Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
Classic British marques to be sold off by Ford to an Indian company... :(
Link Hope all the jobs stay here... |
Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
Me too, but I don't think Jaguar as cars will improve. We will wait and see on that.
Would love to hear Clarkson on this one! :p: |

@Cobbydaler - Roll on the next series of Top Gear then... :D :tu: Apparently (slightly o/t) Clarkson is being questioned for speeding and talking on his mobile whilst driving on the M40 (think it was M40). No news reports that I can find to that affect anyway. Would be funny if true. (kind of) |
Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
Should be good for both Jaguar and Land Rover. TATA is well established in the UK so both companies should benefit.Don,t see anything outsourced as they are here already.Corus etc.

Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
The latter end of the entire history of British car Manufacture makes me weep............. all sold off/out. Remember who Ford bought the Jag from?...
Heck we (Coventry/UK) couldn't even assemble Peugeots cheaply enough. (And I admit to owning one. Mumble, mumble. Long story. And it's not on the TG 'cool' board :D.) Depressing. Does Morgan still exist? - I don't know - it's a general, rhetorcial, enquiry.:( Cerberus - the last I heard was that the Rover workers/some of bought the Co? but am happy to be told I'm way behind the times :D |

Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
TATA are one of those conglomerates, like Daewoo, that do just about everything.
Tetley Tea, Chorus Steel, Relience Communications, and vehicles. I would hope their investment in Land Rover and Jaguar would be so that they can learn from their production processes and quality and brign their exisiting operations up to that standard, as opposed to the other way round. But I can't help but fear that you will see most of the components used to build Jags and Land Rovers sourced from India. They will probably still assemble them in the UK, but I fear this will be bad for UK component suppliers to Jaguar and Land Rover. |
Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
Lyons Maid, I think they bought too and they're also involved in IT projects at Virgin Media. It's probably better for Jag to be owned by an actual company that makes things rather than private equity asset strippers. They'll get the parts wherever they can get the required quality, I should think - they're a global company.

Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
I don't think this will bode well for Jaguar.
Jaguar hasn't been very profitable in years. Recently its been kept vaguely afloat by reducing production costs by pillaging it's adopted cousins for parts. Something Tata can't really do as effectively. However, if Tata can bespoke the parts needed and keep production costs down, maybe it can survive. There's one caveat though: I think if they can market Jags to be the luxury sedan for India (as opposed to Mercs and Rollers), with its burgeoning wealth and car growth, then I think that will go a long way to helping too. |
Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
Jag/Landy are at the perfect time for ford to sell them. Both have successful new models,
The freelander 2 recieved good reviews and is selling well. The Jag XK and XKR have hughe waiting lists. To the point an early adopters of the xk auctioned a couple of their cars off when the xkr came out and they sold for significantly more than the original list price. So they actually made money from owning an xk for a while. The XF has also gotten good reviews across the board, not sure how well its selling yet. The problem they've had in recent years is restricted development, engines have been tweaked to meet the ever tightening emissions regs and thats about it, the only new engines have been from ford developing them with someone else ie the 2.7 v6 twin turbo diesel which is a big compromise, Jag wanted a 3l v8, psa wanted a 2.5 v6, so they made a 2.7! Chassis wise they've been restricted too, the XF uses the old s type chassis with a few modifications, its still a steal lump which is not what Jag wanted, they wanted to fit an all aluminium chassis as seen in the XK. However this is coming with the XFR. I hope that TATA will invest the money required in new products, learn how to make a luxury, sporty and off-road cars and not try to immediately start squeezing profits out of them. The first thing they can do though is kill off the X type, thats been hanging on by a thread for sometime |

Re: Jaguar & Land Rover to be bought by Tata
Jag not making a profit is a missed opportunity really. As I said before the new XK has had a large waiting list since not long after release (by long I mean well over a year to wait). Which means demand far exceeds supply, the fact that demand was so high that a used car sold for more than a new one would suggest people are willing to pay far more for the XK.
Perhaps its the X's waste of production line space that is dragging them down, ford themselves are in deep trouble, they are loosing money like there is no tomorrow and this is not going to change any time soon (pensions / welfare in usa are the biggest issue) selling off there assets is only going to buy them time. Reading the beeb from last year, Q1'07 the PAG (was Aston, Jag, Landy and Volvo) made $400m in pre-tax profit. |
