zimbabwe!

Well my Samsung is still on 11.1.8_ukcable, when I look in the techy stuff menu it just lists a load of TFTP put errors. Lots of them every day. Also for some odd reason my credit is £30.16p just seems like an odd number.

(177) Tftp Put fail: data write error
(177) Tftp Put fail: data write error
(177) Tftp Put fail: data write error
(176) Tftp Put fail: network not ready
(177) Tftp Put fail: data write error

Might try to force an update later

Oh and there's another one "IPPTV ERROR"

This is all from memory, so it might not be IPPTV, but it's along those lines.

That's all completely normal.

Don't force an update - you just risk breaking the box. If there is an update available in your area, a simple reboot will pick it up. If there is no update, forcing it won't help.

I know I'm 'virtually' in Watford. I was going to say that in the original post but I was too embarassed  to admit it. Still have only the old 11.1.8.2_ukcable here though. I bet they have the new software in Aarhus (in the middle of Denmark - thank you Suggs and Madness).

Woo-Hoo!!! Three hours later I tried another reboot and now I have the 13.100.1_ukcable software! I enjoyed watching the display on the STB front panel during the update. It's better than some of the programmes on TV :(. So far all I've noticed is that there is one less Settings / Technical Stuff screen (not sure what's missing) and the STB displays more status information on startup. Nice to see the LEDs being used for something other than the name PACE and the current channel number. How about the time of day?

I've tried the 'press and hold' of the power / standby button to do a cold boot. More "Woo-Hoo!!!". That's a major improvement. Rather foolishly, knowing that this was coming, I still went and purchased a remote control 3-pin power socket yesterday (£4.49 from Maplin) for that very purpose. Oh well. I may have another use for it and, anyway, it still allows me to reboot from the comfort of the sofa.

I have cancelled a reminder from both the TV Guide and the Mini Guide. Just press OK|Select on the programme to initiate the cancel reminder dialogue in the same way as the set reminder works. Also "Woo-Hoo!!!". Shame you can't get straight to the reminders screen from the Mini Guide by, say, pressing Yellow. It would also be nice if programmes that had a reminder set were flagged in the TV Guide and Mini Guide (an asterisk or similar would suffice).

The reminders area still needs a lot of work. The reminder appears to be associated with the time only, so if you set a reminder for Mythbusters at 15:00 on DMAX channel 197, you can cancel it by pressing OK|Select on Mythbusters at 15:00 on Discovery Science channel 219 (or any other programme at 15:00) and it does not set a reminder for the latter in its place. Still, it's a big improvement.

I'm sure it's been asked many times before but if the update is available via a forced update then that means that VM have made the update available on a server somewhere yes?

Are you saying that the steps the box goes through to do the forced update can break the box or that if it's not being updated via a normal reboot you shouldn't be force updating the box?

Surely forced update or not, if the software has been made available to the network, it's of good enough quality to be installed via whichever method?

Unlike the Sky boxes there is no way to 'force' an update on a cable STB. It will update next time it is rebooted if the update is avaliable, or in some circumstances Virgin will make the boxes reboot to update

hardly anything visable tbh has changed, maybe the ability to set reminders via the mini guide or remove them too is an update [whooppi you say lol]

think it just fixes a few internal bugs but might be wrong?

It locked up on Hallmark (190) with a frozen picture, no sound and wouldn't respond to the remote or front panel controls (even the LED didn't blink when a button was pressed) so a warm reboot wasn't possible. I powered off and on but it was coming up with the dreaded 'Err3' which I believe implies a memory fault and usually requires a replacement box.

I persevered however and, after a few attempts at rebooting, the box eventually displayed a screen saying "Do not switch off ... your software is being updated" (or similar). Lo and behold!, after a few minutes, all was well again. I did have a problem later that evening but the symptoms were different and something I had seen before and knew how to fix so it may be unrelated or it could be the signs of an ageing box.

The point being that it seemed to download the same version of the software as I already had. So, it appears that the box eventually recognised that the software had become corrupt and needed to be reloaded.

However, is there a way to force a reload in situations where the box is slow to diagnose the fault?

Hardware Type: DiTV2000
Hardware Version: P2.18
Software Version: 13.100.1_ukcable
Application Version: 3_6_11_P10N_P_P2000_R_
QOS: copper.cm

You don't need to force it. It checks the software every time you reboot, so you simply need to reboot. If the software is corrupt, it will download again. If it isn't, you've got nothing to worry about.

Whatever, you should ring VM to report the fault. Just tell them you are getting "Err3" on the front panel.

Everybody with a V+ has (apart from those that got it a couple of weeks ago). Ignore the application version, 3.2.5.1 is the important bit.

The HW version may vary depending on how old your box is.

Yep, I got the same Application version as you. Suppose it doesn't make much odds as long as it works :-)

Well, as soon as the most recent update happened I tried again to delete 'stuck' invalid series links (that would normally need a reformat to remove).
And it deleted fine, without corrupting any of the other lists (of recorded programs for instance).

Woo hoo !

Has anyone else noticed that VOD programmes no longer tell you how long they are showing for? Seems to have happened with the upgrade.

Its still there but now only shows up when the programme only has a few days or so left on the service.

It will show up if it is less than 14 days. The change is seperate to the V+ update

If you reboot the V+ box and go into the technical stuff menu the application version is 23.50.1 and shortly afterwards the application version changes to 23.50.1p36
If you then play an on demand programme and go back into that menu the application version changes again to 23.50.1p36/20080801r0

I also notice I can now cancel reminders by pressing OK on the program in the EPG.

Sorry to bump an old thread .. but it seems like Virgin have just decided to bump this old update my way ..

My V box (old Telewest style!) has just been updated to 13.013.1_ukcable

Thats just over a year after the first poster here reported the same .. how odd is that!
