fed up with vista

Hi everyone,

I am fed up with Vista, or at least I think I am. I have been used to XP, without any problems, even with Norton 360( no comments please). I now have a laptop running Vista Home premium, and I have been looking at hotels to book a holiday, but Windows won't let me view virtual tours. I have disabled several things in security regarding control x without any joy. I am a dumbo when it comes to computers, so can anyone offer advice on how to solve this problem without putting my computer at risk.

Regards Flip

Hi Zinglebarb,

Re: fed up with vista

Hi Zinglebarb,
Thanks for your suggestions, but I have logged on to Google flash player sites, and all I seem to see are, how to cure flash player problems. My computer knowledge is very basic, so I don't want cause myself any more problems. I've looked up what I want on my old computer. Thanks once again.

Re: fed up with vista

What Zingle meant is find the flash installer site using google(i think).

Doing this myself took me to: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...ShockwaveFlash

Are you running an account with admin powers ?

zing_deleted 24-03-2008 13:01

Re: fed up with vista

can you post a link to one of the problem sites

Re: fed up with vista

This may just be a case of the wrong button being hit at the wrong time, have you tried resetting IE7 security options back to default?

flip63 24-03-2008 15:07

Re: fed up with vista

Hi Paul,
Security was set to default, , the computer is virtually out of the box, but I have since tried the lowest settings for Internet, local etc. Under these settings it still says "unsigned active x controls will not be downloaded " don't know if this is relevant. What's admin powers by the way.
Flip

zing_deleted 24-03-2008 16:01

Re: fed up with vista

Ok unsigned active x could be dodgy if you want to risk it goto tools internet options security and select custom levels scroll down to unsugned active x and select prompt if available apply it close ie and try again

flip63 24-03-2008 17:05

Re: fed up with vista

no joy, windows is still blocking because it can't verify publisher, and i can't overide it, keeps coming back with the same message, although it allows me to go through the process, but comes up with the same message at the end ( as above )

zing_deleted 24-03-2008 17:13

Re: fed up with vista

I user account control on? does the screen go dark and you have to say ok to do anything

flip63 24-03-2008 17:57

Re: fed up with vista

user account on, click virtual tour, blank window with red x, bar at top, message, int. exp. stopped this site from installing active x, click option, click install active x, window titled (user account control ) needs permission, click continue, window (int. exp. add on security warning) windows has blocked this software because it can't verify publisher, click ok, back to blank window with red x.
no dark screen.

Re: fed up with vista

find user accounts in the control panle and look ti make sure ur account is a admin account and not limited altho for the time been try and make another account with admin rights and see if that works

flip63 24-03-2008 18:29

Re: fed up with vista

no joy, same story, is it best to enable uac again now

Tightscot 24-03-2008 19:47

Re: fed up with vista

can enable uac now if you like... one other thing you could try is to run a system file check - this will confirm that the original vista files are all ok...

System file check is run from a command prompt, but you'll need to be running as an administrator... do the following:

Click Start, type cmd into the Start/Search box, right-click cmd.exe in the list above and select 'Run as Administrator'.

Then type in sfc /scannow and then hit return

the system file check will run - it may ask for the Vista installation cd, so make sure that is in the cd drive...

Once its completed, reboot the pc and try again...

Re: fed up with vista

click win key and r to run as admin

Tried Tightscott & Zinglebarbs suggestions. all I am getting is a black screen with
microsoft windows (version 6.0. 6000)
copyright (c) 2006 microsoft corporation, all rights reserved
c:\user\------>

No cmd .exe

zing_deleted 24-03-2008 20:32

Re: fed up with vista

ok reboot pc once your past boot before vista starts press the F8 key this should give you the option of safe mode. Take that and log in as administator. Goto control panel users and change your user to administator if it isnt already if it is then create a new admin account and reboot pc. Log into admin and try again

Click the 'Go Advanced' button next to 'Post Quick Reply' and scroll down a bit. Click the button called 'Manage Attachments' and you'll see 3 boxes with 3 buttons called 'Browse'. Click the first Browse button, find the image file on your PC, click Upload.

Then you can close the Attachment form. You'll need to type something in the post text box as well (as you normally would for a reply).

Re: fed up with vista

If the pc is supposed to work properly 'out of the box' but it doesn't, then take it back to where you bought it and they should be able to fix the problem free of charge.

The other solution you might like to think about - install XP on your new pc. You are used to XP, so why spend all this time trying to learn everything again?

'Installing XP' is not as straight forward as chucking the cd in and running the install process - drivers are likely to be the biggest cause of grief for the average user.

@ Flip - when you get the black screen with "c:\user\------>" type in
sfc /scannow

this should do the system file check for you....

Re: fed up with vista

I have trouble constantly with messages telling me to install flash, I can get so far with the installation and then it just stops. I've downloaded all the so called fixes for Vista but nothing seems to work. I don't think there was a problem before SP1, at least I didn't notice it. I will be interested to know if anyone can find a fix. I'm running a Tosh satellite p200 2 gb ram

Apart from this I'm happy with the new download, things improved a lot when I added another gb memory.

Re: fed up with vista

Also why pay a lot of money for a Vista run laptop, and then spend more money installing XP, after all isn't Vista supposed to be the "one to have" operating system for the next few years. I don't seem to be the only one having problems, most of the review sites I have looked at don't give very positive findings showing Vista to be at least 8% slower than XP, SP1 hasn't improved it a great deal, and has in fact caused problems for some people. I have also had problems with updates, having lost dvd drive, this was sorted by Acer technical, and I am waiting to speak to them at the moment about present problem. Microsoft wanted £40 + vat for the privilege.

Thanks Tightscot, I've run scan now, says 98% complete, found corrupt file, wasn't able to fix.

Open notepad, and go to File > Open and paste in that path " c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log" it will open it for you in Notepad, and will allow you to read through the file.

Done that Druchii, but a list of thousands, and I don't know what to look for, I'm out of my depth. most displayed seem to be -partial install status testing package

self update

Hi Tightscott, you folks are posting quicker than I'm trying suggestions, and posting back, so if I'm out of sequence, please excuse. I'll have another look, be back in about a month.

assuming the log file is opening with notepad, try searching for the phrase 'cannot repair' - use ctrl & f to open the find options...
