Office 2007 on Windows 2000

Hello,

Anybody tried running Office 2007 on Windows 2000?

I know it's not supported by Microsoft but has anybody tried it?

Would more than likely kill the 2000 machine.

In what way? I know it's resource intensive, but what if the Windows 2000 PC had a good CPU and RAM spec?

Re: Office 2007 on Windows 2000

Well.. from using it on XP it just causes a consant lock up - and my machine isnt exactly poor - Quad Core CPU etc.

Personally Id stick with Outlook 2003 - its probably better than 2007 anywho!

Runs fine on XP here and it's a medium spec PC, and I don't really want to get into a discussion regarding what version is better as that was'nt my question - but anyway - back to the question...

So in answer to the question, yes Ive tried it on 2000 and it killed it - was a p4 - 1gb ram - just killed the machine!

OK - please define "killed" - it's not really a technical term!

Do you mean it just grabbed all the resources it could and ran very slowly...or it didn't run at all? Did you do any investigation as to what processes were being maxed out at the time?

Sorry - but I'm looking for a bit more of a technical explanation.

Re: Office 2007 on Windows 2000

Hmm

Anywho as you wish.

Outlook caused 80 % CPU usage. It caused constant lock up and freeze - it caused general slowness. So I removed it and the machine went back to normal, running relativly well and just ticked over.

Does this help?

Why don't you install microsoft virtual machine 2007 - install win2k and try it for your yourself, you can get a better understanding of what's going on then :tu:

Beacuse I thought I'd ask here first to try and get a heads up of what happens when you run the suite. :tu:

Sort of...looks like I will be testing it myself to see what processes were hit....

I seem to remember when I tried the install on the one remaining Win2K PC here that the Office 2007 install actually told me it wouldn't install it because it couldn't be installed on Windows 2000.

Re: Office 2007 on Windows 2000

I am very interested in this as well. The exact error message is "The specified program requires a newer version of Windows."
I am running Windows 7 and Windows 2000/xp/2008 R2 and linux in Vmware.
I wanted a quick OS Windows based that did not require a lot of disk space.
The boot CD for W2k SP4 comes in at 374 mb and on my Core 2 Duo processor Windows 2000 SP4 flies!
The environment variable for both XP and Windows 2000 are the same "Windows_NT" so that is not the problem.
I will figure this out and report back when I get it working.

It's not the environment variable that gets checked. The setup will use the version number (which is 5 for Windows 2000 and 5.1 for XP) and build number (which would give a good idea if any service packs were installed).

Ok! Now we are getting somewhere. Thanks for the helpful nudge in the right direction!
