Severe storm on the way
An "exceptional" storm will hit Britain tonight - with people warned to stay in and avoid unnecessary journeys.
Forecasters say it will be the sort of weather only experienced once every seven years - prompting comparisons with the Great Storm of 1987. Forecasters said the weather system currently forming out in the Atlantic is not an average winter storm and only 30 of a similar force have been recorded since 1821. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...n_page_id=1770 UK regions most at risk: Greater London: 70% South East England: 60% East of England: 60% South West England: 60% Wales: 60% West & East Midlands: 40% North West England: 40% Northern Ireland: 30% Yorkshire & Humber: 20% |

|
Re: Severe storm on the way
It was nice and sunny and now just had some hail.
Hopefully it won't be too bad tonight. |
Re: Severe storm on the way
Nice and sunny here at the moment, but the forecast looks grim. High tide is around 8.00am and the forecast is clear but very windy so I'll be down the sea front with my camera's in the morning.

Re: Severe storm on the way
Have battened down the hatches, still perfectly calm here at the moment (Cornwall).;)
|
Re: Severe storm on the way
Met Office Satellites have it just hitting Ireland at the moment. I think you've got a few more hours.

Oh well so we will miss the bad winds but might get hit by severe snow, the joys :)

Re: Severe storm on the way
I was due to deliver a large canvas tomorrow morning to a client who lives right on the coast at St Annes on Sea. We both agree that it may be prudent not to be carrying a 5ft by 3.5ft canvas in a gale.
I guess I will be going to the coast a bit later in the week. I hope everyone in the red alert areas gets through the storm, high tides and errrr the snow OK. Take care everyone. |

I'm bracing myself for a strong breeze and a few showers, on the basis of the weather reports. Had they forecast a strong breeze and a few showers, I'd be outside now - building an ark.

Would have been better without the double glazing in the way, but I think the spinaker owners would have objected to me breaking it :D The clouds were fantastic, took the shot with auto bracketing and processed as HDR, then tweaked it a little. The drive home was horrendus, really bad rain and a load on lunatics on the M3. Stopped at Fleet services just to let some of the rain blow over. |
Re: Severe storm on the way
appears wales and the south west are getting the worst of it, south east / north west getting the spill over but i expect the south east to get it later on
|
Re: Severe storm on the way
It's been a bit blustery here to say the least :)
|
Re: Severe storm on the way
Might be takeing me kite out soon.:p:

Re: Severe storm on the way
I wouldn't, you'll either get blown away or struck by lightning, this weather is so unpredictable, we've got Sunshine here in Poole atm but with cloud on the horizon, that looks set to end abruptly

Big old roll of thunder overhead but nothing else, just pelting the window with rain and looking really cloudy :(

Re: Severe storm on the way
I drove through the end of a rainbow yesterday, never seen the end of one before :D
Weather is fairly bad here. The thing i want to know is why does a bit of rain and wind suddenly make some people awful drivers? Had several people pull out on me while im going near the limit and their going 45 on a motorway  :) |
Re: Severe storm on the way
Damn! I think there was a power cut during the night and my landline is down.It takes a lot to knock out the VM phone service.:(

Re: Severe storm on the way
What storm? Only a drizzle here, I am amazed to hear that there was rain on the M3/Fleet. The sun is shining too ....
|
Re: Severe storm on the way
Typical, west/central Scotland was blown to hell and back last month, 10,000 people without power for a day or more, and it got one or two mentions after the fact. Southern England is threatened and the BBC treats us to 12 hours of build-up reports, followed up with blow-by-blow (geddit) accounts of each gust and shower.
For the record, it got a little blowy up here around breakfast time, but now all we have is light rain and an attractive blanket of snow on the hilltops. |

Alternating between bright sunshine and horizontal stair rod rain here.Weird!

Re: Severe storm on the way
More like storm in a tea cup. The British media do love a crisis don't they ?
We have no real understanding of what a real storm is,what a real flood is or for that matter, what a real earthquake is. We live in such a dull, boring, grey little country where nothing ever happens and therefore we latch onto any little story and make it a big one so that we can wail and gnash our teeth if our chimney pot gets blown off the roof or something.. |
Re: Severe storm on the way
bbc 2 spent 30 mins off out and about trying to find someone/something that died or hurt its self in the storms after learning about a few fences getting blown down they they went onto to see if the met office had over reacted..
a slow news day and trying to make news up shouldnt be on the bbc :) anyway was windy where i was all night and my palm tree fell down. i put the fella backup so hopefully he will be ok |

Re: Severe storm on the way
last night and in the early hours of the morning here it was very windy but nothing compared to how it was in the late afternoon around 4pm-6pm... the wind was extremely fears and very strong... it actually became so strong for a time people started running into the nearest shops it was quite funny.
it rained very heavy in the late afternoon too. |

The storm did what nothing during, or since, WWII has been able to. A child on a school bus recorded this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywQ8V2MK0d8 it wasn't even high tide. |

Re: Severe storm on the way
You could describe the winds in Manchester as a tad blustery.
I was knocked over on to my derrière as I came around the side of my house this morning. :( |

Re: Severe storm on the way
wow it got a bit windy empty bins toppled over but thats about all I noticed I just thought was a windy night but I am in east midlands we tend to not get the worst of weather here as too far from all coasts.
But in 1987 I was on a old creaking ship going from guernsey back to england right in the middle of the storm now that was a different story. |
