Good old Boris. London may well crumble to bits within 4 years but we'll all be laughing as it happens.

Boris on Ken about 7/7 - "[Ken has the] thanks and admiration of millions of Londoners, even if today you think they had a funny way of showing it"

Boris: "Thanks to.. the knocker-uppers"

And I can't think about Boris without thinking of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWIUp19bBoA

I thought Boris's victory speech was very gracious, much more than Ken deserved. I'd have stuffed one of his newts where the sun don't shine and told him to go forth and multiply :D

Ken's speech was very gracious as well. Also Ken did deserve that speech from Johnson and it's the least he could say.

Ken has a respectable record of achievement, he had been major for 8 years, and working for London for *i think* over 25 years. His speech about after 7/7 and today showed real passion for London, his voice was constantly breaking.

I think he deserves the standing ovation he got, and the testaments made to his service.

Glad to see the Henley boy won it!

Now - please forgive my ignorance on the subject, but what does the mayor actually do?

Does he have control over the London City of London / Greater London budget and will he get to wear a nice gold chain! LOL!

There you go, Tory voters always looking for someone to lift them out of the hole they have dug themselves into instead of sorting their own lives out, will never happen.
Stop dreaming and get off your duff if you want things to improve, nothing will change unless you make it happen.
Remember, there is nothing to fear except fear itself. ;)

Depends, Livingston introduced the Oyster Cards, The New Buses, The "buy a ticket before you get on the Bus" scheme, Congestion Charge, Started Crossrail, and was always good at getting money from Whitehall to fund his projects such as Crossrail and the investment for the Underground/East-End/New Stadium he secured after winning the Olympics.

In other Words, The Major can do quite a lot.

Don't feel sorry for me as I (and most people I know) am breathing a sigh of relief having had to put up with an obnoxious dictatorial slimeball for 8 years. The prospect of another 4 years of cronyism really didn't bear thinking about.

Those charges of cronyism were overblown IMO. The problem was not so much the allegations which were weak and not exactly over the top but how he reacted to them (not apologizing etc).

I think Transport for London was improved so much, The Oyster Card, The flat rate Buses, Buying the Tickets before you get on, Better bus times and more buses.

Not to mention Crossrail.

Ken Livingstone was not perfect by any means but I don't see why that means he needs to be removed in favor of someone with no experience and who seems to have been put forward because he was a funny guy.

There was plenty of cronyism before City Hall Damien - at the GLC and in Lambeth for example. All a bit before your time though....

I remember those days, I used to go to collage in London on day release for my apprenticeship, and I specifically remember Ken dropping the fares on the tube to a 20p go anywhere rate. As regards his last 8 years I think Ken was a overall success due to the fact he put Londoner's first, not the Labour party, a lesson Boris should follow if the Tories ever come to power.

Oh yeah Sure

Why is it that the BNP supporters believe don't lie? All politicians lie to get elected except for the BNP eh? It's not at all historic since he did lie, and as with all politicians, they all would claim they did not lie.

The BNP lied about the Mega-Mosque, They have lied about Asian Gangs, I could go on but we have gone over this so many times before it's simply not worth it.

He can't be as bad as Red Ken.

A question to Ken Livingstone.

You claim to support an integrated and tolerant (respected) multi-cultural London society.
Please justify your claim having given support for the construction of the largest mosque in Christendom whilst denying the construction of a church for local Christian communities.
So much for your respect of the democratic right of conscience and expression when transgressing your bias of secular progression; in particular your anti-Christian angst. Such bigotry denies your candidacy.

Because the style and structure of the question is radically different from your previous posts.

It was concise, lucid, grammatically and syntaxically correct, and precisely punctuated - not common characteristics of your postings.

Delighted red Ken has gone he who caused thousands of businesses to suffer huge losses due to congestion charge while himself riding around in taxis. Just one of many reasons why London should be thankful. Boris has to prove he is up to the job firstly by tackling crime. Make London safe again. Of course they do - I've never said that politicians of any persuasion are perfect, quite the reverse in fact.

You've actually highlighted one of the reasons why I still haven't decided who I'll be voting for at the next election - none inspire me with great confidence right now.

However, in removing a truly odious little dictator from his grand palace, the electorate have shown they're waking up and have served notice that nobody is now safe. If that was all this election could be about it'd have been worth it and that should put the reigns on the sort of dodgy deallings and spin New/Old/NearlyNew/SameOld Labour had, under Bliar, come to believe they could get away with ad infinitum.

If all we get out of the next election is a new government who are under massive scrutiny and therefore try a bit harder that'll be enough justification to have got shot of Brown and his useless cohorts. We know what they're about and giving them another mandate by default would be the worst possible message to send them and would simply be rewarded with yet more lies, spin, dithering and ineptitude.

How bad a job Ken did or didn't do will no doubt become clearer with the results of the various enquiries and revelations which will follow his tenure. Yes he did do some good things but for me he was little more than London's Derek Hatton and will probably emulate his socialist soulmate with a lucrative career in the media, writing books and public speaking.

Oh and as I write I'm hearing Brown making yet more excuses for the massive mess he's created and claiming the election results were all about their failure to adequately get across their message. Yet more self-denial from a man who should serve as the dictionary definition of that term! It isn't the message which is to blame it's his policy and abject failure to govern!

!

I don't think Ken Livingston had anything near the scandals that have been hitting Labour (Cash for Honors etc). Most of the charges have been small and not really substantial. I don't see many enquiries taking place into them, as for revelations we can never be sure but I don't see many of those coming.

Personally a lot of people see Ken as arrogant and very left-wing but as Mayor he was very good at distancing himself from them when he had to make polices. He really did do what he thought was good for London and as I think I have made clear, I think he was successful.

Why is it that people need to follow certain Daily Mail commentators on referring to Ken as "red Ken", I mean he has hardly been "red" in his running of London, its normally the Littlejohn brigade who portray him in this way, including that fair-minded commentator Melanie Phillips. Given the choice I would rather be red than a bigot.

As regards the congestion charge, and business's suffering huge losses I don't hear of Boris rescinding it, and of course things were great before, traffic moving at 1890 speeds. Of course Ken wasn't perfect, but on the whole he did a good job, lets see if Boris can say the same in 4 years without his media minders and Lynton Crosby orchestrating his every move.

Ive just noticed we have cross posted Osem, Id like to make it clear I'm referring to Littlejohn and Phillips in my bigot remark, not anyone on CF.;)

Its an old insult from the 80s designed to "frighten" middle class voters by the Daily Mail, its a pretty low jibe on their part but what else would you expect of them.!

That Nazi jibe is a total non story, a journalist who follows you about at 1 in the morning hassling you, any fair minded person knows full well he used that remark as a jibe at the journalists behavior, not at his religion.

If that chap was behaving like a concentration camp guard and Ken said it to him before he mentioned his ancestory IIRC why shouldn't he be challanged over it? Perhaps Ken shouldn't have said it to him again but then perhaps the journalist should have shut up and looked at his attitude rather than smelling a story

He called him that before he knew he was Jewish, It's just that Ken refused to apologize saying that he didn't see why he should retract his remark just because he found out the reporter was Jewish. He properly should have said sorry but it was hardly anti-Semitic

I agree that being a buffoon helped Boris rather than hinder him, I mean it certainly was not his policies that got him elected

If we're talking about their anti-islamic/anti-asian/anti-african views then, No, Not everyone thinks that behind closed doors, that's simply what racists say to convince themselves they are not in the minority and that they are right.

Elections are private, yet it's still quite a minority who chooses to vote BNP. So the vast majority do not agree with them in private.

The story isn't the point - the point is that the Mayor of London, especially one who spent so much of his time supposedly fighting racist and intolerant behaviour could stoop so low. He didn't even apologise after the event - what sort of example was that to set? If you want an example of bigotry you need not look much further than Red Ken.

OK...... course not ;)

Here is an interview (18th April 2008) with Dickie Barnbrook, with some interesting comments / freudian slips (especially the one about non-indigenous Britains being "second-rate, er, second-element British" (about 3:30 onwards)), and the bit about him not being racist "my brother is married to an Afro-Caribbean - does it bother me? No, that's his choice. Would it be my choice? No" (4:30 onwards).

Most people - we are getting a little self-deluded, trev.

The BNP got approx 3% nationwide, just over 5% in the London Assembly elections - not even the most optimistic buffoon could, by any stretch of the imagination, call that amount "most".

When in doubt, use facts.;)

Could you explain to me the interpretation of 4-5% of the vote then? (which of course overstates it since BNP voters are more likely to vote)

Actually the London seat was given on the basis of a large enough share of the vote, the seats are given out that way. So while they never got a majority in any one area their small minorities were enough.

Do you actually have any concept how the election worked?

Under the Transferable Vote system, if a party got >5% of the votes, it got a seat on the Assembly - the BNP got 5.3%, so it got a seat. 5.3% isn't "most" - 94.7% who didn't vote for the BNP is "most". :D

Exactly, papa - the joys of democracy.

But when one of our posters (not you) tries to translate 5.3% into "most", alarm bells ring.

RizzyKing 04-05-2008 16:20

Re: Boris Johnson wins London mayoral race

Much as i dislike it and don't really want to acknowledge it the BNP is getting more support. Now we can either accept that and then move onto the problem that gains them support or we can adopt the policy some on here suggest label all supporters as brainless ignorant morons and stick our heads back in the sand. Whether it is true or a misconception there is a growing problem with immigration and how it is viewed by people in the UK.

Something does have to be done to try and solve that preventing groups like the BNP getting support. As to the point "are people more or less racist then before", no they are not BUT more people then ever before are concerned about immigration and do have legitimate fears about immigration. I note it is usually those in the professional occupations that keep saying there is no problem but unskilled labourers in this country do have a problem and a lot of them have lost their jobs because some immigrants will work for a lot less money.

You can't keep ignoring things like that because it doesn't suit your argument it is happening and it is hurting a lot of people in the UK at a time when all other bills are increasing. Lets sort the problem and stop the likes of the BNP and any other far right bunch of headcases appearing to offer a solution that would do more damage then good.

Re: Boris Johnson wins London mayoral race

The London elections using a form of Proportional representation so smaller parties can get seats without ever having to win a area. So 5% is enough to win a seat, however in a general a party needs to get a majority of a consistency and thus it becomes much harder for smaller parties to enter parliament

Hugh 04-05-2008 16:25

Re: Boris Johnson wins London mayoral race

RK, understand what you are saying, but the amount of additional support they are getting is minimal, but widely reported.

In the recent council elections, they gained 13 seats and lost 3, out of a total of 4000 (approx) seats fought.

This means they increased by 10 out 4000, which is 0.25% - I worry about their policies, but not about the fact they will be taking over the councils soon.
