Storms battering parts of Britain

Quote:

High winds have been battering large parts of Britain, claiming at least one life, as forecasters warn of blizzards and snow showers to come.

A lorry driver died on the M6 in Cumbria in one of a spate of accidents after gusts reached up to 70mph.

A long stretch of the motorway was shut as lorries were swept over in the wind.

The Forth Road Bridge, west of Edinburgh, was closed to northbound traffic after a lorry overturned in the stormy conditions.

Blackpool used to have a notorious corner where the wind used to literally blow people into the road and on to the promenade !!!

I hope it's cleared up by next Friday as I'm heading up to Norfolk!

did you go out in the winds last year (same time roughly as now). considering they were swirling winds, walking in it made you look rather silly, one second you'd be fighting a head wind trying to move, the next you'd be trying to stop yourself fall flat on your face :p:

Went down to Cheltenham very early doors this morning and it was pretty horrendous: gales, sleet, spray, standing water and idiots in 4x4s still doing a ton in the fast lane. Set out at about 11 to come back home and it was pretty pleasant all the way home although a tad windy.

Indeed. Whilst out at work last night I caught the midnight shipping forecast on R4 forecasting gale force 10>violent storm force 11 from St Davids head to the north channel, winds SW > NW

This was what had obviously blown inland by this morning.

As fate would have it, today is the 55th anniversary of the sinking of the Princess Victoria in the Irish Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Princess_Victoria), which Mother Nature is celebrating in her own way:

Quote:

Passengers and crew are being airlifted from a ferry in the Irish Sea after it was hit by a freak wave in bad weather.

Four passengers and 19 crew are being removed after Liverpool coastguard received a Mayday call from the ship at 1943 GMT as it battled 7m waves.

The Riverdance, which sails from Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland to Heysham in Lancashire, is listing to 60 degrees after its cargo shifted.

The Irish Sea is a *horrible* bit of water, and always has been.

This just about covers how windy it is in the north west atm - I'm also in a 14 storey towerblock, which feels like its rocking

thank heavens this incident doesn't seem to be as bad as the one 55 years ago

I still wouldn't like to have been on that ship, today - 'hats off' to the rescue services, though ...

Do they not,as responsible mariners, check the shipping forecast? This is madness. I check it and I do'nt even captain a passenger carrying ferry !

Er, yes, it was a freak wave. Plenty of other ships out there, if you check the online shipping website for the area (linked off the BBC). If you want to run a risk free ship, don't leave port.

We have had high winds driving rain, sleet, hail, snow here in the Nottingham\Mansfield area. I straddled the centre markings on the A614 on the way home due to high winds blowing me car into the on coming lane.
