Re: WIndows Vista SP1

open my computer. Press help and about windows. If sp1 isn't there anywhere it isn't installed.

SP1 has not been released to users, but has been released to manufacturers so I don't know if they are putting them on new machines yet.

As suspected I need to uninstall my beta sp1 to install the proper one. Except it won't let me.

Ah well, reinstalling vista next week then :)

Re: WIndows Vista SP1

They always said you have to uninstall the betas. It should allow you to whats it saying?

64 bit sp1 installed hassle free here :)

Re: WIndows Vista SP1

The uninstall option is greyed out.

Does it fix any of the issues like slow startup and the like?

Re: WIndows Vista SP1

I cannot even see the uninstall for the rc1 beta version. Hope when I come to install sp1 that it automatically uninstalls first

Never really had a problem with start up. My machine was never that quick due to finding the multitude of hard discs and raid controllers initialising so the difference would be slight if anything

So far all I've noticed is that doing a tracert in Sam Spade now shows all the hops, not just the last one & an external USB2 disk caddy which didn't work before, now does.

- I'm happy so far ...

There is one, and only one, thing I want to know before I install the damn thing: does it fix that stupid problem re disappearing DVD/CD drives?!

zing_deleted 19-03-2008 00:05

Re: WIndows Vista SP1

never had the problem so dunno . One way to find out and of course everyone should back up first

Re: WIndows Vista SP1

ok.. just finished installing SP1...

And now? trying to establish WTF happened to my ****ing audio!!!

I had every reason to have some niggling doubts............ everything else is ok, however....

nm.. sorted it.. had to kill it in device manager and then have it relook for it and install it - problem solved....

Not bad though, took about an hour for it to install, it rebooted four times and I only wanted to knock the stuffing out of it once... :D

According to the windows vista magazine then yes it does fix this error.

Re: WIndows Vista SP1

Two points to notice now that SP1 has been installed.... (bar from the little driver issue...)
First of all, when you let windows view your pics in its own viewer - there are more options!
Secondly, when using windows movie maker, previously, when trying to do anything with an mp3 file, it threw up an error and refused mp3 format - now? it accepts mp3s....
I havent done much else to determine whats improved - but certainly yes, booting up and shutting down doesn't take forever!! :D

Re: Windows Vista SP1

Installed it no problem.

first impressions are its not broken anything that was working before. However my transfers from my Vista machine to my other machines are still slower than a slow thing from the planet slow.

Now before the vista defenders start blaming my system.

I have run Vista, Xp, Linux and Server2003 on this machine all but Vista work fine with data transfers. I have tried 2 different Network cards in this machine and i have an inbuilt 1 gig network card.

If i transfer say 2 gig from my vista machine to my WHS or to a Linux machine on my network it can take up to 20 minutes to do that. I i transfer from the Linux to the WHS or from a XP laptop to anything other than the vista machine all is fine and the transfer can be finished in 5 Min's tops.

So has Vista SP1 been the fix i needed no, It still leaves Vista as a alpha version operating system. Role on a version of Linux that runs Call Of Duty 4.

Yes, it warns about having to reinstall some drivers on the blog.

I would not say transfers across my network are lightning fast however I do not suffer the problem to the extent you do. My nic is marvel yukon gigabit running to a linksys router. A dvd image takes approx 10 mins so that is quite substantially faster than yours. I have seen 6 images cross in about 40-50 mins as iso smaller files ie vobs do seem to take longer . I understand your pain lol

Zing

That is the same adapter that i have. All my machines connect to a gigabyte switch which is then connect's to a port on the Linksys router running tomato software. All the switching is carried out in the switch with the router only acting as dhcp and Nat for the internet.

I can watch paint dry faster i must admit. I NEVER had any of these problems on XP

Other than the planet slow transfer speeds i find Vista is finally moving forward, You never know it might be as good as XP in a couple of years time

Re: WIndows Vista SP1

I have to admit, some things *have* speeded up some - which is good... :)
Missing icons have reappeared on restart, audio is sweet again (yippee!) and after doing the rounds of plugging usb devices in - no issues at all... :D

In fact, it's running better now than it's ever run!
:D

(thats not to say that some people may have some slight problems)

I ended up (in the end) last night uninstalling the sound card after downloading its drivers and then by letting windows find them again...

Simple thing to do is to back up your current drivers for essential stuff just to be on the safe side :) (usb sticks are cheap enough these days.. and a worthwhile investment) :D
Had I remembered that earlier, I'd have been able to go to bed before 3am......

So yeah, everything here is running sweetly... as it should be doing... :D

and here I was thinking that you knew networking.... the linksys you got is probably only a 10/100 model ;) and even if it goes through the switch the connection is still via the router.....

set it all point to point via the switch and you should be fine. means that you would have to set static and ip's on both pcs and see what happens then mate :)

Does a backup deffos need to be taken to install this? Just last time I tried upgrading, it was a beta release and it deleted some important files which caused the laptop not to load.

I have

All the router does is inject the Internet feed on to the gig switch.

Router > to switch for DHCP and Internet. Then ALL the PC's are connected to the Switch only. Therefor NONE of the data touches the router it just bounces between the ports on the switch.

I have tried just through the switch with no router and it still runs like a Sinclair Spectrum loading pac man from a tape deck

one other point. XP to XP XP to Linux XP to WHS goes like a rocket but Vista to any other goes like a slow thing from the planet slow.

:Yikes:Which issue? I must've missed that.

Oh, well, I backed everything up recently before nuking and reinstalling the entire damn system (which, oddly, didn't fix the problem, unless one or more subsequent updates did it!), so I might just give it a try over the weekend.

I wouldn't upgrade to Vista for the sake of it. I have it on my new laptop, and it looks really nice (It makes OS X look a bit boring). I like it, but functionality wise, I don't think there are substantive improvements over XP. Not enough to shell out for it anyway.
