there are lots of random sites i cant connect when searching on google using firefox IE and safari, overclockers main page wont load overclockers forum wont load speed test wont load and ftps will log in but wont list any directorys and just hangs i had a problem with ebay never loading a few months back and a fresh intstall solved it but i have 3 pc on my network and every pc is not working on these sites and ftps using both cable modem and router any suggestions would be helpful have also disabled kapersky internet security and turned off windows firewall |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
overclockers doesn't respond to pings.
Try connecting to some sites now & come back with one you can't reach. |

Re: DNS problems virgin media
Both work for me.
Try this at a command prompt: ping 69.17.117.207 That's the IP address of speedtest.net |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
ping statistics for 69.17.117.207:
packets:sent=4 Recieved =4, Lost= 0 0% loss) approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: minimum = 178ms, maximum= 183ms average = 180ms will a system restore be worth it? |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
Then yes it looks like a DNS problem.
Try replacing the VM DNS server IPs with: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 If you're not sure how, instructions are here Probably best to choose the router option... |

I wouldn't go as far as a re-install.

cheers thanks for all your help im going to have a mess around with my host files after reading up of it this could be the prob 2
|
Re: DNS problems virgin media
Its not a DNS problem, I live in plymouth too and had EXACTLY the same problem start yesterday.
Initially i put it down to the national problem they were having, phoned support, they said "plug your pc directly in to the modem", I did, worked fine again. Plugged the router back in, no go. You know what fixed it? I lowered my MTU on the router to 1492 from 1500. It works now! i think im phoning support again and making sure i dont get charged, cos it takes the mick (25p a min!) Edit: phoned them back, i wont be charged for the call. |

presuming you were ex-blueyonder, your DNS servers should be 194.117.134.19 <-- blueyonders (still used) 62.31.176.39 <-- virgins but your symptoms seem the same as mine, the sites are "found" as in you get "website found waiting for reply" but nothing else happens. i dont think the DNS is the problem, but i can see you currently have the free ones in. |

Thought it was just me then, also in Plymouth, having random page load probs since last night.
Anyway, just changed the mtu to 1492 via this method and it's running fine now. http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm Although something else I've just noticed is I get a blank page at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/ on both FF2 and IE7 |

Re: DNS problems virgin media
I've been having the same problems since Friday; some sites work OK, but others can't be accessed (eg. I can no longer use megaupload.com, have trouble logging into Yahoo mail etc). I'm on a wireless network.
Relieved that it seems to be a Plymouth-wide problem, though is this something that's likely to resolve itself? (seeing as clearly something Virgin Media have done is causing the problem, rather than my own setup). I'm very reluctant to start messing around with settings I have no understanding of... |

VM Tech Support have acknowledged there's an unidentified problem in the Plymouth area and have reported it as an outage tho' it doesn't seem to have appeared on the Status page yet. Go for a walk, preferably stopping at a decent pub? It won't help get your connection working any quicker but it'll make the time go quicker... :) |

I'm having a fair few problems myself right now, i live in Exeter so will be classed as the same as Plymouth, some of the sites i could not see last night i can see today but others i can't mainly american sites, i have servers based in dallas and atlanta and right now cant get too my atlanta server via web at all, however tracert gets too it fine, vm are currently saying this is a problem on my side. maybe most of the southwest is the same?

Have been having the same problems, stumbled across the forum looking for help/info, but seems it's not just me. I'm in Torquay myself, maybe tis the cornish pixies fighting through to take over the south of Devon hehe. Hope it gets sorted, tis doing my nut in.... Thanks for everyones advice further up, tried it but no joy |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
i personally havent rang up VM as there customer service is terriable and i know they will try and shift the blame to my hardware and pc i know its VM servers also would like to know where the chap who a few posts up said that VM tech have admitted that plymouth/ south west has a problem as on the VM status page there is no problems or maintenance stated?
|
Re: DNS problems virgin media
i'm waiting for a callback from a tech now, perhaps he will be able to shed some light, however currently its over the 30 mins originally quoted, will post an update if the call materializes.

Re: DNS problems virgin media
Nah not a sarcy comment, was on the phone so left it short but sweet :). chased up my call back, and aparently the request did not go through, they advised me to change proxy settings in IE to the blueyonder webcache which seems to solve the problem, however i have requested that a tech still calls me as we shouldnt have to go through a proxy in the first place.
but heres how to do that anyway if you want a temporary fix - (if your using internet explorer...which i dont but here it is) go to tools > internet options then click on connections tab > then LAN settings -- then click on use proxy for your lan and enter http://webcache.blueyonder.co.uk in first box then in port box 8080 > click ok > restart web browser - that should work, just had call back, told me to ring software support @ £1 per min - aweful support. |

Re: DNS problems virgin media
dont click the link, didnt mean to hotlink it, its just the address for proxy to put in internet explorer, just follow the intructions and you should be able to see the websites you currently can't, getting another call back from a manger in a moment, tho all these calls are going to india so i doubt i will get anything sorted, they are just saying its my three computers and my neighbours computer :).
|
Re: DNS problems virgin media
ive used the link in the lan settings web pages still no good, yeah sounds about right yeah it must be all 3 of your pcs and all of my 3 pcs and everybody elses pcs on this thread makes me mad as they always shift the blame to the customers machine when we all know that this is not the case, that why i dont ring up CS as i will lose my head on the phone talking to technical support who no nothing about networks and pcs and have the cheek to also charge 25p per minute.

Well i just did some testing based on my theory and the following 2 servers seem to hate 1500 byte packets
195.188.231.21 195.188.231.13 they will take a max of 1478 with the ping command till they just time out. if you take off any TCP headers and stuff, thats about right to the 1492 theory. I hope somebody can pass on this information in hope itll help. |

Re: DNS problems virgin media
well its nationwide but only certain areas, if you look under their nationwide problems it says nothing, but you select the south west or yorkshire and you get that message.
The problem which effected us seems to be some of their core servers we go through (obviously others too) but its slowly getting fixed :) |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
Perfect.
Thanks so much. Been banging head against a brick wall for days but using the webcache dns sorted everything. It's quick, even quicker than what i had before problems. note for the tech guys mtu is set at 1500 this end. |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
hope ur right that the servers will be fixed as ive noticed no improvement at all, but strange that last night early hours the sites and ftps thats im having problems with worked for about 30 mins then went back to normal and nothing works again ive been so tempeted to do a clean intstall of vista but im holding bck for the time being

Re: DNS problems virgin media
Hi guys, just come across this thread and have been having problems trying to sort my sisters pc for 2 days now.
She is on VM 2mb package and connects directly to her webstar modem. A few days ago sites stopped loading, in particular www.galabingo.co.uk I had a look for her and so far I have: Scanned with Ad-aware and Spybot, search and destroy (this picked up starware and 44 other nasties, all deleted). Powercycled the modem. Clean installed Windows XP. Yet she still had the same problem try to connect to the bingo site. Pinging it returned: Pinging www.galabingo.co.uk [88.81.156.20] with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for 88.81.156.20: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss), Tracert returned: Tracing route to www.galabingo.co.uk [88.81.156.20] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 2704 ms 10 ms 9 ms 10.187.192.1 2 18 ms 12 ms 9 ms 80.235.128.33 3 17 ms 20 ms 19 ms 195.188.231.13 4 17 ms 17 ms 17 ms gfd-bb-a-ge-210-0.inet.ntl.com [195.182.178.129] 5 19 ms 17 ms 15 ms pop-bb-b-so-010-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.138] 6 34 ms 31 ms 31 ms so-7-0-0-dcr1.tsd.cw.net [166.63.211.129] 7 33 ms 54 ms 33 ms guernsey-gw.tsd.cw.net [166.63.211.134] 8 31 ms 34 ms 32 ms g1-2-dr1.gg.cw.net [212.30.0.102] 9 * * * Request timed out. 10 * * * Request timed out. 11 * * * Request timed out. 12 * * * Request timed out. 13 * * * Request timed out. 14 * * * Request timed out. 15 * * * Request timed out. 16 * * * Request timed out. 17 * * * Request timed out. 18 * * * Request timed out. 19 * * * Request timed out. 20 * * * Request timed out. 21 * * * Request timed out. 22 * * * Request timed out. 23 * * * Request timed out. 24 * * * Request timed out. 25 * * * Request timed out. 26 * * * Request timed out. 27 * * * Request timed out. 28 * * * Request timed out. 29 * * * Request timed out. 30 * * * Request timed out. I have her using the proxy server currently, but this has been a right royal pain in the ****, especially as her cd burner isn't working and I had to use her mp3 player to transfer 10gb of data :( Lets hope they sort this soon, as although she has access now, I hate knowing things aren't running as they should. ---------- Post added at 16:31 ---------- Previous post was at 16:30 ---------- Oh, I should of mentioned, this problem affected all browsers and wasn't limited to IE. |

Re: DNS problems virgin media
yes it will be a waste of time unfort, the only thing you can do to your OS which would effect it is get a TCP optimizer of some means and set the MTU to 1492 there. worth a shot, worked for some ;p

Sorted mine by setting mtu to 1492, it was set to 1500.

Yo, registered just to post this.
I live in Exeter, have the exact same problem as you guys are reporting. Just for the record, I had to set both my PC's MTU to 1492 as well as my Netgear router's MTU to clear all my issues since Friday. I can now get everywhere without using the webcache. http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe (to change Windows network card MTU) NB. Be sure to reboot after changing your PC's MTU. HTH |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
well just reset the mtu again using the tcp optimizer and guess what......
SORTED!!!!! all sites working again and ftps listing files again thanks to all the ppl who have contribited to this thread i have posted a link of the program i used to set the mtu to 1492 easy to use no need to use the CMD THANK YOU ALL http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php |

Re: DNS problems virgin media
Hi,
Looks like some of us are having the same problems in the Teesside area as of today. Browsing problem seems to be resolved by setting the proxy to webcache.virginmedia.com - however email services from the same server cannot be accessed - can anyone offer any advice on how to fix pop3 email access as I reckon the two problems are related??? Email can be access fine via webmail... just not via Outlook :( Thanks. |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
Getting the feeling this isn't a new thing or a fixed thing then? I'm in Belfast (East) and since yesterday haven't been able to access any of my 3 own websites (all hosted by the same host on different servers) - can neither access the frontend/backend or emails which is a huge issue for me given I manage these for charities. Interestingly some other people also on VM locally have split access i.e. 2 couldn't and 1 could so makes it very tough to figure it out. I have at least been able to get access using that anonymiser link provided here which at least proves the sites are indeed as live as the host techie kept insisting to me they were (I was beginning to disbelieve him as I figured it had to be their problem not mine), but this thread throws out the prospect of it being down to VM.
I've not yet worked through some of the fixes given here, but hoping VM will sort it out their end instead - just wanted to let anyone else in the area know of my diffs. |

Re: DNS problems virgin media
Thanx for the thoughts on this:
Sites are: www.fmsni.org.uk www.bloomfieldmethodist.co.uk www.kitsandcards.co.uk The blog on Wordpress has now loaded at least so that's something, but I still can't access any of my own sites and with 2 of them requiring constant updating this is a pain. Tried to access the admin section via the anonymouser site but couldn't as login details refused to be accepted so it kept reloading the respective login pages. Not sure if I've put the proxy in the right place, but it's not getting me anywhere either, and I'm tired of rebooting modems and routers to kickstart things. Also not willing to pay 5p a min to have VM tell me they're working on it, so suppose I'll just have to try and be patient and see what happens today perhaps. Just frustrating - any other sites would be bad enough, but for it to be these is a bummer - keep thinking this is VM's new method of "kicking" heavy downloaders (thanks to BBC iPlayer etc) like me :td:  LOL! |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
Yeah I'm in belfast.. Been having problems along with other family memebers that live in the area it started on thursday-friday but only started to bother me on saturday when it wouldn't let me connect to the game servers I play on (or get a worthwile connection to them,Seems they work without the router but I can only stay connected for 10sec before I get alot of lag and get knocked off).
The proxy thing fixed my web browsing though just goes abit slow here and there. |
Re: DNS problems virgin media
Can we confirm both the problems in this thread are now fixed from peoples perspective in those areas, just for my own sanity? :o)
1/ MTU issues in Plymouth. 2/ Seperate network issues in Belfast. Adam. |
SOLVED!! Re: DNS problems virgin media
Apologies - I should have hunted this post down yesterday but yes, at least my own problems are solved and judging by many over on the CableHell Forum, I would suspect the Belfast one has been fully sorted now. It was quite interesting in my case tho as I had a VM tech run through a trace with me, and when it stopped on point 5 (after running through 2 NTL servers) he insisted it showed the signal had "left the building" in the sense that it had left VM routers onwards to the destination so it couldn't possibly be VM that were at fault. But it was highly interesting that not only was the problem suddenly sorted less than 15 minutes later (knew, because I started getting a flood of emails from the 3 sites in question) but when I re-ran the trace, I discovered that the next 2 steps in the trace were still working through VM servers so there you go. Shows they don't know what they don't know sadly these poor guys in Africa, or India or wherever they're based!!
