Re: V+ INstalled
I'm hoping to get it installed in the next week or two, filmfan (don't I know you from somewhere!). I hope my experience is as good as yours. I'm still unsure of how much HD stuff you actually get with V+, can you help me on that score? Also, how much HD stuff do you get with Virgin without V+? Finally, can you get BBC HD on VM and if so, on what channel and is it shown in HD? Sorry, so many questions ....
|
Re: V+ INstalled
BBC HD on channel 108 in full HD (if you connect through HDMI) and most programmes in 5.1 Dolby (if you connect the digital optical sound cable to a suitable amplifier).
Other free HD through VOD Extras. Also, films you pay for. On standard V box, there is no HD output. At present on V+, no more HD but a very good upscaled SD picture (for a modern TV through HDMI) on channels which are broadcast in good bandwith. Good picture too on CRT TV's through scart, but set to RGB output. Like FILMFAN, I am an extremely satisdfied customer and really appreciate the ease of recording all episodes of a series. No problems since installed December 2007 |

The only sites that I use the "filmfan" name are the Dont Dump it in Lincoln and the same site for Sleaford, though very rarely use the Sleaford site now. I dont have HD TV at the moment, will have to save up a bit for that, But, as mentioned you watch the HD Preview on Channel 108 but in Standard Mode. I'm experimenting with some of the things on V+ and am in Love with it, had fun last night by keep rewinding on Live TV and watching a Car Crash (Sick Devil LOL) over and over. Have at last found the BBC Channel that carries "Look North" rather that Central or whatever. Channel 858 and Yorkshire on 870. "Walter" City of Lincoln |
Re: V+ INstalled
Sorry to confuse you with another filmfan, filmfan.
Anyway, my new V+ arrives on Friday, so that should prove to be quite exciting. And my new telly arrived today. I was a bit startled that the installer first tried to connect via HDMI and then said "Oh, no signal" and immediately plugged it in via the scart. Should I be worried? |
Re: V+ INstalled
if you mean that you dont get your V+ receiver until friday then how do you expect to get HDTV before then ?

OK, I feel, deservedly, a fool now. Just wait until I encounter you on another site dedicated to something I do know about, though - it certainly won't be on this one! |
Re: V+ INstalled
lol i wasnt having ago it just didnt make sense, it was like you were trying to say that you were expecting to get HD when you hadnt had it installed yet. anyways i dont use this name on any other sites so good luck on that one :p:
|
Re: V+ INstalled
No, you are quite right, it didn't make any sense at all. I just had a crisis having read that all hd tellies should be connected via those leads, rather than scart.
OK, a moment of techno-madness, forgive me! God, I remain so excited by this new telly. The picture on this is Panasonic is wonderful, I can hardly imagine how HD will make it better. |
Re: V+ INstalled
oh i see well i dont have a HD tv but i would of thought that in order to get the full benefits you'd have to use HDMI cables as they carry the correct HD signals. again i dont have HD so im just guessing here ;)
|
Re: V+ INstalled
Well I'm going out on a limb, here, and wildly assuming that the person who comes to install the new HD enabled box just might have brought the relevant cables with them. Call me an optimist!
|
Re: V+ INstalled
haha i would of though so, however knowing VM id doubt it.
|
Re: V+ INstalled
Yes. I can't help but feel that Virgins are being raped by Sky. I hate the company and not only do I not want a dish but I am not allowed to have one, unless it's very
discreet. But we do seem to be at the end of the food chain. And I spend a bloody fortune with them each month, the swines |
Re: V+ INstalled
aye i agree i get more channels for free with Sky FTV then i do from paying for VM XL.
|
Re: V+ INstalled
Why on earth would you have both?
|
Re: V+ INstalled
cuz i dont & cant have a phone line & i like most of the FTA channels that Sky have to offer. once my contract with VM is past the 12 month period im gonna switch to Sky by getting a second hand box contract.
|
Re: V+ INstalled
That's 24 year old's for you! They use text language and jump ship when the going get's tough, tsk.
Thanks for your help, though. |
Re: V+ INstalled
lol whats age got to do with it ? iv had both VM & Sky (subscription) in the past & 2bh with VM iv had nowt but hassle. while i cant speak for other ppl with Sky i never had any problems & when our Sky receiver packed in an engineer came & replaced it the next day & realigned our dish cuz the kids across the street thru a football at it lol
|
Re: V+ INstalled
Age has something to do with it because I have to decipher your curious words, cable. It's not having a go at you, personally.
What's wrong with using an apostrophe? Capital letters to start a sentence? Commas? The idea of written communication, using all of the above, is to help people understand what you have written. You're a bit of whizz at computers, clearly. And I admire you for that, but please don't think that typing in madlanguage excuses you from using the odd full stop or comma! Personal rant over |
Re: V+ INstalled
lol im far from a computer wizz i just spend alot of time on mine :p:
|
Re: V+ INstalled
Well the time you have spent is to my benefit, so thank you for that.
Why not move on and learn how to punctuate your sentences? I'm not being critical, I'm trying to give you some seriously good advice. I wish you luck because you are seriously capable and enthusiastic. If I received a cv written in that sort of language, I doubt very much if the person would get to an interview. Oh ****, I've gone into older-person speak. |
Re: V+ INstalled
i do use punctuation however i guess we have different views on the use of punctuation & i know your giving advice, which is all good ;)

Re: V+ INstalled
I intended it to mean on BBC HD channel 108 most programmes in 5.1 Dolby (if you connect the digital sound cable to a suitable amplifer), NOT on SD channels. Sorry not to have been clear.
|
Re: V+ INstalled
Ahh. Thanks. That makes sense now.
Please note, you don't need to use an optical connector to get the DD audio - an HDMI cable to the receiver works just as well (although you may need to use the audio override function on the V+ to ensure that it sends DD via the HDMI connector). |
Re: V+ INstalled
Unfortunately, my ancient Yamaha amplifier does not take HDMI, but it does a good job with the digital optical. I see in another thread, higgsfield, that you have an Onkyo which you recommend. I am saving up! One day . . .
|
Re: V+ INstalled
Well the HDMI is certainly convenient - but the audio data is the same via optical. So whether it sounds good is up to the other features on the receiver (and your speakers!).
|
Re: V+ INstalled
I apologise to cable guy for being a bit sniffy with his txt spk, it just drives me insane! And thanks to him and everyone else for all your help.
I got a WiiFit game today - it damned nearly killed me just carrying it - and shopping -home! The thing weighed a ton, well, a lot. Goddammit, I've been injured and made unfit by simply carrying the damn thing! |
Re: V+ INstalled
thats ok & what do you mean by a WiiFit ?

Re: V+ INstalled
I phoned Virgin today and told them that I wanted to be sure the new V+ would be installed with HDMI cables, and he said he'd ensure the engineer brought them, but couldn't guarantee they'd install them. I was then ensured it was terribly easy to install them myself. A two minute job for me, I was told. Hmmm.
Sorry earlier about banging on about wiifit, it just chuckled me that it incapitated me, trying to drag it home along with shopping. I've been physically a wreck since then! Wrong thread though. |

Well it took about two hours, frankly, but the job was finallly done.
Won't it be lovely when programmes are actually shown in HD? If I'm still alive, especially. |
Re: V+ INstalled
glad to hear that your up & running nice1 ;) & at if your still alive :p:
|
Re: V+ INstalled
eeeeee - i remember when all this were fields - back then yo were lucky t' get a picture at all :)
|
Re: V+ INstalled
My Goodness, I'm really thrilled with this! V+ is fantastic. OK, it's limited and it annoys me those swines over on SKY get to see far more programmes in HD than I do, but I have some pride, that than pig Murdoch isn't getting too much of my money.
I loved watching the FA cup final in HD, and the programme about Russia, And I can't wait for tomorrow night's China programme at 9pm. Brilliant, BBC HD. |
