Multiple abortions

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7306246.stm

Apparently some 30 teenage girls a week are attending clinics for their 2nd or even 3rd abortions

Surely this somewhat flies in the face of persistent claims by certain pressure groups that abortions aren't being used as a method of contraception and are always taken seriously by women.

Whilst I agree that abortion should not be seen as an alternative to contraception, nothing in the article quoted supports your first sentence.

It states
The statistics, for 2006, showed nearly 15,000 women were having their third or more abortion, while 54 of those had terminated eight or more pregnancies

and
And of the 54 who had had eight or more abortions, 21 of them were under the age of 30.

In fact, the last but one paragraphs state
She said the figures suggested that most women having repeat abortions fell pregnant as "a result of contraceptive failure", having "completed their family, rather than any recklessness". "The longer you are sexually active, the more likely you are to have an unwanted pregnancy or experience contraceptive failure."

Exactly, the pill, condoms, coil, injection, implant, even vasectomies can still result in pregnancies.

Interesting how the BBC portrayed the statistics regarding the 54 with 8 or more, rather than stating, as suggested by the quote, that 33 were over 30 years old (ie the majority), they try to put it into the reader's mind the idea that they're being used through recklessness by suggesting youngsters are using it so often, leaving the reader (who's generally lazy) to do the maths.

What pressure groups? What claims?

Demand for abortion is higher in countries with poor sex education and an unhealthy attitude to sexual activity in the young. Try focusing attention on fixing those.

I doubt the BBC would twist a story or not report a story that didn't suit their agenda.

Youngsters around here seem to be very reluctant to have abortions. The 80's phase of teenagers getting pregnant, being a meal ticket passed but now we seem to be going full circle again.

I wont flame you, after all your entitled to your opinion.

Personally I believe abortion is fine if the parents either cant or are not willing to bring the child up. A child with parents that dont want it is more likely (note: not guarenteed) to become a drain on society in one way or another and this world is overpopulated enough as it is.

Now I'm wondering whether I'll get flamed. Now wheres that flame retardent suit.:D

Its very easy to terminate any life you just have to press hard enough in the right places only after a human is outside of his/her mothers body it will be murder but while its " under the protection" of the mothers womb its ok to kill the child

they are willing enough to have sex and lets be real the majority are not a slip through from condoms coil or cap or the 1 or 2% chance if using the pill they are people who just do not bother to take precautions. These are the cases the lack of responsability and because they could not be bothered to wear a jacket or take a pill they "choose" to kill something that will become a baby its just wrong

To be honest its all grey areas and as humans we dont deal well with grey areas. When does a foetus become a human in the eyes of the law?

I'm glad I'm not the one having to come up with the law to make that distinction.

well I know for a fact they still terminate after a foetus is viable. A friend of my ex wife gave birth at 22 weeks and the child survived at that time they still terminated at 24 weeks. I do not know if thats still the case

I know a 19yr old who is pregnant, although its not a nice thing for me to say but to be honest the best thing she could do is have an abortion. She is shacked up with a drug taking, drug dealing, car thieving, benfit claiming, piece of ****.

I certainly wouldn't leave him to look after a child.:td:

But the birth of this child could turn the girls life around pull her out of her rut and make her a good life. The child could cure cancer or similar for all we know or even help to bring world peace. All that potential could be squatted out by a simple choice. Of course none of that could happen but the point is if the child is killed before it can even be born then its then capable of nothing

I believe the girl should not have a child until she is in a relationship with someone who is repectable, behaves like a future father should and has demonstrated that they would love and care for a child.

I would lay a fair amount of cash on this guy leaving her within 3 months of the child being born.

Actually that's a bit of an omission on my part - those figures were from a Radio 5 Live news interview I heard regarding this story which was what actually sparked my post in the first place. I just didn't have time to make all that clear when posting as I had to go out.

My own view on abortion is that it's sadly necessary in certain circumstances as already alluded to by others. Quite why, though, in this day and age so many women should need multiple abortions is beyond me. Of course contraceptive failure is a factor but what do they mean by that? A split condom (hardly anyone's fault) or a lack of discipline to take the pill regularly whilst being sexually active (a trifle neglient). In the former case nobody is to blame, not so in the latter in which case any subsequent abortion is surely akin to being a form of contraception of last resort.

BBKing - Groups like these:

Marie Stopes International, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), Brook Advisory Services who don't ever seem to come out openly and acknowledge the misuse of abortion in just the same way as anti-abortion groups seem always to deny the genuine grounds for abortion.

Yes, and we the taxpayer will probably be sponsoring the child for 18 years.

On the other hand she is an attractive and fairly bright teenager, who could meet a guy who wants to work for a living, not scrounge on benefits, sell drugs or steal to feed his drug habit.

If she met such a decent person, a child concieved would be likely to have a much better start in life and not turn out like the **** future father she is now with.

Babies born at 25 weeks have a 50% chance of survival

From 32 weeks onwards, most babies are able to survive with the help of medical Technology [EPICure data]

Outcomes

1 in 10 premature babies will develop a permanent disability such as lung disease, cerebral palsy, blindness or deafness.

50% of premature babies born before the 26th week of gestation are disabled, a quarter severely so. (Fowler GA. Preemie problems: the sobering statistics. US News World Reports 2000; vol 129: pp56).

Of children born before 26 weeks' gestation, results in 241 of the surviving children at six years (early school age) indicate a high level of disability as follows:

* 22% severe disability (defined as cerebral palsy but not walking, low cognitive scores, blindness, profound deafness)
* 24% moderate disability (defined as cerebral palsy but walking, IQ/cognitive scores in the special needs range, lesser degree of visual or hearing impairment)
* 34% mild disability (defined as low IQ/cognitive score, squint, requiring glasses)
* 20% no problems

If your ex-wife's friend's baby is perfectly healthy, then fantastic, she managed to beat the odds, just don't try using her as an argument to suggest that because her baby was ok at 22 weeks, most babies will be.

I've just found this which quotes the source:

Which doesn't say much for the BPAS's ethics at that time.

Lets just add some context shall we?

Quote:

For many women, abortion currently acts as an essential back-up to contraception, necessary to enable them to regulate their fertility and plan their families. Since individuals are expected to plan their families, abortion is now considered by most sections of society as a 'fact of life'. In early pregnancy at least, abortion is viewed by most as preferable to unwanted childbirth.

· In this context, it is inappropriate for abortion to be considered as a problem - rather it is a solution to a problem.

by your own statistics then I put you that some babies are aborted that with the correct medical care could have survived but are left to die .... MURDER

17 out of every 100 abortions performed at 23 weeks could have survived .... MURDER
39 out of every 100 abortions performed at 24 weeks could have survived .... MURDER

Possibly 10 % estimated at your statistics would have suffered no disability so thats 4 or 5 out of every 200 abortions performed at 23 or 24 weeks would have survived with no problems tell me thats not MURDER

Tell me this if I was to kill you just 1 person with no physical or mental problem (apart from acute left wing disease ;)) could I possibly get away without a MURDER charge????

You've forgetting that there is no way of knowing, you're also trying to portray an either or situation, either they die or they're happy healthy productive members of society, ignoring that of those 17 out of 100 which "may" have survived, all but one will suffer disabilities.

Have you been involved in abortion? if so is your conscience clear or does it not plague you some nights do you never wake up in a cold sweat thinking about holding that baby nurturing her/him seeing it grow develop its first steps first words??? all quashed cuz maybe you or your partner thought " im not ready"??

Yes I have been, no it doesn't plague me, why would it?
Does it plague you when you fap one off into a kleenex, or when your partner has her period? Do you wake during the night in a cold sweat wondering what if you hadn't decided not to get pregnant, that stain on the bedsheets would have grown up into a human being, but you chose to prevent that from happened?

It is not easy carrying a baby to term, then breaking the mother/child bond.

Now if only you were.

That bond is the hardest to break, we have a very close family friend who was more or less raped at the age of 15, this was over 20 years ago. Infortunately due to the situation she concealed the pregnancy until it was too late to abort. (Even as a teenager I was first to spot there was`something up with her)

Her family sat down and discussed it sensibly with her and let her make the decision, and she decided that the child should be put up for adoption. She went to hospital to give birth and it was agreed the child would be taken straight away from her.

All went well until a do-gooder nurse decided to take the baby to the mother, the bond could then not be broken and she kept the child. All turned out well, but she had a difficult time and had to be supported by her family.

I still think the bottom line is that children are optional, and no one should conceive a child if they are not able to support it.

You're talking out your backside Zing!
My aunt fell pregnant in the 60's and it turned out her partner was married.
There was no way she could have brought up her son on her own, so gave him up for adoption.
Are you saying that she had no mother/son bond?
Of course she did, but she knew he'd more chance of a better life if he was adopted.
Thankfully he did, unfortunately many babies given up for adoption grow up in childrens homes and many of them never recover psycholigically.
So please, think before you next post.

I am adopted and frequently thank my lucky stars that my "birth mother" did not just decide to have an abortion.

I understand it wouldn't be easy to carry to full term and then give the child away but if the person is not ready to raise a child themselves it should at least be considered, in this day and age I don't think that it is.

Most of us accept why abortion is sometimes sadly necessary even in a first world country with universal access to free contraception however it's still important to ask just why so many abortions are required when it's clear that only a proportion are due to genuine contraceptive failure.

I quoted the last paragraph simply because it related directly to the point of this thread and, contrary to what some people still claim, confirms the view of certain groups/people out there view abortion as just another acceptable form of contraception.

So far nobody has been able to explain why despite the availability of highly effective methods of contraception so many young women seem to get pregnant more than once and then have abortions risking their own long term health, wellbeing and even fertility by so doing.

Most of us accept why abortion is sometimes sadly necessary even in a first world country with universal access to free contraception however it's still important to ask just why so many abortions are required when it's clear that only a proportion are due to genuine contraceptive failure.

I quoted the last paragraph simply because it related directly to the point of this thread and contrary to what some people still claim, confirms the view of some groups/people out there view abortion as just another acceptable form of contraception.

So far nobody has been able to explain why despite the availability of highly effective methods of contraception so many young women seem to get pregnant more than once and then have abortions.

I added my quote to put yours into context, otherwise people might get the idea that they were suggesting abortion as primary contraception (as you appear to be suggesting), when they're actually saying that it's being used as a backup when primary has failed.

"Highly effective" is not 100%, condoms break, or slip off. The pill isn't always effective, the morning after pills don't always work, even vasectomies can result in pregnancies.

As for their health, did you actually read the page you linked to?

Yes - did you read what I wrote? I wrote that they're putting their health at risk - I did not suggest that risk was serious, moderate or negligible since I don't think anyone can yet categorically say which is true.

I've already alluded to the fact that contraception isn't foolproof more than once but but how many time is a teenage girl going to be the victim of a split condom, failed pill etc. as compared to the number who are simply just careless, don't fully appreciate the repercussions of what they're doing and then opt for an abortion possibly even not really understanding at the outset what's involved in that?

The issue is why are so many young women particualry having repeat abortions. It can't all be down to genuine contraceptive failure so in those cases where it isn't, surely the abortion process can be said to be being used as just another form of contraception.

Frankly I'd rather live in a society in which abortion is only used as a method of last resort NOT an alternative for those who've been careless or even negligent. That having been said, I don't expect it's ever going to be possible.

Fewer under 30's are having repeat abortions than over 30's though.
Given how traumatic the abortion process can be (many women find just going to a gynocologist traumatic), do you really think women would prefer to go through that more than once rather than take a pill each day or use a condom?

That's part of the point I'm making about the use/misuse of abortion amongst some women. Those who've thought it all through no I am certain they don't do it lightly. But I do think there's a fair proportion of women (mainly younger) who indulge in unprotected sex without thinking much about anything - including HIV/STD's, the risk of pregnancy or indeed to proper use of the contraceptive pill. For these women possibly the thought (misconception even, pardon the pun) that there's always an abortion if the worst happens ("but of course it won't happen to me will it") is a factor in their rather reckless behaviour.

Of course she did, but she knew he'd more chance of a better life if he was adopted.

It's rude to use 'some people' as part of your argument. If you can't address people by name don't expect a reasoned answer. Likewise, setting up possible straw men by referring to 'some groups' falls under the same banner.

However, the substantive point that abortion is the extreme end of a spectrum of family planning mechanisms is perfectly valid from a technical standpoint (in terms of stopping people having babies), so if you really want to reduce abortions, increase the effectiveness of the others, by making them more freely available, having better education, research etc. Importing US anti-abortion drivel will have precisely the opposite effect, since it stems entirely from theologically-driven considerations where male control over female sexuality is the ultimate driver, rather than rational considerations of public health and, being an ideology, has substantial fundamental problems when applied to the real world. Just say no.

By the way, anyone quoting 'Mad' Nadine Dorries MP is automatically deemed to have lost the argument, by the way - this is highly humorous:

This is the calibre of person we're dealing with here.

They'd risk a lot more if abortion wasn't legally available. But hey, the unspoken subtext of anti-abortion campaigns (imported from the hate-filled US right) is that they're just sluts and therefore expendable, won't someone please think of the poor ickle foetuses? I've made up my mind that real, living human beings are more important - gasp, shock horror, moral relativism. Guilty as charged, but it's better than rank hypocrisy any day. Im certainly not saying I hate people who have abortions. I disagree with their stance on the the subject and I certainly feel if a man and a woman have consensual sex and do not take precautions then then should stand by there choice instead of cop out and have an abortion. Sexual morality is not a bad thing imo. I do not truly know what to think on the subject of rape victims falling pregnant I do understand the wish to get it out of her body and if it happened to a partner of mine I would support her wish even though id be unsure about how I truly felt. The same would be said for the severly disabled. But I will never agree thats its right for a healthy woman to give up a healthy baby for choice

Here's a question (because I'd like to know your opinion):

Some forms of contraception* prevent the implantation of a fertilised egg. This is, in effect, a very early termination of pregnancy. Do you also disagree with this?

* coil, morning-after pill

zing_deleted 21-03-2008 11:33

Re: Multiple abortions

Once the egg is fertilized its lifespan would lead to a human if it is allowed to continue so I am against it

The other point of course is if your not in a long term relationship with someone you can trust they do nothing to prevent STIs

Sexual morality imo is at an all time low. People go out meet in a pub or club and sleep together that night . Some do not take precautions this is just plain wrong

Possibly the most sensible thing which has been said in this thread. Thing is though, there are many many people who see low levels of sexual morality as very low on their list of priorities.

Zinglebarb is correct and so are you with your comment, but we must not mix up love and sex.

Sexual morality is very low on my list of priorities when I am not in a serious relationship. when I was not in a serious relationship I would go out most weekends and pick up a woman, I always used condoms and on one occasion I actually walked away from a woman. I had consumed alcohol and offered to take her home but still had the sense to walk away because the condom machine was empty.

Abortion should be dealt with on an individual basis, there's no right or wrong decision.

Rude ? I don't think so at all. Some people are in denial about HIV/AIDS but I don't have to name Tabo Mbeki and his Health Minister to make that point or get a reasoned answer do I? If so, every time we have any form of debate on here we're all going to have to name all those we're referring to and you'll have to stop using the general term 'the Tabloids' when you're referring to particular newspapers you despise.

I used the term 'some people' because in addition to groups like those I referred to there are no doubt others who are in denial about how some people misuse abortion either because they're plain stupid or because it doesn't suit their argument to accept the fact.

As for those arguing against abortion per se (who you haven't identifed in your post BTW) - please don't include me in their numbers. I've made it quite clear where I stand and I think what's required is to get to the root of why, despite all the advice, contraception etc. freely available out there, so many people are having multiple abortions.

* awaiting your exhaustive list of hate filled anti abortion groups  (not that it will add to your point).

Well you've never met 99.999% of the World's population and you don't have to have done so to know that there are some people out there who have the strangest attitudes to all sorts of things, some who are stupid and some who are just plain reckless.

I suspect that if you asked some of these young women if they think like that about abortion when they're in a more reflective mood they'd confirm what you're saying. However, if you did so after, for example, they'd been binge drinking all evening you'd probably get a very different answer. You'd also get a different answer from those who knew the risks and went ahead with unprotected sex on the basis that pregnancy simply wouldn't happen to them or who were pressurised into it by their peers and/or partners.

The people I'm referring to and worried about are not those sensible women who make a reasoned choice in difficult circumstances but those who get themselves into the situation through one mistake or another and then have to resort to abortion, all too often more than once. I'd really rather they never got into that sad position once let alone several times and being in denial about the existence of this proportion of women isn't doing anything to help them.

You are entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to disagree. I will however ask one thing: What is best, aborting a baby or bringing one up in a life of poverty? If you can barely afford to feed yourself, how can you affor to feed and clothe a child for 18 years?

I know that in an ideal world we would all use contraception, which would work 100% of the time. Sadly, this world is not perfect. People sometimes don't use contraception, or it fails (my friend's baby was concieved thanks largely to a split condom).

And yes, I know that family or friends should help, but not everyone is lucky enough to have a family or friends that are willing (or able) to do that.

I don't believe abortion is an easy option. Nor do I believe it should be. However, I do believe in some cases, it is a lot easier than the alternative.

I also think that we (as a society) need to look at ways we can help women who feel they need to have abortions rather than judging them when they have them.

However, if someone is having multiple abortions without medical reasons, then we need to ask why.

It's not necessarily just a problem with morality. While refusing to have sex is an excellent way to prevent pregnancy and most STDs, simply remembering to use a condom can be a very effective way to prevent STDs and pregnancy (unless it fails, as above).

Good point. Women who are desperate enough will have an abortion, regardless of whether it is legal,or,in some cases, safe or not.

How many women lost their lives in the 40s, 50s or 60s because of illegal abortions?

In this country no one is actually poor. In Africa or other countries yes but not here. IMO a life in poverty is better than no life at all. But that depends of the definition of poor . We have social security and housing benefits yes people still struggle but its not like some places in the world. I would prefer a more sexually moral society where precautions are taken and unwanted pregnancies reduced massively because of this. As stated the pill and condoms are 99% effective so thats 99 out of 100 less abortions if everyone was responsable

Harldy, had I said "So you think forced contraceptives should be administrered then?" you may have a point, but you'll noticed I didn't say anything of the sort, I asked a question, an open one with the use of "perhaps?"

Given that people are inherently not responsible, if you are to be believed that multiple abortions are being performed not (as those involved report) on people who are using contraception already, but as a form of primary contraception by women who can't be bothered to use the pill or condoms, then should the responsibility be taken out of their irresponsible hands?

Or how can we make them more responsible? (an ideal solution I agree)

I suspect the only way we could do that is section them. Not a good solution at all.

I think that one thing the government and/or media could do is increase the amount of coverage the subject gets on TV. Hell, the best programmes on TV covering sex education (in fact the only long running ones), ITV's "The Good Sex Guide" and "The Good Sex Guide Late" got cancelled after a couple of years.

AIDS hasn't gone away, but if you looked at the media coverage it (and other STDs) get in this country, you could be forgiven for thinking it has.

So you cross the road and get run over, a dangerous activity crossing the road, hundreds die from it every year, but in your book, you should be left to your own devices because after all, you CHOSE to cross the road right?

Personally, the thought of a scared woman sticking a wire coathanger up herself in the bath doing unknown damage simply because of people with views like yourself Zing, is completely appauling.
Not to mention that some of the damage could lead to guarenteed miscarriages (so more children dying) in the future.

Unless of course you actually think all these unwanted pregnancies are down to inefficient contraceptive and not just some slapper woman screwing a slapper bloke after a night on the beer and not giving a toss about the consequences cuz they can just arrange a clinic visit

Chin chan china man walking down the strand for a joke have a poke feeling very gland. Chin chan china man couldn't give a rap 6 days later clap clap clap

Ah so those who actually deal with the multiple abortions (remember, the majority of them are from women over 30) are wrong when they say it's where the pill/condom/coil/injection/cap etc has failed, it's just that there are groups of over 30s women giving it out without a care in the world, and going for one abortion isn't a biggie so why not have more, it's easier than the pill after all right?

Did you read the article linked to in the OP?

Quote:

She said the figures suggested that most women having repeat abortions fell pregnant as "a result of contraceptive failure", having "completed their family, rather than any recklessness".

"The longer you are sexually active, the more likely you are to have an unwanted pregnancy or experience contraceptive failure."

Re: Multiple abortions

Lets come back a yard and allow me to challenge your bull plop..

33 out if 54 who had 8 pregnancies were over 30 ok

the report actually states nearly 15,000 women had had over 3
During that year women seeking terminations were most likely to have fallen into the 18-to-24 age category.

So please where is this most are over 30 crap coming from???

Bare in mind these are incomplete figues as it only covers 3 + terminations so you could double or triple the figures or higher so 100,000 terminations.
The labour mp you quote doesnt make sense.
She states

"This is especially true for women over the age of 25 who don't have specialist services in the way teenagers and young women do." She said the figures suggested that most women having repeat abortions fell pregnant as "a result of contraceptive failure", having "completed their family, rather than any recklessness".

But the other figures show most terminations fall in the under 25 range

If they're having 8 abortions then by your own reckoning they must be some super slappers then.

How does women having repeat abortions after contraception has failed them once they've completed their families not make sense to you?
It's relatively easy.
When mummy and daddy have the children they want, they often don't stop making love (I know in some relationships that happens which causes divorce etc especially if mummy isn't getting what she wants from daddy) but they don't want to have more kids. So they use Mr Contraceptive who helps stop mummy getting pregnant. Unfortunately, Mr Contraceptive isn't 100%, and so if you use him lots and lots you increase the chance of him letting you down. Simple really.

or using the wrong contraceptive maybe after a few goes at the clinic they may have learned what they are using isnt working

I wouldnt say super slappers but I may think they are stupid

Also the labour mp says these women have completed their familys . Have they not heard of sterilisation? You gonna come back now and say well that can go wrong as it can but still not that often

Many people, myself included, would not want our partners to be unable to have more children with a new partner should something happen to ourselves, or even if the relationship just broke down.
Therefore sterilisation is not an option.

If a contraceptive is 99% successful, and you have sex 600 times a year, that's 6 times it failed.
Do that over 30 years and that's 180 failures.
How exactly is someone stupid for that?

Re: Multiple abortions

errrrr dude that would require every time it failed to be at the exact right time for fertilisation to result in a pregnancy please stop throwing bull crap figures at me in a lame attempt to dismiss me

If its got to the point they are needing an 8th abortion they seriously need to do something . Are you telling me its ok to have 8 abortions in a life? let alone the possibility that any of these might have a 9th or 10th? no normal person would get into this position

Nothing you do or say is going to make me say your right as im sure nothing I do say will convince you I see no point in further debate with you on this subject

Please read what I write, I said failures, not pregnancies.
8 out of 180 is a pretty small number.

One might say no normal person would find it preferable for women to have to perform their own abortions and risk their lives and those of future children they may want.

Not meaning to get into the argument, but who the f. has sex 600 times a year? That's twice a day (all year) discounting certain erm... periods.
