it is hard to express the effect this man's writing has had on me, over the years - I hope he has found it 'full of stars', at long last - RIP

The man who thought of geostationary satellites ... amongst other things.

His was a great contribution to humankind.

I wonder if they're going to shoot his ashes up in a rocket.

Three in one day...

First Captain Birds Eye, then Anthony Minghella, & now the legendary Arthur C Clarke... :(

A very sad day indeed. Probrably one of the greatest writers of SCI-FI and as mentioned previously a visionary of the 20th\21st century.

There aren't many writers left from the Golden Age of SF...now one less. I remember him alongside Asimov, Heinlein and Sturgeon. Sad he never lived to achieve his ambition to travel in space - but he leaves behind the concept of the geostationary communications satellite. I just hope the next generation will remember his contribution while they're downloading HD-quality movies. :)

Ironic he never patented the concept - he might have ended as one of the world's richest men. Oh well - his work at least will never be forgotten. Perhaps when lunar missions are resumed, someone could erect a monument to him in, say, the Tycho crater. Something in black, with dimensions in the ratio 1:4:9...(if you don't know where that comes from, you haven't read him!)

Sad to hear this news. He has been a part of my life since I discovered Science fiction in my early teens.

My memory of him is of him walking along a beach in Sri Lanka whilst he introduced one of his TV series - Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World -if I remember correctly.

If there is a life after this one then I hope he is either soaring amongst the stars and maybe calling in to visit his asteroid or swimming in his beloved ocean.

Just seen this on the BBC RSS feed, very sad news indeed.

A legendary man that I owe many happy (and thought provoking) hours to.

My favourite lasting thought is that the coincidence that applying a Ceaser shift of 1 to H.A.L gives I.B.M may not have been the coincidence that it seemed :)

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

RIP Arthur.

A Geostationary black slab seems appropriate.

RIP Arthur.

Sequel to 2001 (based on his short story, The Sentinel).

He will be missed - he and Robert Heinlein were my first intro to SF.

Synchronicity, or what?

NASA

"Swift normally detects about two gamma ray bursts per week. But March 19 was a special day. The satellite detected four bursts on that day, which is a Swift record for one day. “Coincidentally, the passing of Arthur C. Clarke the day before seems to have set the universe ablaze with gamma ray bursts,” says Swift science team member Judith Racusin of Penn State University in University Park, Pa."

Strangely enough, ACC wrote a short story called "The Star", where an Earth starship on a mission to investigate the causes of a supernova in a distant galaxy discovers the artifacts of a highly developed civilization, carefully preserved on the only planet that remains in orbit around the supernova. Knowing that all life would be wiped out when their sun flared into a supernova, this race of sentient beings left a record of who they were and what they accomplished.

The pictures, sculptures, music, and other relics of a very human-like race doomed to destruction depress the crew and investigating scientists, who are far from their own homes and lonely. What the narrator has learned but not yet communicated to the others is that the supernova that destroyed this civilization was the Star of Bethlehem, which burned brightly in the sky to herald the birth of Jesus Christ.
