It's good to see that Virgin Media can be proactive about the illegal use of equipment. It's just a pity that these arrests aren't publicised more. I shall be very surprised if any of the national daily's bother to pick up on the story.

That was quick work..you were only asking if you should report them two days ago..:)

Mind I note this from that article.

Quote:

A spokesperson for Virgin Media said: "We have been investigating this for just under a year through our in-house security team, who include a lot of ex-police officers.

Sounds like they caught out the suppliers of boxes rather than the users, also...

Re: Illegal Box Users Arrested

Surely tip offs would still come in to the investigating team whilst an investigation was in progress. May be a late piece of information could be the final piece of a jig saw. Don 1 asked what we would do a day before the raids were made so I for one am not going to start questioning his integrity.

What ever the sequence of events action has been taken and it looks as though 200 of the illegally modified boxes have been kept out of circulation.

Gotta love the local rag:

Quote:

A resident on Assheton Road, who did not want to be named, said: "There were four or five big police vans that turned up and raided two houses.

"I saw them taking lots of things out in boxes. They were there quite a while."
Quote:

An eyewitness from Mill Hill Private Hire, which operates from the industrial unit next door to the one raided, said: "There were lots of police and they took a lot of stuff out.
The local perspective really does make you think about these issues :)

I don't understand some of the folks on here, why are so many people giving the op grief he's picked up on something illegal and gone off and reported it.

Too many people sit and moan about what a horrible world we live in and how societies falling apart yet when they have the opportunity to do something about it sit back and do sod all. I've no desire to resurrect the original thread on this though so I'll just say well done, every contribution helps.

All-in-all this proves that reporting illegal activity can support an investigation. It may take weeks or months for something to be done, but that is the normal process of events when collecting information that can lead to arrests.

Nice one.

And between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm one person was shot in the head in a seemingly targeted attack, two women were mugged of their pensions, five houses were burgled.
Just proves they have nothing better to do.
What will happen when they go to court? they cannot even jail people for long enough for murder.

oxymoron - "legal" crime; is that like "celibate" sex?

Or did you mean the so-called "white-collar" crimes.

Bonuses are not a crime, they are part of a contract - and expenses are paid in reimbursement of money paid out whilst carrying out duties on behalf of a business; if you/one fraudulently claims expenses, that is usually gross misconduct (a sacking offence) and you/one can also be prosecuted

Heh, are you taking credit for this, or just saying it started raining after you danced, so to speak? ;)

These are clearly dealers, who got caught with 100s of boxes. There will almost certainly be no prosecution of individual users as a result of this, and it's obviously part of an on-going campaign by Virgin to clamp down on the sale of boxes, and there have been other such arrests in recent weeks both in the UK and Ireland.

It was very strongly implied by don_1 in the first post of this thread that his actions were at least partially responsible for these arrests. His original complaint seemed to be about an individual cable "thief", not dealers, which is what these arrests are targeted at. He also neglected to mention if any action had been taken against the person he supposedly turned in.
