Re: poor speeds peterborough
I also live in Bretton. I am also on 20mb. I confirm that the speeds are VERY slow tonight and also last night. BUT it always seems to pick up after midnight. Not here during the day to try so can't say what its like then.

Re: poor speeds peterborough
Which ubr are you on? I'm in Werrington, on cpc1-pete5-0-0-custXXX.pete.cable.ntl.com (click on "Connection" at the top of this page to see which one you're on) and speeds aren't too bad tonight.

Re: poor speeds peterborough
I'm in Peterborough (North), and never had any speed problems.

So slow here i cant even get this sites speed test to complete

Re: poor speeds peterborough
I'm on the same as SimpleSimon
cpc3-pete4-0-0-custXXX.pete.cable.ntl.com My download speeds are also really flakey. Ranging anywhere from 5mb to 10mb, but after midnight they are usually a lot better, 15mb upwards. My modem power levels are fine, netstat -a is fine. Tracert's to bbc show some dropped hops now and again. I'm currently in the process of contacting VM support via their newsgroups, they've said there's no utlilization problems on the UBR so far, will have to wait and see what they say about my tracert responses. Will keep you posted. EDIT: Hi These results are a bit unusual. From tests here the UBR is not over utilised or have any network related issues that we can detect here. Your signal levels and power levels are fine and your cable modem is one of the newer ones. Reverse tracerts to your computer do not show any issues 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms . Will update you once he's been. |

Re: poor speeds peterborough
This is tonight's reading
Tue, 01 Apr 2008 19:41:33 GMT Test 1: 1024K took 1906 ms = 537.3 KB/sec, approx 4427 Kbps, 4.32 Mbps Test 2: 1024K took 1297 ms = 789.5 KB/sec, approx 6505 Kbps, 6.35 Mbps Test 3: 1024K took 1969 ms = 520.1 KB/sec, approx 4286 Kbps, 4.19 Mbps Test 4: 2048K took 8843 ms = 231.6 KB/sec, approx 1908 Kbps, 1.86 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 4282 Kbps, 4.18 Mbps Not been around the net for the last couple of days so can't say what it has been like. Think I will try some downloads at random times over the next couple of days and see what I get. Simon |
Re: poor speeds peterborough
Strange, this is what I get off Robin Walker:
Tue, 1 Apr 2008 19:56:24 UTC 1st 128K took 665 ms = 197101 Bytes/sec = approx 1640 kbits/sec 2nd 128K took 729 ms = 179797 Bytes/sec = approx 1496 kbits/sec 3rd 128K took 727 ms = 180292 Bytes/sec = approx 1500 kbits/sec 4th 128K took 776 ms = 168907 Bytes/sec = approx 1405 kbits/sec But using a multithreaded download manager on a microsoft download was pulling down at 1200KB/sec. This is on a wireless laptop, so would think it would be a bit better on a wired PC. Can't trust any speedtesting these days  |

Yep, supposedly 4MB down to around 0.5MB.
Its been like this most weekends for a couple of months now, but CS say there is "no reported fault" in my area. I've tried writing to them now, see if that makes a difference. I'm not holding my breath. |

Re: poor speeds peterborough
In belfast although i'm on 20 megs it drops to around 1 meg every day around 1pm in the afternoon and stays there till after midnight, no point in phoning support as can't make out a word they say, come back NTL......

Re: poor speeds peterborough
there are uk based call centre so you would maybe get through to one of them, or alternatively you could use the virginmedia newsgroups, which there is alreadya advice on the forum on how to set up if you're unsure.
if your getting a poor service due to a vm issue, then try to get it sorted, ecspecially if you losing 19meg of you connection for about half a day. |

Re: poor speeds peterborough
OK - I wrote to VM about poor speeds in Peterborough, especially in the evenings and at weekends. I also asked when Peterborough would be getting the 10MB upgrade.
This is the reply: "Hi Keith Thanks for getting in touch with the Virgin Media Support team. Sorry to hear about your problems with internet speed. As you are connected through the digital box we would need to organise an upgrade for you. To take advantage of your service speed we would need to arrange for a technician to call and install a cable modem for you. If you give us a call on 150 (freephone from a Virgin landline) or 0845 412 0000 (local call rate) one of our advisers will be able to help you. If there's anything else we can help with, please let us know. Kind regards, Abdul Shreef Econtact Support Team Virgin Media" So I called CS and read out the above after trying to explain my problems. The lady - who was extremely polite but extremely difficult to understand - told me that to change my STB to a modem would cost me £30 installation fee. I said, hang on, your web site clearly states that changing from a STB to a modem is free, quote: "Upgrading your set top box It looks like we'll need to swap out your set top box, replacing it with a new cable modem. Give us a call on 0906 212 1111 (or on 150 if you have a Virgin Media phone) and we'll book a time for an engineer to come round and install this for you - free of charge of course." She told me that only applies when Peterborough is upgraded to 10MB - I asked when this would be. She told me June. I asked how I would know. She told me all customers would be contacted either by phone, text or email. I said this still doesn't solve my problems regarding degraded service right now - she told me to call the 25p-a-minute service as this was a technical issue. I said I refuse to pay that rate for a problem that is clearly the fault of VM and not mine. She said to explain that to them and they "might" refund the cost of the call. I'm now going for a little lie down... |
Re: poor speeds peterborough
Hello everyone,
Im a newbie to this site and I have just upgraded from 4 meg to 20 meg, I think it was a mistake as i'm now only getting between 1 meg and 2.3 meg, before I was getting 3.84 meg. Not a happy bunny!! |
Re: poor speeds peterborough
For the last couple of weeks my speeds haven't been too great in PE1. Before they were always rock solid, stable speeds maxing out the connection at all times of day but now on my 20mbit connection I'm not getting downloads above 1.1-1.3mbit (often less). Now I know a lot of people would be happy to reach even those speeds but it's not just the speeds at fault. Webpages load noticeably slower, and sometimes don't load at all. Also I used to be able to browse fine with no problems while downloading, but now I can pretty much browse or download, not do both at the time.
The service status doesn't mention any faults in the area. Does it sound like a fault that can be fixed or do I just have to live with it and hope it sorts itself out? |
Re: poor speeds peterborough
poor speeds ere in pe1 for the last 6 weeks 6 engineers been out told it was ubr problem still waiting
