Rememberance Bank Holiday

Number 10 Downing Street has approved a petition requesting a new public holiday in the united Kingdom, falling on the Monday after Remembrance Sunday in November each year. To be known as the National Remembrance Holiday, it has three aims:

1. To emphasise the remembrance of those servicemen and women who have given, and continue to give, their lives for Great Britain

2. To remind people of the importance of protecting our Nation and what it stands for;

3. To break that 3 month period between the August Public Holiday and Christmas when there are currently no long weekends, especially as the UK has fewer public holidays than most European Countries.

If you agree with the idea, you may sign up to the petition. This is not just about another bank holiday, but more importantly about having a designated day to remember all those people that sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Points one and two I support. However putting in a bank holiday because there's not many long weekends around that time of the year isnt a very good reason IMO.

Also I think rememberance day should have more of an emphasis on people that have died fighting for their country since WWII. Not to detract from the barvery of our men and women that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country during WWII, it just seems like the people that have died after seem to get forgotton.

Although I agree that it's a good sentiment, I don't see how making it a bank holiday will make the subject of Rememberance any more significant.

It won't..it's the only sop that this government can offer for the poor attitude towards the services since they came to power. They have underfunded/under resourced them going into war zones, they have cut back on the services provided to service men and women and over utilised them in sorting out a variety of jobs for NATO and the UN.Our armed services are over stretched and finding it hard to cope with all that they have been asked to do in recent years. It's going to take more than offering to name a bank holiday they were going to give us anyway.

Indeed, if anything it will improve pub and club takings on the Sunday before, making many who actually served in at least one of those two wars wonder if it was actually worth it.

Bank Holidays aren't automatically an extra day off. In additon some workplaces count them in your holiday entitlement.

Re: Rememberance Bank Holiday

I personally wish rememberence Sunday not only remembered the dead but also the futility of war. Especially now seeing as men are still dying for political reasons around the world when those who send them to their deaths are sat comfortablly in Downing street or The White House.

To quote a favourite song of mine

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of deaths construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds, oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has sturck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
All right now!

I want a day off because it's a day off not to remember anyone. After all how many other bank holidays bar the obvious Christian ones are to remember anyone? Why the hell they can't just call it a harvest festival bank holiday beats me.Or have it named after a British hero like Churchill or Nelson or Wellington.

Anyway most Bank holidays get worked into school holidays by the PTB.They are not extra days of for everyone AS has been pointed out.

In all honestly I agree with the statement about sentiments being in the right place, though I can see it as just another excuse for people to get absolutely smashed and have a lie in.

I'd much rather see a bank holiday for St Georges day for that kind of behaviour.

Russ 03-02-2008 16:52

Re: Rememberance Bank Holiday

The trouble with a bank holiday for St George is that it wouldn't benefit everyone.

Better to keep the number of bank holidays as they are now.

I'm a ex-serviceman, I also know a few lads who have been killed in Iraqistan & I stand behind each & every one of them 100%.Our squaddies are doing what British servicemen have been doing for year, doing the best with what they have got professionally & honourably. That cannot be said for out politicians.
I for one would welcome a Remeberance day holiday, not only to allow us to remember our fallen but also to allow us to recover from remembering our fallen!!!

But aren't we already honouring our fallen? How will an extra day off work for some honour them any more?

The are a lot of re-unions that take place where people have to travel to get there & as well as that a lot of companies do not recognise the sacrifice our lads have made.It wont make the public honour the fallen any more but it may make them take notice.

See I disagree with the last line. The excellent service that gets broadcast each november always brings it home to me, the processions through our town to the local war memorial monument, the poppies on sale, I think it would be difficult for anyone to miss the significance.

Well I think that if Spike thinks it is a good idea and he is taking as someone that has been there and done that then it is good enough for me :tu:
