Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

Does anybody know how to do it?

I cant do it! :(

kryogenik 28-12-2007 22:02

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

It's do-able. I've been typing on this one for days.
I choose the wireless network from the wifi settings, enter the passkey, connect and that's it. I use the terminal services client and remote desktop into my main machine. I don't need to, I have a laptop, but this PDA is new (to me) and I'm a geek.
:)

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

mine doesnt even have a list of networks to choose from, but it has got the wireless networking in the phone!

---------- Post added at 22:09 ---------- Previous post was at 22:04 ----------

can it connect to access points?

kryogenik 28-12-2007 22:12

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

Yes. I'm connected to my wireless router.
I can use the unit's browser or use the main machine's browser by remote.
What PDA is it?
Sure you've enabled your WLAN?

Callumpy 28-12-2007 22:20

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

i have enabled the wlan on my phone, i cant find a network in rage though!
my PC is using wireless now, so there definatly is one!

kryogenik 28-12-2007 22:26

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

Should be able to see it then. This PDA (SPV M5000/XDA EXEC) can currently see 7 wireless points while my laptop sees only 2 or 3.
Have you tried a Google search for "connect [whatever PDA you have] to wireless network" ?
Often you'll find forums dedicated to your kind of PDA.

I'm not sure Microsoft will be able to help you to be truthful!!
A forum dedicated to mobile units will be better. Try www.modaco.com

You still haven't said what ppc / phone you are using. That might help a bit, also there are a couple of progs that will connect you to any open / unsecured networks in range.

I'll look for them now, so what are you using :D

model: Q9

at first i thought it was a copy of the motorola Q9, it isnt though.
I also dont have a instruction book and i bought it off eBay from a seller in Hong Kong

I really like the phone and the stuff on it, but connecting to the internet is the main reason for having the phone!

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

Well! Some cosmetics and key positions aside, it certainly 'looks' like a Q9 or at least some weird derivative!
What does settings/system/device information/identity report as it's model number?
In any case, looking at the ebay auction photos it's running WM5 same as mine, so can you tell us your procedure in steps for trying to connect to a wireless network and we'll go from there.

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

Looks loke some nasty WM clone!

Anyway - try this: http://kb.iu.edu/data/atcn.html#initial

Is your router set for DHCP and is the Wi-Fi visible to all devices?

GeoffW 30-12-2007 09:46

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

On mine, I go into comms manager by highlighting and selecting Vodafone on the home screen. Then settings, WLAN settings (make sure WiFi is on), then choose the first option to view wifi networks, select your SSID had fill out the settings in the wizard.

You get a solid beacon when its connected or a dotted one if its probing.

Unless his is on Vodafone, he won't have that short cut as it's a Vodafone customisation.

All he needs to go is go on the Wi-Fi setting and activate the WLAN / Wi-Fi and then it should pick up the access point....

It's a fairly simple process... :)

LOL, now there's a thought, still, another way to go is a prog like this, hitch-hiker it's a beta freeware, you'll need to install .net cf2 as well. Never used this but does the same as my pay for prog. All you do is install, run the prog and it will attempt to connect to any unprotected / available wi-fi spot.

Hey Callumpy - did you get a Nintendo Wii remote for Christmas as well?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-aTfLayXwQ

LOL!

PS - Is the "phone" really running WM5?

Edit - just checked eBay page - ok - looks real enough - so what options do you have under Start / Settings?

Edit 2 - Here's the official Microsoft manual - may not be exact but should be a start: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...nnections.mspx

Change your view to fit screen or similar or what ever suits you best, there are a lot of options, of course I'm talking from an XDA and similar's point of view, I would imagine you have something similar. So, you have it installed, is your wi-fi on ? If so, what happens now when you start HH ?

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

You know, on that Ebay page, Wifi isn't mentioned as a feature, and the Wireless Manager screen shot shows wifi as off.
My PDA doesn't have wifi, so if I want to use it for wireless internet, I have to connect to my PC via bluetooth and do it that way.
I do have a wifi CF card, just don't have Windows Mobile 5 drivers for it.

Callumpy 30-12-2007 13:41

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

Anyway, i pressed the select button and a window popped up saying no WLAN was found, so turn it on or press cancel to quit

Looks like there is no WLAN card in the phone?

OK, you still haven't answered the question, start>settings>connections. Do you have a wlan icon or similar. At least that way we can rule out what you have or have not got, and what you can do.

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sear...e=wifi+sd+card

Whole load listed.
I might just get a new SD one as they look like they're only around £20 posted and I'm not using my SD slot (the beauty of having a PDA with both SD and CF slots rather than smart phone with only SD).
Remember if you currently have a SD card with programs installed, you won't be able to access them when using the WIFI SD card.

Hmm, for £25 you can get 54Mbps ones, tempting.

Right, bought one, don't tell Faulty or she'll kill me :D

The advert for it doesn't make the suggestion that the phone is WIFI capable, so I can't see a reason for a legitimate complaint.

Try and buy stuff in the UK mate - saves for a lot of heartache when things go wrong in my experience.
I read into using cards as WLAN when I was wanting to use my P910i (for sale by the way.. ;) ) with one - it didn't look difficult, though I never got round to buying one for it.

You may be able to, but it's not going to be much.

I've been trying to convince my friend not to buy this 2210 someone's trying to 'palm' off on him and buy something with Wi-Fi already enabled, as I know it'll be me that has to help set the damn thing up with a Wi-Fi card.

Re: Connecting A Windows Mobile 5 up to a wireless network?

Well I'm now on my ipaq via blue tooth and it was so easy!

Set a cabled activesync connection up first.
Add an incomming BT comm port on your BT enabled PC such as comm 7.
In activesync click on File - Connection Settings and tick the 3rd box down and set it to the comm port you set up in BT such as comm 7.
In BT manager on the PDA set a new activesync connection, pair the devices if prompted and you're done.

I have a bluetooth usb dongle.

Check through the software's settings/configurations for the 11 BT com ports it's set up (according to the BlueSoleil web site).
In active sync you could just set it to each com port in turn until your device is able to connect (you'll have to try and connect at each com port).

Then you should just need to configure activesync to allow connections on com7 and set up a BT activesync connection from your device.
