Re: free web space from virgin media
Hi all,
im new to cable forums & new to building websites but i am going to launch a gamming clan soon, i have built most of my clan site but im stuck on a few things. 1. I want/need the info/code to build a forum on my site. (i dont want to use a forum site, i want my very own forum on my site) 2. I want/need a comment box on my site that only allows registered members to use it & i want it to display the last 5 or 6 comments posted on it & i want it to make all the posted comments read only to the next users so no one can edit what some one else has posted. 3. i want/need a secure login & register. If any one can advise me or give me the codes/code generators required for these items please do so. |
Re: free web space from virgin media
It's not free, but this forum uses http://www.vbulletin.com/
Have a look at http://www.phpbb.com/ for a free forum solution though. As long as you have some webspace that allows you to use your own PHP scripts, then you can use either of the above. Also, check what your webhost provides. Some have forum software available as part of their packages. Note: Virgin, AFAIK, don't support any scripts on your webspace, and don't provide forum software. |

Thanks for the reply & advice but its not what im after. I have made my site using html pages & now im trying to find out how to create a forum in my site from scrach using html codes. I really need to know how to make a box like this one that people can type in to & submit then have it add its self to the page as a text read me. Its been doing my head in trying to get this done & its the only thing holding me back, please reply if you can help |
Re: free web space from virgin media
You can't do that kind of advanced thing with HTML, you need PHP and CGI, preferably MySQL.

Re: free web space from virgin media
Ok chickendippers, can i add php to my site & launch it on virgin media webspace?
Or do i need to start my site again as php & not html? What is MySQL ? i thought it was a web host. Thanks for the reply. |
Re: free web space from virgin media
As far as I know, Virgin Media webspace will only work with stuff like HTML, no scripting or database functions are supported - sorry ..
|
Re: free web space from virgin media
You can't run PHP script from your VM web space.
MySQL is a database system for use with scripting languages like PHP. All forums need a database system to be able to hold any information. |
Re: free web space from virgin media
Ok homealone & AntiSilence, thaks for the replys
What do you surgest i do? I need a clan website for clanbase to accept my clan. If i join mysql will i be able to add php etc to my html site there or do i need to scrap my html alltogether? |
Re: free web space from virgin media

It isn't that expensive to do this, as little as £15 a year can be possible... btw, you don't 'join' mysql, it is a application for managing databases - the hosting packages I mentioned usually include access to mysql as part of the deal :) |
Re: free web space from virgin media
it sounds like your very new to all this and so your going to have to do a LOT of reading and learning.
for you, your best bet is to install an all in package on your local lan machines and play with it there, then transfer to a payed for co-location server later once you know enough and want more speed for your users. Apache2Triad, that can be found and simply installed on any of your VM cable LAN machines as a self contained unit on a windows OS, and has all that you might need ,except OC in your case a ready made forum, but you want to learn how to make that from scratch yourself you say.... http://apache2triad.net/ do a search on here for webserver and you might find some more information as regards rebol and other scripting languages and help, theres quite a bit.... |
Re: free web space from virgin media
ok & thank you homealone & popper
i am very new to this lol only 3 weeks ago i started, got dream weaver & took it from there. i will follow your advice but its all most a mistery to me lol, i got the time & im willing to learn so please push me in the right direction. "install an all in package on your local lan machines" does this meen to install on my pc & what all in package should i go for? |
Re: free web space from virgin media
well theres your problem, to learn this stuff properly, a good html book and an editor is what you need, DW is fine after you know the ins and outs ,but a good basic book/PDF is your best option long term.
everyone needs to start somewere so good luck in your trials and errors, and there will be lots. ;) the all in one is that http://apache2triad.net/ its got everything you need, web server PHP SQL and the rest in one simple install package. its put together so you install on your C: drive and from then on your machine starts all these packages up and you have in effect a full set of servers running right there on your PC under your desk to mess around with. just make sure you have enough HD space... read the http://apache2triad.net/ site help files etc, it will become clear. |
Re: free web space from virgin media
popper, i cant fault you
gotta reboot now for the install, will be back in a bit. thanks for the advice |
Re: free web space from virgin media
can somone help
i been on this site all morning, http://apache2triad.net/ ive created 2 accounts & they just wont send me the activation email so i cant login or anything can some one tell me where to get a simular package to this on a site that works please? |
Re: free web space from virgin media
XAMPP Lite is what I use for local development.
For forums I'd recommend SMF. For the website itself I'd forget about coding your own in dreamweaver, use a content management system instead. If you're already using SMF an easy way to achieve this would be using TinyPortal. |
Re: free web space from virgin media
Thank You, Nemeth
Im still unsure which software to go with, but i have plenty to get on with & loads of reading to do. Thanks to everyone who has replyed to my posts. |
Re: free web space from virgin media
Sorry for taking this back to 2008 :dozey: What is the situation about hosting your own website with a phpbb forum via your own server from home? as vm wont allow php on there webspace.
Cheers  |
