New gaming graphic card DX10 required

Hi all.

Right got my Q6660 Corsair Xms2 and Abit Ip35pro and time to think about graphics.

I have a Seasonic S12 600 power unit, and I have my eyes on a 8800GFX, since I would like this card sooner than later since my X1950 pro 512MB is really bogging me down at the moment.

I have my eyes on.

Any thoughts?

Please note I will ONLY buy from SCAN as they are local to me and I can just pop over to get what I need using Q-Collect.

How much money u got to spend? :D and perhaps if you wanna get some hardcore graphics you should think on SLi or Crossfire, that card is brill though if you can afford it... ultra version just slightly topping it but thats currently one of the best cards (single card setups) u can buy :)

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=778108 you could always go mad and buy a GX2

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

they do look bey tasty but abit pricey at the moment the only real advantage for going to a gtx, that i can think of now is triple sli if you just want a single setup then yeah it is good but a gts will be just as good not going, to notice allot of difference really imo. really it depends on what sort of games you want to play if, your just gonna play cod 4 or wow or something along those lines then a gt might be a better choice and then saves you some cash. if you want to play crysis and the far cry 2 when released then yes a gtx or gts in sli is what you are going to need as crysis is very demanding of all components in your pc, and i can imagine far cry 2 is going to be allot more demanding. i am running 2x evga 8800gt's total of 1024mb video memory between the 2 and that only allows me to play crysis on high are these are, the latest versions of the gts's even have a pci-e 2.0 board so i am getting everything out of the cards. personally i would go for 2 gts's or 2 gtx's if you have the cash if not see if, you can find a comparison chart between the gtx's and the gts's see which you think is gonna be better for what you want it to do.

I was happy with how Crysis looked on my single 8800GTS old model . I was toying with the idea of 2 3870's but im not gonna when I game im to busy to notice a few jaggies

make sure it is DX10.1 if they are out yet ;)

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

I believe that limits you to the 3800's

keithwalton 22-03-2008 14:40

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

3870's may not be a match for 8800 in terms of single card performance (8800 is a good solid card there is a single core 9800 coming in a few weeks) but in terms of performance/price they are a good deal.

you can get a 512mb 3870 (full speed jobby) for £115 and i think this price is about to come down further, the only quicker amd card is the 3870x2 and thats nearer £300.

With a P35 board i believe you can run crossfire

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

if i remember right there are only the nvidia chipset boards for intel that do sli, while ati cards are cheap when you look at ati cards ie there top of the line models they only just loose out to nvidia's lowest 8800gt's. the 8800's are the best cards to go for if it's hardcore gaming it's got to be sli, or spend the money on a 9800 x2 card although custom pc mag reckon that the drivers are poor for them at the moment. but then they also say that my new mobo is c*** but everywhere else i have looked cant rate it high enough. here are my offers for you.

now if i had the cash id have to of the bottom ones but im greedy i would recommend the top one or 2 of them in sli you wont be sorry, gaming wise my gts's are amazing cod 4 fps never really below 200 and half life 2 is never below 300

My board is the IP35 Pro from Abit, have looked at the GX2 and sorely tempted but I feel with having to decorate and everything else I am so far looking at perhaps a EVGA 8800GT from Scan.co.uk for £140 delivered.

Missues has given £250 to it, because I keep going on about it.

Persistance pays guys!.

Whats best for 250notes.

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

Have you considered a 9600GT? Beats the 8800GT comfortably and an MSI unit with 1Gb onboard retails from Scan for £155. Rest of spec is close to the 8800GTX - faster GPU but slower mem bitrate, fewer stream/pipes but I think the extra RAM and lower price more than compensate for that.
Take the £250 from the missus and pocket the change towards a game or 2 ;)

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

what what? 9600 GT beats a 8800GT?? evidence of this please. I know the new 9000 series have opened up a couple of extra pipes but they are the same G92 core. 1 Gig of ram is over kill .
The 8800 gtx is on offer in a few places in a few flavours for 210 quid this will urinate over the GT of both figures. Please if you want higher end GFX its my belief you discard the 9600GT as an option

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

I know Zingle the 9600GT seems to be getting automatic approval of being a god send just by being a 9 series card.

So far its the 8800GTX, would my Seasonic S12 be okay powering it? 600watts 2x12v rails 18ampre on each?

You should be

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

Great, is this true that the 8800GT the £200 version can match a GTX? got someone banging on in my WLM, that a top end OC'd 8800GT is superior to the GTX.

I doubt this is possible.

zing_deleted 25-03-2008 21:02

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

tell him to show you benchmark proof

looks like it might be close but an OC GTX would get the edge back

damien c 25-03-2008 21:05

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

a top end gt thats oc'd will beat a gtx in certain things, but better of with a gtx or a gts rather than a gt as you can get gts's for about £220, and they are basically as close to a gtx as you can get without owning a gtx.

zing_deleted 25-03-2008 21:13

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

you can get GTX cards for 220 or less

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=56&subcat=877

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=548066 this one looks clocked and its still only 211 quid

damien c 25-03-2008 21:23

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

i will correct myself there are no gts's at over £200
there is however this one that i think would give a gtx a run for it's money

The second one in your link Zingle is what I plan on getting.

My rig now

3GHZ OC'd Q6600
Abit Ip35 pro
4GB Corsair XMS2 800mhz 2.1v
250GB HD * on way out may change for a 350gb spinpoint*

All on a Seasonic S12 600.

I am worried it won't handle the might of a GTX.

zing_deleted 25-03-2008 23:23

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

if it dont buy a better one lol it should manage my 580 wat runs 5 hdds 3 optical a Q6600 mobo and a GTS

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

So far I am sold to the GTX, for that little more performance it seems worth the money.

While I see the GT is a good card, the single slot cooling worries me, and the fact it has less pipelines, while it's speeds are damn good, as are the GTS's clocks and pipelines the GTX is undoubtably the daddy of them all, and probally the card I want to put in this rig.

damien c 27-03-2008 21:02

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

i use the gts's because they are pci-e 2.0 and so is my mobo so one gts on a pci-e 2.0 mobo technically should be faster, than a single gtx although for yourself there wouldn't be much point changing your mobo just for, the sake of the gpu where as i chose the pci-e 2.0 mobo when i changed from amd to intel.

AndrewJ 28-03-2008 10:45

Re: New gaming graphic card DX10 required

Well it has come to these two in my mind.

XFX 8800GTX

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=548066

Gainward 8800GTS

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=719261

Personally I am leaning to the GTX for the extra shaders and pipelines.
