BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Does anyone out there feel they can offer me some expert help to resolve
a networking issue that has baffled a total of 12 Tech Support (including two Level 2 technicians). My new Belkin USB adapter cannot get me online wirelessly on my Dell laptop, and yet in the task bar it tells me I am connected. Just getting 'Cannot display webpage' Previous adapter only worked intermittently around the house, never got a stable connectiion. Setup is as follows: Wired Dell Desktop PC (Vista) and Wired Dell Desktop PC (XP) both connected via the Belkin Router 802.11g, and the Dell Laptop wireless via the Belkin USB adapter 802.11g (54 Mbps) Have spoken to Belkin Tech Support 12 to 14 times now and each different person has gone over steps already tried from the previous calls, even though they have all of this information in front of them, and still I have not got this issue resolved. If anyone considers themselves brave enough to take on this challenge then please step forward......I await your replies. Andy ---------- Post added at 17:35 ---------- Previous post was at 17:27 ---------- Got a bit more info, which should shed some light on the problem I hope! The laptop gives me an IPconfig of 169.254.197.11 I have also done ping tests from the laptoop with the following results: Ping to my 2 desktop PCs - Destination Host unreachable Ping to Default Gateway 192.168.2.1 - Destination Host unreachable Ping to 169.254.197.11 (my laptop) - Sent (4) Received (4) Lost (0) Ping to 'Host Name' of laptop - Sent (4) Received (4) Lost (0). Have tried to do 'nslookup', which incidentally, I had not been asked to do before, and has now given an interesting result: Default Servers are unavailable Default Server: Unknown Address: 127.0.0.1 Hope the above helps. I so need to get this fixed, or else I will have to cut my losses, and buy some new kit which WILL work. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
:welcome: Andy :)
okay the dell laptop how old is it and also which belkin USB adapter have you got in there? the rest of the pc's that are connected to the belkin router do they work alright? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Make sure you have the latest drivers installed from the belkin website.
From a dos prompt, do an ipconfig /release all and then ipconfig /renew all (also make sure the wireless router is working fine) The 169.... ip address is abviously the local ip address and will not work, make sure your local laptop firewall is switched off as well. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Hi DocDutch and Londoner 1,
Thanks 4 your replies.......only sorry I was not logged in at the time, but I am now, and here is the info you needed. IPCONFIG/RELEASE ALL is giving the following message: The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation IPCONFIG/RENEW ALL The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation As far as the router goes, I have a good internet connection on the 2 wired desktop PCs Back to you guys. Andy ---------- Post added at 19:38 ---------- Previous post was at 19:35 ---------- Forgot to mention....Windows Firewall is set to OFF, and the Kaspersky Internet Security has since lapsed out of date (Got a new licence but need connection to sort it out). Andy ---------- Post added at 19:42 ---------- Previous post was at 19:38 ---------- Bit more info again, I'll get the hang of this messaging soon I hope, anyway its the Belkin USB adapter 802.11g (54 Mbps) and the Dell Latitude C400 was bought secondhand about 3 years ago. so much for the techs you spoke to then.... the 169.254.197.11 isnt in the same range as the routers 192.168.2.1 range so make the usb adaptor manually in the same range. to be simplistic, you need IPs in the same range so as to allow your IP packets to flow from one machine to the other and back. a valid IP range in combination with the right 'subnet mask' 255.255.255.0 in your case tells the network stack these packets can flow. use 192.168.2.2 as the USB ethernets IP and try pinging the router again, you should be able to browse too providing the routers got a valid webside WAN IP set ,i assume the wired pcs work ,so try it. sure the router should be giving out an IP inthe right 192.168.2.* range but you might not have that set in the router so keep it simple and manually set a valid IP for the USb pc. the usual reason to get the 169.* range is usually windows messing up ,169.* being what windows uses when it cant auto find a DHCP server to get a valid LAN IP, it messes up a lot so if you ever see this range, manually change it to something valid. im guessing the USB ethernet has a MAC of 00.00.00.00 ,change that for another valid MAC and you might find windows then manages to ask the routers DHCP server for a valid IP ,but just set the IP manually for a quick test for now. if you stil cant browse after manually setting the IP in the USB sticks network config, then use one of your wired pcs to go into the routers mini web server pages and check to see if you can see the new USBs IP in there so as to confirm its really wirelessly connected. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Hi Popper, and thanks for your input. I had the Belkin techs assigning the IP manually
before many times, and changing the DNS server to 4.4.2.2 and 4.4.4.1 respectively in the appropriate boxes, and nothing improved the situation. It seems I have been pushed from pillar to post with the Belkin techs, who have tried letting Windows configure and also letting Belkin software configure, and that too has drawn a blank. Router has been reset many times, and Belkin software has been uninstalled and reinstalled. There must surely be something else untried, but what? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
you on exC&W/NTL cable?
use 194.168.4.100 for primary DNS and 194.168.8.100 for secondary DNS. these are the official DNS your router should be getting given from VM, so you can also use them in the manual DNS section of windows networking too. from what you say here ,id not be trusting anything these so called techs are telling you, were did they get this 'DNS server to 4.4.2.2 and 4.4.4.1 respectively ' from, its NOTHING like anything Virgin Media use and so only valid IP pinging would work as you cant resolve any URL to the right IP without a working DNS or failing that, the currect entrys in your OS configs . for instance if your DNS are set wrong the command ping www.ntlworld.com would not work, but ping 212.250.162.12 would work if your IP and routing were set right. so you are saying you have followed my advice above and set the USB ethernet to 192.168.2.2, the routers IP is 192.168.2.1 ,and your 'subnet mask' is set for 255.255.255.0 [edit] if for any reason the manual 192.168.2.2 didnt work and some machine reported an error of some kind ,change the 192.168.2.2 to another No at the end that doesnt clash withthe other PCs on the LAN, try 192.168.2.22 as the router might be giving out the *.2 already and so clash and thats not good. you have checked the routers web pages from a working wired PC on the LAN for the 192.168.2.2 and its showing up on the page so the USB pc IS connected to the router?. you still cant ping and web browse ? forget all this windows configure and reinstalling belkin software other than the devices wireless driver, its just complicating the matter, all we need to know after you manually set the right IP on the USB wireless ethernet, is can the router see the 192.168.2.2 as connected, and can you ping/browse the above URL/IP after making the changes to the wireless USB PC now? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Thanx Popper for all that. Please can you stand by for a bit longer whilst I try and sort it out right now, and I will get back to you soon as tonight. May even need a bit of help too to do the changes you've mentioned. Speak in a bit.

Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
sure, im refreshing the thread now and again so if im around ill reply, or one of the other readers will help you out if they can be bothered to make the time.
you understand basicly how a (wireless)router works ?. its something like this theres two main parts, the WAN AND THE LAN. the (Wireless)router is the primary device , its WAN side plugs into the VM-CM LAN rj45 port and gets given a valid webside IP,VM route, 'subnet mask' and DNS. thats it for the WAN side, its now upto the router to pass all your data/packets to and from that LAN side connected PCs to the WAN side. the routers LAN side then gives out valid IP ranges (usually) to the wired and wirless PCs, passes on the set DNS,route. all the LAN side PCs weather wired or wireless are talking to the router nothing else, so your problem is on the routerLAN side and thats were we need to look to get the correct settings in place so the wireless PC can talk. i assume the wired PCs are working fine and you can browse to the routers web pages, you didnt answer that simple question so we are just guessing right now until you answer. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Back again,
I don't like the sound of this one.......I think I've done the changes ok, but when I tried to ping 192.168.2.2 or any other for that matter, I get Destination Host unreachable and if I do IPCONFIG on the laptop I'm getting message: Media Disconnected! Any ideas? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
"Media Disconnected"
your not wirelessly connected to the wireless router, do a search for your router using eather the windows right click network icon near the time/date or use the belkin app that came on the CD and you installed. we dont know if your set for windows wireless or the belkin wireless app, but eather one should find the wireless router and i assume you are set for the belkin wireless app operation so overriding the windows default seeing as you already mentioned re-installing that. you just need to find the search for wireless AP type option inthe belkin app and you can then select your router to connect to it. the manual setting will override the DHCP client so not a problem right now, you just need to be sure your connected to the wireless router. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Managed to find my wireless connection in the Wireless Network Connection dialog box so I highlighted it and clicked Connect, and even though the strength showing on the little monitor icon in taskbar was saying 'Excellent', I still can't get an Internet page up. Aaargh!!
|
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
your getting to far in front, you did the right ip , the ping and the checked the routers web wireless connected devices page from a wired PC?.
can you at least ping the router from the wireless USB pc now?. ping 192.168.2.1 we assume from what little feedback you have told us so far. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Did the ping test to 192.168.2.1 and got Request timed out

Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
okay what have you set the IP to?
also go to Dos and type in NET START WZCSVC this will kick start the windows wireless client. then we go to network connections, right click the wlan connection and see if you can find the network. Did you get any names from the 2nd line peeps at belkin (I used to work there as techie so would be able to tell if its a 1st liner or higher thats been helping you) |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
right , eather the 192.168.2.1 isnt your routers right IP , or theres another setting set wrong somewere.
what about those router pages from a wired pc, give us all the info asked for so we can help you solve this far quicker. does the router see the connected USB pc now and what IP does it think its using 192.168.2.2 ?, is the routers ip really 192.168.2.1 and if not what are these?. im off soon as im busy but ill try and keep an eye on whats happening with the info you supply etc. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Well would you have believed it! Did an IPCONFIG on the laptop, and got the reply back of an IP address of 192.168.2.2 which is the same as one of my desktop 'wired' PCs.
IP Address: 192.168.2.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway - This is BLANK Helpful? |

Andy, alright its been setup incorrectly.

okay with the ip set to 192.168.2.55 can you ping the router on 192.168.2.1 and or can you ping 66.102.9.99??

and try pinging 192.168.2.55 from those *.3 and *.2 pcs as well, can they ping ok ?
check the USB pcs windows firewall is off. is the belkins default ip 192.168.2.1 Doc, so we are reasonably sure if andy doesnt tell us for sure the router is set to that Ip, it probably is right. ohh, i asume the belkin has a ping page in there somwere doc?,if so, remember to also ping the pcs and the url ping www.ntlworld.com from that router page too to give full info.... BTW i told you on the edit above to change the IP from *.2 to *.22 if you already have that IP assigned, but doc likes 5s so thats ok too ;) ping 66.102.9.99?? is that some sort of internal default belkin firmware IP Doc? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Managed to see a listing of Windows services that are started.
also in Network connections the Wireless connection icon is there next to the LAN one and there is NO red x on it. Still not getting internet, even though the message at bottom of screen says 'Wireless Network Connection 17 is now connected' |

im just looking for confirmation that the routers current IP is infact 192.168.2.1 and seeing if you can get some form of pinging at least one way, so confirming there is at least some part of the LAN to and/or from the USB wireless PC working . as Doc says it looks like a full reinstall is in order, as it appears the USB is connecting to the router so its working to some degree and so im inclined to think its OK on the hardware side. the fact your on 'Connection 17' means you have been trying a long time to fix this so we will try to guide you. id be inclined to also remove all the ethernet devices inside device manager and start afresh, as starting from no TCP:ip devices installed means we are clearing the old windows code/apps and re-installing these too, alongside your belkin drivers. im off as well though right now as i need to get stuff done and cover some other bits etc. just give Doc that belkin USB version number as its very important to be sure were to go, if thats not given he cant tell if theres a known problem with it. |

Hi Doc,
I just got to your new message, and thanks 4 that. I can confirm that the version of the USB stick reads v4002uk and not v4000uk as in your last msg. Can you step by step me to uninstall the driver so I don't mess up. Andy |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
morning chaps.... ;)
before you install the driver again, unplug the USB,go into the device drivers networking too and remove all ethernet devices. the best way to do this is to remove all devices including the old hidden ones like this: we are talking xp sp2 on the lappy right?. click start, right click 'my computer/manage, left click 'device manager', in 'computer management' click view,'show hidden devices' then you should see all the old network devices ,remove every single one of them and that will get you back to generic. im assuming theres no built in wired ethernet, and so you can now plug in the USB wireless card, OR reset and let the windows auto-install any removed ethernet if there is infact one inside the lappy. doing that replaces any old TCP/IP code and apps and reinstalls it, but that only really happens when you remove all the ethernet, even the odd firewire networking devices your machine might have there. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Hi Popper,
I am in Computer Management - Device Manager, I clicked View and selected Show Hidden Devices, and now I have a list of stuff showing for my lappie. Now I'm really stuck as to what to select next. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
remove EVERYTHING in 'network adaptors'
did you say it has a wired ethernet, i forget?, if so after you have removed it all one at a time without rebooting, then its better to have windows reinstall the wired ethernet first before you re-plug the USB wireless card back in and reinstall that driver too. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
In Network Adapters, the first one listed is as follows:
3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible) and under that is: 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible) Packet Scheduler Miniport. Does that mean it has wired ethernet then? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
yep, just reset or use the right click 'scan for hardware changes' BEFORE WE move onto pluging the USB back in.
windows will find all the currently attached devices you have removed from the list and re-install them plus all the TCP:ip networking stuff. ---------- Post added at 12:01 ---------- Previous post was at 12:00 ---------- Doc can use that wired 3Com 3C920 Ethernet if it comes down to wireing up that port to the router, and do the remote install if needs be, but it will work this time, so no need ;) |

ok thanks doing it now
---------- Post added at 12:10 ---------- Previous post was at 12:02 ---------- Have uninstalled the 3Com ones listed, but when I went to do the next one listed - Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter, I am getting a dialog box called Device Manager: Failed to uninstall the device - The device may be required to boot up the computer????? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
if its the only way then fine ,reset but its a pain as the OS will try and re-install the removed devices BEFORE your ready and all cleared out.
just reset and cancel any installing popups until your ready to really install all the removed devices. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Popper, I have rebooted once now after uninstalling the 3 com 3C920 Ethernet controller
and went to do the next on the list, and as you said, it has been reinstalled....don't know what to do next. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
remove everything else and leave that until last, hopefully it wont ask you to reboot before then and its fine.
the object is to just clear out the drivers, so if needs be, you can go inside the BIOS and temp turn off the 3com there,so the OS cant see it and so not try and reinstall it, BUT we are getting into other techy stuff and i dont want to go down that road just yet. |

hmm that Cisco Systems 350 Series Wireless LAN Adapter - Packet Scheduler Miniport

Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
yep except thats not the BIOS, you need to find that key ,usually at its powering up pressing delete, F1 or F2 works.
the Bios is were you get to change all the PCs internal bits before any OS gets anywere near it, it can be dangerous if you tweek the wrong bits but devices such as turning off/on the 3com, the serial ports and the parallel ports if your not using them are perfectly fine. im at a loss IF YOU HAVE REMOVED/UNPLUGED/DETACHED/DISCONNECTED THE belkin USB but you didnt tell us so just guessing. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Belkin and Direct Parallel cannot be uninstalled.
I looked in PCMCIA adapters and found this: Texas Instruments PCI-1410 CardBus Controller. Is this anything you need to know about? |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
nope
|
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
The Belkin USB adapter is not attached to the laptop.
|
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
if your up for it you can find the BIOS key and go hunting for the 3com and temp disable it.
also the parallel device and serial if you like ,then you should be able to remove the 3com and parallel, its the belkin that really matters but it looks like we are going to be rebooting to normal mode after that. letting windows find and install all the missing/removed drivers, and your GOING TO TELL US if that 'Cisco Systems 350 Series Wireless LAN Adapter and its matching minport come back. THEN im off for a bit and Doc can take over for the belkin bit. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Andy normally on Dell laptops to get into bios its either the "Delete Key" or the "F2" key.
with regards to the Cisco systems wlan adapter I would be curious if thats internal to the laptop or not. also you cant uninstall any of the other lan adapters in device manager as thats normally the case, just right click them and select uninstall. I have a funny feeling that its the OS on the laptop thats not playing ball instead of the adapter. |

look for 'ethernet' or 'network' probably.
and dont forget to save the config usually F10 in the Bios to make the setting stick. was it the delete or F2 key BTW, not that it matters. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
F2 key.
Had a look for Ethernet or Network, and the word Ethernet appears once only, on page 3 of 7 in the Dock Configuration. Its called Docking Ethernet, whatever that means. Nothing with the word Network though. |

that would in effect make more devices available and we dont want that right now, but not to worry, if you are, undock it. turn off that Docking Ethernet option, boot to safe mode again, remove the device and see if it trys to re-install. we might as well move on now as we are getting nowere really, if as Doc said you cant right click and un-install any remaining device drivers in the ethernet bit, just boot and we shall see were we are after windows has reinstalled etc. im also wondering if the OS is buggered like Doc said, you do have a working windows cd to clean format and reinstall i assume?. but lets move along for now.... |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Andy it might be an easier option to wipe the OS clean...as your quite limited in what you can do. from clean it will work alright :) you just have to probably make a backup of anything you got on the lappy that you want to keep.

Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
I understand. First though let me just say I really do appreciate what you guys are trying to do for me here. It really should not have got to this stage, when you remember
that up until the previous Belkin adapter was working reasonably well (until the adapter got knocked a few times and then broke away), so I never envisaged that when I bought a replacement online, that it would give me this sort of grief.....anyway I guess that's history now, so I shall proceed on regardless! I shall crack on now with Disabling the Docking Ethernet. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Andy if you cant disable the ethernet ports or anything then really the only way to go would be in my opinion a wipe of the OS as you should be able to uninstall anything from device manager.

Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Forgot to say. I never got any discs with this laptop. It came with leads, external CD drive, in a nice leather case, £350 about 4 years ago.

Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
on the bottom does it have an XP home or PRO key or even Windows 2000?
|
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
failing that, your going to need to use an app to find your valid OS key and write it down, 'XP-Key-Reader.exe' works as good as any, then go find someone with the same version OS cd as already installed.
thats assuming theres no hidden partition on the drive thats got a recovery image you can use, but its always good to write your origial OS key down somewere safe so you can avoid these re-install OS problems... |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
windows XP Home Edition (Pro). Just had a Blue screen IRQ dilema, but laptop has just come back on.
---------- Post added at 16:43 ---------- Previous post was at 16:33 ---------- No recovery image on HD since I got it. Drive is only small 20Gb anyway. Going to hunt around for this XP Key reader 'exe' . Should I find a free download of it somewhere. |

http://www.drowaelder.de/winpe/keyfi...yfinder-pe.cab
should work fine, its part of the PE Builder Plug-ins collection for UBCD4win. UBCD4win being another option if you were more techy, would be to use that to rebuild your hidden i386 dir somewere and re-make your own windows CD(the windows install after its copyed from the OS cd.....) but thats way more time than we have to walk readers through. http://www.drowaelder.de/winpe/PEIndex.htm http://www.ubcd4win.com/index.htm |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Andy the key is for XP home or XP Pro? there is a big difference ;)
you have 2 other pcs around 1 with Vista the other XP, if that is XP home as well then you can just use the cd that came with that pc ;) I've done that quite a few times now and always worked for me :D |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Doc, Yes I do have that disc for the XP PC, so that will be alright then.
Popper, I'm gonna take a look at the link you posted, and then get back to you guys after that. ---------- Post added at 17:28 ---------- Previous post was at 17:19 ---------- Went to get the disc from location where I keep all the docs/discs etc associated with my PCs, but OS disc not there. Can only find the Applications disc and the Drivers & Utilities disc. Hoping that I may have put it with other programs somewhere else. Will take a look and report back. |
Re: BELKIN Router/Adapter Problem.....HELP PLEASE!!!!!

|
